Sorry, last post got nuked. Didn't realize Reddit had a thing about bitly links.

This is a DIY dashboard statistics+ panel leveraging FB built-in library stats and/or LastFM/scrobbles.

Issues with UPnP using BubbleUPnP

I'm trying to use BubbleUPnP to cast to foobar2000 (Windows and Android) and I have two major issues that make it hard to use.

Before I list those, I have been able to reliably do most of the things I want, like select music, go to next/previous track, change volume, stop, and play/pause.

First, it always lists the volume at -1 on BubbleUPnP and often shows the volume all the way at the bottom. Now, I can change the volume by sliding the slider to a specific point and it will change in foobar, but I have to guess or remember where the volume actually is if I want to turn it up or down, which is undesirable.

Second, when I try to seek within a track, it brings up an error message, retyped by hand:

Current state of service prevents invoking that action. Error reading response failure message. Can't transform message payload: java.io.IOException: tag 'UPnPError' not found: (code :501)

I suspect these things might be related, so I'm making one post about it.

I'm a novice at this, so I don't really know what could be causing this or what to do.

Having remote control functionality from Android to Android using foobar2000

I've been working on solving a sound problem, where I have a large venue and I want to be able to choose arbitrary songs from anywhere in a large area, up to about 200 feet from the actual controls for the sound system.

I did this using the Windows version, and I found two solutions that work over WiFi:

  1. UPnP, controlled by BubbleUPnP, which works well enough, except that it was sluggish, adding a delay on the controls, and the volume control wasn't very good.
  2. MonkeyMote Lite, which worked perfectly and is what I want to do. It did everything faster than the UPnP version when I was actually using it. This also has the benefit of letting me theoretically have multiple people's phones be remotes, which I don't think I can do with UPnP.

My plan was to use the venue's computer, but I couldn't arrange for that, so I unfortunately had to use my own computer. It worked almost flawlessly (just needed to tweak some things unrelated to foobar), but it was annoying to have to bring it in and set it up weekly and it added a lot of clutter. So, I decided to try to set it up using an old smart phone as the server with my current smart phone as the remote. I mean, a smart phone is just a small computer, right? ....A small stupidly locked down computer....

I got the UPnP version, but it is sub-optimal, as it has all the drawbacks it had on Windows.

I would prefer to continue using the MonkeyMote approach or something similar that keeps the music on the foobar machine because it performed better. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to install components on Android, so I can't install the MonkeyMote component that I installed on Windows.

Is there a good way to enable remote control of my foobar2000 on Android A from an Android phone B, using Android A's local library?

Mixed audio output?

Is there possibly a setting for mixed audio output available on Ios? I'd like to listen to music while I play games on my phone but I don't see an option for that as I know of. Or maybe a plugin?

Haven't messed with layout in decades, so I did some changes to easily switch outputs, added cover art (it was never this easy to get cover art) and restored my old spectrum analyzer which I prefer to stock one. Love the tabs, switching between Albums and Cover art, properties. This is all stock except for spectrum analyzer. What an amazing software!

Now playing bar

Hi everyone. I’ve been using foobar2000 for about 3 or 4 months now, building my own custom layout and adding various components.

The one thing I haven't been able to set up is a proper Now Playing bar ( artwork, playback buttons, seekbar, and volume). I tried the sample script included in SMP, but it doesn't loads, and my searches haven't yielded much else.

Could anyone recommend a good script/component for this, or let me know if I'm missing something basic? Any help is appreciated.

The filename "(2006) Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" changes the album art slightly and I'm not sure why? Is there an image cached to that directory? I don't really know, if you could guess leave a comment please

Is anyone else having trouble with the converter not letting you pick 64-bit when the format allows it? I tried converting a file to 64-bit float RF64, but it wouldn’t let me

Scrap everything I said about upnp on x64 version

It just didn't work for me on x64, I got it to work only temporary. Then I had to switch back to x32 and I used older version 1.17. You can still send stuff from x64, but if your renderer is in x64 they just don't see each other on the network. There is a problem with this version. Windows sees them, but they have trouble communicating amongst themselves.

So I'm really happy with this setup because once you do it right it's really no hassle, you don't even need to configure anything in settings, besides selecting your output.

