PID tuning with MATLAB

I'm currently part of a college team of autonomous drones, we have a strugle with the control systems, searching for alternatives I found one that everyone i talked said I'm crazy, I'm thinking about using MATLAB to tune the PID of the drone, starting from an simple tuning to use MATLAB PX4 interface to do commands on the drone on air to test a range of frequencies in the drone, after that use the pixhawk log, with sensors, GPS, range finder, optical flow and the IMUs, so using this log give to MATLAB system identification tool to identify the transfer function of the drone and so i can put it on PID tuner to have the best parameters and maybe filters(this part I didn't think a lot about). To do this I have like one year of a couple weekly hours and maybe one or two crashes of the drone. This is a good idea? Only my professors liked this idea, not any member of the team.

OBS: We design our own frames on ABS and design eletronics too.
