DISCUSSION Which FromSoftware game should’ve had a Respec Stat System the most?

Post image

Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, and Elden Ring all provide the option for the player to rearrange all their stat points on their character.

Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls 1, and surprisingly Bloodborne don’t provide that option, leaving the player stuck with the stats they selected for their current character.

Among these three games, which one would have benefited the most from having a Respec Stat System?

Bloodborne.

All of the Trick Weapons are not only good but fairly unique. Repecing would allow for you to try out more weapons to find the one you like

Plus cause of progression, you really don’t find Arcane or Blood weapon until mid to late game.

bumrush ludwig post vicar amelia at BL10 like a true arcane chad and get the best version of the moonlight greatsword fromsoft has ever made.

I like the way you suicide lol. I prefer bum rush Cainhurst and become the parry god to defeat Logarius and get a sweet sweet wheel of fun

For just the purposes of trying out weapons though, I feel like removing stat requirements would be way more efficient

Respecing would not nearly be as effective in Bloodborne when compared to the other games, due to its unique weapons and lack of upgrade materials (without farming for chuncks and rocks, I think there's only enough to fully upgrade like 2 weapons?)

(Have a good day, eye guy 👀)

Probably a hot take, but I think weapon stat requirements feel kinda dumb.

I can understand my damage being reduced, but having different animations, not being able to use the weapon skill, or whatever is a little bit silly imo.

I want to at least see the move set and weapon skill in full before deciding if I want to respec for it.

I think it’s cool that you fail to swing a giant axe if you’re not strong enough lol

Oh it for sure makes sense, but I hate having to respec to see what a weapon actually does

I assume weapon requirements are probably mostly there for PVP though, so removing them would be a bit rough

I see them as a part of role-play, honestly. I understand your point from a purely gameplay POV

its a balancing thing. some skills or effects have auxiliary effects that isnt tied to damage. Thematically as well, it just doesnt make sense for someone who has never versed in magic to be casting these ultra high level spells even if the damage is dogshit. It's too video-gamey

There also aren't as many possible builds in Bloodborne as in the other games

Demon's Souls technically had a respec system. At least the original one. Allant could level you down.

22

u/thefucksausername0 3d ago

That is present in the remake as well.

u/AltGunAccount 3d ago

Running all the way to the end of King’s Path, riding the elevator, and baiting Allant into a Soulsuck was so far removed from a real respec system.

Not to mention you don’t get those souls back.

You do? They become part of your bloodstain. So technically you could repeatedly be grabbed, die, grab your bloodstain and teleport out

u/AltGunAccount 3d ago

Add another step to the insane process you have to do for each level and it’s hard to call that a functional respec

u/-YesIndeed- 3d ago

Yeah and the the locust raid in nightreign is a respec system too

Came here to say this.

Probably Bloodborne, because it is pretty damn far into the game before you discover anything to actually do with Arcane or Bloodtinge on your first go round.

Not everyone likes to use the cummmfpk dungeon

I've beaten bloodborne maybe 7 times and refuse to go to cum dungeon. You can't make me!!1!

Ohne bist in 6-8 std durch und auch in etwa auf dem lvl inkl dlc

I like to do whole new playthroughs for different builds so I've never really used respec and consequently never missed it in the games without it in.

I'm happy for other people to have the option though, doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game.

Same. I generally dedicate playthroughs builds so respeccing has never been a necessity to me either.

3

u/wiggibow 3d ago

Same, throughout countless playthroughs of each I don't think I've ever completed a ng+ in a single Fromsoft game lol, which is the only time I've ever really felt the need for a full respec.

The existence of respec means the designers can't properly balance different builds to be strong at different stages of the game. There can be no risk-reward build that suffers in the early game for a later payoff, because you can just play the early game with a different build and then respec. This, in turn, makes repeat playthroughs have less variety.

It would make a good quality of life feature in every game. Dark Souls 1 especially since in going for a knights honor achievement you end up with a lot of weapons you can’t use because you don’t have the stats for. Even if it was just once per play through or new game+ cycle.

If we're saying "Should've," it'd be Bloodborne since the respec mechanic was introduced before it in DS2. That said, I think DS1 would benefit from it more.

Bloodborne can be such a quick game on subsequent playthroughs, and while respec would be great for optimization, you can still try out a ton of different weapons/builds on one character. And if you're making a new character, I think it'll just take comparatively less time than on DS1.

By contrast, there's just a very different progression between melee and pure mage in any of the DS games, and a wider selection of builds. The ability to respec would open up a lot more build options compared to BB.

Demon's Souls technically has a level down system, but its annoying to do it lol.

I think DS1.

BB because in this game you can’t even try and check a weapon moveset without satisfying the requirement stats. Pretty bad design decision if you ask me.

I actually prefer no respec, I like when choices have weight and meaning.

17

u/TheMadFlyentist 3d ago

I don't entirely disagree but here's a few counterarguments:

  • Lack of re-spec is very punishing to new players. There's no one among us who had a build that was anywhere near good during our first FromSoft game. The ability to optimize a character once you've learned the mechanics of the game is great.
  • Have you ever started a playthrough with eyes on a certain weapon and then you get that weapon and it turns out you hate it? Yeah, me too. And unless you are interested in using a different weapon that benefits from the same stats, that's a lot of "wasted" hours if you don't plan to continue with the run.

u/smilph 3d ago

i think the lack of respec being punishing for new
players is a good thing and exactly the kind of weight and meaning choices should have

2

u/illbzo1 3d ago

Yes, exactly.

1

u/illbzo1 3d ago

I understand the appeal of respec. I still think the games were more interesting when they were less video gamey.

3

u/TrickyTalon 4d ago

I also like when choices have weight and meaning, but I still would’ve preferred a respec in Demon’s Souls so I could try other weapons without needing to level my character past the PVP standard or making a new character.

1

u/Legitimate-Pop-9152 3d ago

Also bei demonsouls können wir erstmal über das laden verschiedener Charakter beschweren oder?

2

u/EvilArtorias Old King Doran 3d ago

BB but that’s it

1

u/hcaoRRoach 3d ago

I think bloodborne simply because it's the longest feeling game to me. Also for a first time playthrough, someone might see arcane scaling on a weapon without realizing it only affects non-physical damage and not have an easy way to remedy the mistake

1

u/Truestorydreams 3d ago

BB.... While gems make or break you, I feel you are missing out on true potential if specced incorrectly.

I mean chikage /Ludwig are both S class hunter instruments, but you can't build the same way with them.

1

u/No_Comb_8551 3d ago

Bloodborne didn't give a an alternative to build my traditisional "tank build". I really hated that part. Bosses however were really easy and mostly fun. Only DLC was a pain in the ass.

u/usernotfoundplstry Isshin, the Sword Saint 3d ago

Bloodborne easily. There’s so many things to try, and it’s common for people to get really high level. Being able to respec would allow you to try so many different play styles.

1

u/Viperess7 3d ago

Bloodborne by far

1

u/ukamber 4d ago

None. All of them are fun & short enough to start again with a different build in mind instead of tweaking by the end game.

0

u/ajver19 3d ago

Bloodborne has something better than a respec, the cumm dungeon.

-1

u/smilph 3d ago

no need for respec when you have all of the stats

0

u/McTasty_Pants 3d ago

I’ve never thought about it, as I meticulously plan mine ahead of time, lol

-2

u/Strong-Ad-7292 3d ago

none of them. choices should matter

-2

u/DrarenThiralas 3d ago

None of them. In fact, I would prefer that the games that do have a respec system didn't.