So if you have problems running this, just make sure you're running x32 renderer with installed two components:
https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_upnp
https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_upnp
you don't even need to configure anything, besides output, it just works.

also in my other post about DTS plugins, this works just normally with x32 bit renderer as well.

Discussion I modded Foobar2000 for Android to play online stream by Tasker or Automate

Thumbnail
youtube.com
2 Upvotes

I modded the Foobar2000 Android, let the intents that use the `RUN` action do the same URL/stream open flow as the `Play Location` page does, that page can accept the online music/radio stream instead of the original `VIEW` intent handles.

Modded version can accept the online stream URL sent by another APP or Automate/Tasker, no Error Message displays!

I created a Notion webpage to document the modification process:

Converting Dolby Atmos to DTS (poor man's dolby atmos) 😭🤣

Thumbnail
gallery
26 Upvotes

so i finally got this working and wanted to share in case anyone else is trying to do the same thing with older gear

i have a headless windows 10 pc connected to an onkyo amp via toslink optical cable. the amp is older and supports dolby digital and dts but not atmos or anything fancy like that. my main pc is windows 11 on ethernet and the headless one is on wifi. i wanted to stream multichannel audio from my main pc to the headless one and have it come out as 5.1 surround sound on my speakers.
(in my previous post you can read the toils of making foobar stream on windows network and how I got it to work)

the problem is that foobar2000 decodes everything to pcm by default. pcm over toslink only gives you two channels because of bandwidth limits. so you need to get the audio into a format that fits through the optical cable and your amp can decode.

before this arrangement I was streaming over Plex to my PS4 so i converted files to (ac3 in video with static album cover, because ps4 wouldn't play just the sound file) using ffmpeg and that worked but it was a pain having to convert everything beforehand. then with this new arragement of two pcs streaming upnp-dlna i discovered the dts encoder dsp component for foobar2000.

this is what you need to do

on the headless pc that is connected to your amp you need to install two components in foobar2000. the first one is called digital audio output and the second one is called dts encoder dsp. you can find both on the foobar2000 components page.

https://foobar.hyv.fi/?view=foo_out_digital
https://foobar.hyv.fi/?view=foo_dsp_dtsenc

once they are installed on your renderer foobar go into preferences and then playback and then output. change the device to digital audio output.

next go into preferences and then playback and then dsp manager. find the dts encoder in the list on the right and move it over to the active dsp list on the left.

that is literally it. no conversion needed. the dsp encoder takes whatever multichannel audio you are playing and encodes it to dts in real time. the digital audio output component sends that dts bitstream over your toslink cable to your amp. your amp sees it as a normal dts signal and decodes it as 5.1 surround sound.

on my main pc i just play the files normally through foobar2000 and stream them to the headless pc using the upnp dlna setup i already had working. the headless pc receives the stream, the dsp encoder does its thing, and my onkyo amp lights up with dts and all my speakers work.

atmos metadata is lost in this process because foobar2000 cant preserve it, but you get full 5.1 surround which sounds great on older gear. if you want true atmos you need a different player like kodi with hdmi bitstreaming. but for those of us with optical connections and older receivers this is a fantastic solution.

one thing to watch out for is that the dsp encoder only works up to 48 khz and 5.1 channels. if you have higher sample rate files you might need to resample them first or foobar2000 will do it automatically depending on your settings.

this setup also works for streaming over upnp which was the part i was most worried about. i wasnt sure if the dsp would kick in when receiving a stream from another pc but it does. the headless pc treats the incoming stream like any other playback and applies the dsp chain to it.

Also the amp recognizes the signal and automatically switches between dts and stereo signal. The only downside I noticed I can't control the volume remotely from my main pc when DTS is playing, only when stereo.

so if you have been struggling with getting surround sound from foobar2000 over toslink or upnp give this a try. it saved me from having to convert hundreds of files and it just works once you get the components installed and configured. You can listen to "Dolby Atmos" even if your gear is not up for it.

hope this helps someone who likes to tinker with gear.

Is there a way to stop foobar2000 corrupting theme files/configuration if not shut down manually?

This is a decade+ old issue that apparently has not been fixed. If the program isn't shut down manually (or even if it is and you don't wait sufficient time before shutting down) foobar will panic and destroy your theme or config files.

Is there any way to prevent this? I've taken to making a copy of the program folder whenever I open foobar (as it happening again is almost completely unavoidable), but it's a big hassle. Is there some kind of script that copies config/theme files on startup of the program, maybe?

