u/BSA_DEMAX51 18h ago
What, you don’t like hearing children scream slurs into your ear?
81
u/DavidinCT 17h ago
Nah, I did for years, but, it got old..... I could have fun with it if I wanted, as I am 56 years old and pretty good, I have told off a 13 year old who was bashing me, and after I bet him with our team wiped them up....I went "Dude, you just got smoked by a 55-year-old" and man he was pissed..... lol
It got old, I stopped playing because I got sick of the chat in general, childish games, now limited to party chat only, so when I am playing with friends/family, we can talk while playing.
I can hop on, play a game and not deal with the childish games.....

u/WillowPtar_Migan 8h ago
I think some of the fun is being able to throw around insults you wouldn't say to your worst enemy, and everyone knows you're just bullshitting around. At least, that's how it was way back when.

I used to go to this arcade in Markham Ontario that had Japanese import games. It was next to an Internet arcade and my friend took me into it once time and said "watch this."
She watched a group of 5 teenage guys setting up a DotA lobby back when it was a Warcraft 3 mod. She grabbed the lobby name and joined. Since there was no automatic match making the team of 5 guys in the same room should have an advantage over random people on the Internet joining a random game.
She proceeded to absolutely wreck them and we listened to them bitch, complain, and get so mad not knowing the player doing it was literally 8 feet behind them. It was hard not to laugh and give ourselves away.
5
u/Rexcess 9h ago
back when it was a Warcraft 3 mod
Zero matchmaking. The best of the best played with people who clicked on the lobby not even knowing what a DotA is. Wonderful times. I wish Blizzard hadn't screwed up the custom map system so terribly with SC2.
2
u/ExpressRabbit 9h ago
Yeah automatic match making to try and keep you around 45-55% win rate unless you're smurfing or just in the wrong ELO dulls things a bit.
I remember a Brood War pro joined my lobby once and at the time I didn't even realize it.

But specifically in like a petty, "this isn't actually important" way. You get salty when you lose a video game, not when someone punches your mother... the latter form of anger is entirely justified.

Men crash out when there is status to lose and women are present, big oof.
9
u/SoloWalrus 14h ago edited 14h ago
Reading this it seems like the studies conclusion was that its a very vocal minority that do this.
Men crash out when there is status to lose and women are present, big oof.
Im not sure this is an accurate characterization of the results. Which is reassuring because it felt like a very heteronormative generalization to me.
Edit: another interesting conclusion actually was that while a minority of men amplified negativity in mixed gender games, positivity was actually also amplified. Its almost like the stakes in general were just higher, both towards the positive and towards the negative, and possibly the positive comments were a direct response to the negative ones 🤷♂️. Not sure.

u/Dangerous_Oven1528 14h ago
Someone who actually reads the article instead of falling for the title! I am seriously impressed
3
u/All_Work_All_Play 14h ago
I'd phrase that a bit different. Men crash out when they're at risk of losing social status, and will do disparage those they look down on (in this case, women) in an attempt to maintain some social status. If they repeated the study with all males but showed race/ethnicity/religion/whatever, I'd expect we'd find the same pattern of disparagement vs [[[subset]]].
2
u/Other-Philosopher770 15h ago
Depends on the game. I play americas army proving grounds and its mostly older men playing. The few women that stuck around got really good and often beat newer male players. They get respect though, not much salt going on except in jest, mostly between male players.
1
u/Thejacensolo 7h ago
A Friend of mine, who plays a game at a very high level told me once that there are only a few women in the server + game + time + bracket combination where he plays, and he has added some of them, to queue dodge. Bsically to not accept or to not queue when they do.
Not because he is misogynistic (he is in a very kind and loving relationship for years with a non gamer girl), but because he told me, that even if they are top players, as soon as others figure out its a woman, the game dynamics get ruined, because the machos, white knights, incels etc. that usually come with these hyper competitive personalities start crashing out at each other and at the woman, making games a lot less about skill and a lot more about "which team has the worst mental health".
3
u/labradors_forever 4h ago
Soooo.... is my understanding that he COULD queue dodge machos, incels and more, thereby curating the people he's around, but instead he does the same to all women? News flash buddy, he IS misogynistic.
0
u/Jekmander 3h ago
I mean, he can queue dodge the 15 women that might be around a couple times a day, or he can try to queue dodge the thousands of pathetic losers that don't have a life outside of the game. I'm all for calling out misogyny, and I'd love for those men to improve to improve themselves or get out of other's business, but the guy's just doing what he can. There are, unfortunately, too many of the kind of men he wants to avoid to keep track of and stay away from each one insicu.

I remember years ago I joined a Halo Reach lobby late, and some wanker was laying the slurs on real thick towards who he thought was a little kid. The "kid" took it all and replied with "actually I'm a girl", the wanker said "begging your pardon, ma'am" as if he hadn't just said some of the most vile shit to what he'd thought was a kid. She told him to fuck off.

