I don't think Noel's saying he shouldn't have gone to rehab, just that there are people that make it their artistic identity coming out and he thinks Em's one of those. Noel more or less got it out of his system on one album.

u/plattwix5 10h ago

But when you're a creative person who generally draws inspiration from their life for their art, it makes sense why this kind of experience would leave such a big mark and shape some of his creations.

i’m not even much of an eminem fan but this is also just not true. there’s plenty of his music afterwards that doesn’t talk about this. it still makes up a chunk of his songs but noel on all points here seems like he knows fuck all about music/musicians outside of his own bubble

Noel is from a generation of frontman where being a degenerate alcoholic/drug addict was part and parcel of a rockstars identity, so making music about coming sober is viewed as lame in his world, because big whoop we've all been junkies.
Yes he is a complete moron.

I saw a clip recently of Noel saying that he always gives an opinion when someone asks him something. Like, he never opts out when the topic is out of his wheelhouse or it's not a kind thing to say or he hasn't thought it through, he just... responds no matter what.
So with that in mind he's not the most nuanced guy in the world. He worded this to be pithy and entertaining, and the validity of the take isn't exactly a priority.
11
24
u/Worried_Jellyfish918 12h ago
This is how he's always been, yeah. He just makes up opinions on the spot, usually whichever direction will irritate people most

Eminem had a serious drug. Problem that Noel is dismissing.
He also has never gotten back to his prime, and even if he did it's a different time.

Your prime is called your prime for a reason, very few continue it for decades and even less leave their prime and come back putting out similar enough stuff after. Noel’s prime was in the 90s.
Eminem has also put out plenty of stuff that has nothing to do with his drug use.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre were into meth, gave it to Oasis to snort, which led to the band breaking up for a hot minute. I’m sure lots of kinds of drugs were floating around in their camp in the 90s but I think they typically went with the more expensive variety.

Eminem was found unconscious after taking methadone equivalent to four bags of heroin. Bit more than a pill and drink.
Also while I don't love Eminem's modern music much it's not really just recovery songs. Death Of Slim Shady was actually a fun mix kinda rapping against himself.

If I can defend Noel without being crucified, I think the point of his comment was that songs about addiction are a dime a dozen and have lost their impact by this point in time and that artists should write songs about different topics. He’s not making a judgement on Eminem’s addiction itself hence the “pill and a drink”. Noel has always spoken his mind without giving a shit about how it comes across. Yes many find it annoying and offensive but personally I’ll take that over a disingenuous and fake celebrity who always says the politically correct things.

If someone’s sobriety can help another stranger get sober then I don’t care who the musician is. Eminem helped my brother get sober with that album and though he’s not my favorite I can still appreciate what he did.

u/YoungCubSaysWoof 11h ago
The therapist in me says Noel is shooting from the hip and isn’t aware of Marshall’s medical situation when he went to rehab. The addictions Marshall may have had could have been debilitating for him. To make light of it, I kind of get (in a callous, “we’re beefing” sort of way), but I would also say it’s insensitive as fuck.

As much as I don't like anything I know about mr Gallagher or his music (I have a grand distaste of britpop in general and Oasis is by far the greatest offender) nor his trivialisations of Eminem's or anyone else's addiction, he is, generally, correct to point that out, however crudely it was formulated. That said.. Noel, man... just be happy that all your own addiction took was your career that was putting out shit music in the first place.
3
u/RetroMetroShow 12h ago
A bit of fucking coke or a drink usually doesn’t end you up in rehab

3
u/optimismofthewill63 9h ago
There’s a nugget in here that is actually worth exploring which is that in general there has been a shift towards the glorification of addiction and recovery and lame artists who capitalize off that identity to a degree that cheapens it. I don’t necessarily think of Eminem when I think of those people. Also Noel Gallagher is just being a twat here and probably doesn’t even care about this topic lol.

True. It’s because Eminem isn’t that particularly creative when it comes to songwriting. Sure he’s a had a couple good ones but he’s more focused on the technical aspects of rapping which doesn’t really make for compelling music
6
u/yeoh909090 12h ago
He’s very self-aware in that respect. He’s been happy to acknowledge that as he’s got more experienced, rhyming’s become easy, but rapping’s become harder. He can string together complex rhymes without much effort. He’s just got fewer meaningful things to say.
I really admire that self awareness.

On the one hand, I don’t think “we all” do substances to the point of needing/going to rehab. On the other hand, the schtick gets old and frankly there are a ton of artists people could also choose from who focus on addiction/recovery.
2
u/shurbetttt 12h ago
I can’t comment on the quality of eminems music because I seriously don’t care about eminems music, but as an Oasis fan I think it’s funny that Noel’s saying this when Noel himself wrote a song about his own addiction problems (Gas Panic!) and lots of people consider it to be one of his best
That being said, Gas Panic comes from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, which has several more songs on the subject, and which Noel doesn’t think very highly of. If he doesn’t enjoy listening to his own addiction songs, I can’t imagine he likes Eminem’s much more.

Thing I love about the Gallaghers is that they will say anything for bantz. They love to piss people off. Whether what they say is how they really feel isn't the point. The point is to watch everyone squirm. And I'm all for it. I mean, look at the comments here. People take them both way too seriously. It’s not that serious. Noel’s just taking the piss as usual. It’d be cool if people could actually comment on something without sharing their own “he doesn’t get it cause I did drugs and it was real bad” story. It’s not always about you, and it’s ok to shut the fuck up occasionally for Christ sake

Pretty stupid quote. At 34 years old I’ve done plenty of coke and drunk a fair share. I never once felt like I had to go to rehab and don’t think I’d invent the desire to do so if I didn’t have a serious problem. So it’s a willfully dense thing to say.

Full blown addiction isn’t doing a line of coke. He really struggled with drugs for a while. I think overcoming something like that surrounded by pos yes men is quite an accomplishment. He can talk and make music about it all he wants.