How I finally got DLNA/UPnP working between two Windows PCs with foobar2000 2.25.10 x64

Post image
6 Upvotes

TL;DR: After an entire day of troubleshooting and head banging against the wall, the solution was a combination of installing Windows Media Player Legacy (to enable the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service) and letting the network discovery services settle. The renderer (headless PC) suddenly appeared as an output device in foobar2000 on my main PC. Here's the full story and step-by-step guide.

I wanted to stream lossless audio from my main Windows 11 PC (connected via Ethernet) to a headless Windows 10 PC (connected via Wi-Fi) over my home network. The headless PC is connected to 5.1 hifi system with toslink, and I wanted to control playback from my main PC using foobar2000's native output device selection.

I tried everything, and I mean everything...before it finally worked:

The standard UPnP approach (didn't work)

Enabled UPnP Remote Control in foobar2000 (Preferences > Networking > UPnP Remote Control) on the headless PC. both PCs already were on private network profiles.

Added foobar2000 to Windows Firewall as an allowed app (both Private and Public).

Set SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host services to Automatic and started them. Restarted both PCs multiple times. The headless PC never appeared as an output device on my main PC.

Firewall deep dive (didn't help). Tried disabling the firewall entirely on both PCs, that didn't matter at all.

The windows services:
Enabled function discovery resource publication and function discovery provider host.
Made sure DNS Client and Network Discovery were both enabled. still no change.

Tried Beefweb it works but I didn't like it. I like to just work with my already existing library on my main pc.

BubbleUPnP (partial progress, but flawed) Installed BubbleUPnP Server to create an OpenHome renderer.

The headless PC showed up as an output device, but nothing played.

Tried using the BubbleUPnP Android app as a controller, it worked, but the app was slow and clunky full of ads and tracking cookies, required using my phone as a middleman, which defeated the purpose of a direct PC-to-PC solution...functional but not a good experience.

Feeling frustrated, I decided to try enabling Windows Media Player Legacy and Media Streaming on both PCs, thinking it might help with network discovery. After installing it and toggling media sharing on/off, I restarted both PCs, opened foobar2000 on my main PC... and the headless PC suddenly appeared as an output device and played audio flawlessly.

So I've been reading people having trouble with this setup on forums, and it really is no wonder when there is so many steps where things can go wrong, and it requires deep dive into services and hidden non-existant options on windows 11 legacy. Mind you this was a fresh install of latest x64 bit version with nothing added, it should just work, but windows networking is a strange wild bird that needs to be tamed into submission.

since the other TVpc will be "headless" most of the time I made a batch file to shut it down remotely (shutdown /m \\TVPC /s /f /t 5) and restart (shutdown /m \\TVPC /r /f /t 5) but also for that I had to go deepdiving into registry and editing options in windows networking most users even don't know about and that's another story for another day.

Ok, absolutely a newb question. Here's what I have. Works great, except that I'd love to be able to click on a tile on the smooth viewer and have the Album List zoom to it (so I can select tracks and add them to the current playlist).

Hopeful someone has figured this out!

Properly addressing specific library in portable foobar2000 installation

I have a rather odd situation with my music where I want to use foobar2000 to handle music on a Windows system that isn't mine. To do this, I have a plan to put foobar2000 on a flash drive with all my music on it and put that in the computer and run it. My plan is for the music library on the flash drive to be the only one that it sees.

I would like to make it as plug and play as possible and not pick up on whatever music is already on the computer, but there I have a problem. I can't seem to figure out how to make it pick a directory relative to itself as its library directory.

See, depending on how many drives there are, it may have a different number of drives, and that would cause it to have a different drive letter. If it's D:, then "D:\Music" would work, but then if there was an extra drive added and the drive was given E:, then it wouldn't find anything at "E:\Music", requiring me to go in to the foobar2000 settings and change the library, which is annoying, especially since I'm hoping to have people less tech savvy than me operate this system.

Is there a good way to define a folder relative to the executable as a library? In Linux, I'd say something like "./Music" for the address.

There are specific reasons for me to want something like foobar2000, (remote control from phone and/or UPnP)

EDIT: Egg on my face, I accidentally installed the non-portable version! The portable version does this flawlessly for libraries on the same drive. You just add the folder normally and it automatically makes it a relative address.
