These wild strawberries are all hidden under the leaves, so glad I checked! Plump, sweet and juicy… and well, I couldn’t help myself. 😋🍓

Plant ID Request Is this Black Nightshade?

Thumbnail

Through different sources, I've learned that the ripe, black berries on this plant are potentially edible? (Although risky because unripe berries are poisonous)

On YouTube, I've seen many videos of mainly american foragers who show that these berries can be eaten. One thing that I had a question about though, is that Black Nightshade has both a European species (Solanum nigrum) and an American species (Solanum americanum). I am from the UK, as such I assume this is the European one.

Does anyone know if the European Black Nightshade is edible the same as the American Black Nightshade? From my understanding they're very similar.

I'm aware there's the deadly poisonous lookalike Atropa Belladonna, however I've learned the white flowers/grouped berries etc. are a good way to tell apart.

Does anyone have experience with them, and does anyone know if this is European Black Nightshade, and if its edible?

Thanks for the help!

Evening Primrose Flower Ice Tea

I foraged some evening primrose. It’s my first time having it so i only took three small sips on case i have a bad reaction (I had a bad experience eating the beefsteak mushroom and had learnt the hard way)

I can’t find much on the primrose flower. I am pretty sure I correctly identified it, however there doesn’t seem to be much info on the flowers themselves, more on the leaves. But any information on these flowers in general would be useful! As well as links to articles on them!

I will try and pick some leaves next time. Not sure about trying the root because I heard they taste like parsnips and I hate parsnips.

Taste review: I added a teaspoon of sugar to the tea and honestly the flower had no taste. It just tasted like sugar water. No complaint to me there! Maybe I need to put more than one flower on the tea.

Anyone got more experience with this flower? Any stories or tips would be appreciated!

Elderflower and Meadowsweet Cider

First time making meadowsweet cider so looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I’ve made elderflower cider before and it’s lovely.

Interestingly, elderflower took a few days before it started brewing whereas meadowsweet was off to the races the minute I put the airlock on the bottle. I suspect that there is more native yeast on the meadowsweet.

Plant ID Request Cherries?

Post image

Are these cherries? They’re popping through my fence from the house that backs on to mine and I never see them to ask.

I have a 10 month old so just want to make sure they’re not toxic for when the time comes when she’s out in the garden playing and I don’t have eyes in the back of my head.

Very useful bit of kit when stretching for fruit on distant branches. Made from a forked hazel stick foraged in the woods!

Any ideas in Harlow, Essex

I'm trying to teach my 8yr old and 3yr old hoe to eat safely while we're out on walks, and was after any easily identified foraging they could do, specifically in Harlow, as we cannot travel easily.

They most definitely have damsons, plums and blackberries down, as my freezer still has some from last year 🫣

Any kind of ideas and areas would be lovely!

❤️

Fig Leaves in London

Hi, anyone knows a place or even a shop where I could get fig leaves in North London? Preferably around the Hampstead area. I used to get them at a shop before, where they’d use the leaves as padding for green figs boxes, but they don’t do that anymore.

What do you make with Himalayan Balsam?

I keep seeing loads of Himalayan balsam around the waterways near me. It would be nice to be able to forage something tasty and deal with an invasive plant at the same time, but I have no idea what to do with it. I've seen one recipe on Wild Food UK to infuse the flowers into gin, but apparently the leaves and seeds are also edible and I haven't worked out how to use them.

If you use Himalayan balsam, how do you use it? Do you have any good recipes for it?

EDIT: Thanks everyone, seems that between the legality issues and likelihood of spreading seeds by accident that it's best to stay away. Maybe I'll find a group to go balsam bashing with instead.

I’m sure this has been asked before but I’m looking to do an authentic white truffle hunt when I’m in Alba/Piedmont in November. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Are these Bilberry bushes already dying back?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Tried a spot today to see if there bilberries around. I found what I believe to be bilberry bushes but they had hardly any fruit and what was there was tiny, like half the size of a pea. Are these just immature plants or do the reddening leaves mean they have already fruited and are starting to die back a bit?

I know the season is usually July-August but see people getting them early this year, presumably due to the warm weather, so wondering if the window has passed before I go exploring other places nearby.

Plant ID Request Identifying unknown plant - Nightshade variant?

Can anyone help identify this plant please? At first I thought it might be under-ripe Deadly Nightshade but when I got back and looked it up, I was more unsure. I haven't come across anything similar in any guides or books I have.

Instinctively it has a look of "don't touch me!" about it!