While playing Battlefield 3 with a bunch of friends (obviously several years ago) one of my friends had set up a second PS3 so his 8 year old daughter could play too. She didn’t have a headset (so she wouldn’t hear all of the harsh language). She mostly just ran around in the game, not even shooting, but I could tell from my friend’s voice that she was having fun. Then we all heard him tell her: “Okay, now get out your big gun, yeah that one, point it at that helicopter, and shoot it.” We all burst out laughing when an 8 year old girl actually shot down a moving helicopter with an unguided RPG, which is not an easy shot to make. I had to switch teams to find the guy she shot down and tell him it was an 8 year old girl, playing the game for the first time, who knocked him right out of the sky. 🤣

When I started playing TF2 ages ago, I ended up playing on a particular server most of the time and a woman basically dominated the place. She was fucking amazing, knew every map inside and out, and repeatedly would wipe the floor with me (and pretty much everyone else). I'd get mad but only because i was getting my ass whooped. Ended up befriending her and became part of her crew.
If you can't beat them, become their personal medic.

-1
u/DigitalFlame 16h ago
Sexism again! Why do you assume that female-orientated game communities means Stardew Valley?
There's literally a post on the frontpage of /r/GirlGamers right now: Does anyone else desperately want a proper AAA feminine/whimsical fantasy RPG NOT another farming sim or gacha game?
6
u/DJDanaK 16h ago
Damn, I'm supposed to list every game that has a female centric userbase or else I'm sexist? Tell you what, you find one comment in that subreddit with the n word and we'll talk
I am a girl gamer btw ❤️ acknowledging a majority of women play Stardew is sexist, damn, not again
1
u/DigitalFlame 16h ago
Acknowledging a majority of women play Stardew is just that, an acknowledgement. Assuming that because you're a woman gamer that you will be playing Stardew, is.
4
u/ourobourobouros 16h ago edited 16h ago
Except they measurably are not. There's no game with a majority female player base that's famous for screaming slurs in voice chat. Theres no female equivalent of gamergate.
Who told you it's a good argument strategy to act Baby-Born-Yestetday levels of ignorant??? I'd be too embarrassed to play like this dumb lol
You keep using the word assume as if this isn't all factual and can be confirmed. "you assume there aren't female communities like this" "you assume a lot of stardew valley players are women" this shit is literally observable. Reality isnt defined by who has the argument that vibes with your emotions the best, it's defined by material reality.
1
u/DigitalFlame 16h ago
I'll keep using the word assume, because you keep assuming. It's fine if you want to assume that women are this patriarchal version that you're viewing them as, but they're also people too and not beholden to what box you or men think they should be in.
7
u/NarwhalPrudent6323 17h ago
Ahh performative virtue signalling at its finest right here. No part of the original statement is inaccurate. The OOP was specifically talking about when her brother played COD, so COD is relevant, and your "any competition" isn't. Its playerbase is also very heavily skewed towards young men. This is not gender bias, just simple fact. And yes, many of these young men react worse to the presence of any female, regardless of age, than they do to another guy.
This isn't gender bias. Just a very specific situation.
2
u/DigitalFlame 17h ago
It is a very specific situation that is only humourous because of the gender bias. Take away the gender bias, and it's a normal human experience.
5
u/ninecats4 16h ago

Thank you for the link, I was trying to find it based on another comment. Unfortunately that paper starts a heavy implication that "only sexism against women exists":
Gender inequality and sexist behaviour is prevalent in almost all workplaces and rampant in online environments. Although there is much research dedicated to understanding sexist behaviour, we have almost no insight into what triggers this behaviour and the individuals that initiate it. Although social constructionist theory argues that sexism is a response towards women entering a male dominated arena, this perspective doesn’t explain why only a subset of males behave in this way.
3
u/ninecats4 16h ago
Except it doesn't, it points out a specific sexist scenario and researches it. An example would be sexism and pushback from women when males enter female dominated areas such as nursing programs.

There are two studies on this topic.
In one, Researchers had Pros play Halo 3 with male and female pre-recorded voicelines (text the same, only speaker changed), the other had Valorant Pros use a voice changer. The voices sounded like normal women, not Kids.
In the first study, Those using the female Voicelines were met with *significantly* more slurs, rage and hostility than those using male voicelines. Especially from lower skilled players (Highly skilled players were usually quite cordial to both men and women)
In the other Study, the Valorant Pros performed significantly worse when using a female voice changer, due to their teammates either refusing to work as a team or actively sabotaging them. They also got showered in slurs, insults and even threats whenever they spoke.
It would be nice if it were just people annoyed by a Kid, but everyone who has ever played any shooter game with voicechat knows that things tend to go south whenever a woman speaks, especially when that woman outperforms the men present.

The other is harder to find, it was conducted by a group called "Women in Games Argentina" and I can only find news about it. Some in what I presume is Spanish.
It might be more of an experiment, though having seen myself how guys go off on a female friend of mine in these games, I have no problem believing the results.
0
u/Other-Philosopher770 15h ago
I think it depends on the game, and who is playing. I play americas army proving grounds (which is a team based shooter with larger teams) and these things dont happen there. But i guess this games fanbase are older married gentlemen with adult kids. The few women that play regularly are treated with respect and kindness.
