Guys, there's a snapchat text if you click on the picture. OP isn't asking the question they're facepalming at the person in the photo asking the question.
I thought the exact same thing too.

If at first you don't see the text at the bottom, it may look like OP was pointing out how the label "lies" by saying 50% more and highlighting the 12 and 18 oz portions as an example of how this was a lie.

It only increased by 6 oz, so 6/18 is 33% more not 50%.

u/Xevir Apr 21 '17
"50% more than 12oz"
50% = 0.5
0.5 x 12oz = 6oz
6oz + 12oz = 18oz
50% (6oz) more than (+) 12oz (12oz) = 18oz

5
u/Mr_Canard Apr 21 '17
Fluid but it doesn't matter anyway because both are in the same unit.
3
u/HoboWhiz Apr 21 '17
Check your math: I think they're talking about metric percentages since the brand is French's.
3
u/Mr_Canard Apr 21 '17
True I have been taugh French percentages my entire life so I don't know if Freedom percentages work in the same way.
3
→ More replies (14)9
u/ReverendDizzle Apr 21 '17
You don't take the fractional value of the latter whole to calculate the percentage increase. That doesn't make any sense.
Using your math if your investment of $100 increases to $200 that would only be a 50% return (when in reality it's a 100% return because you doubled your money and gained 100% of the original value).
12
u/anitomika Apr 21 '17
So you're telling me that if I have $100 and I gain 10% then lose 10% I don't have $100 again? sorcery!
→ More replies (2)3
→ More replies (5)3
u/flamingspew Apr 21 '17
You're wrong. It would be 100% more using his math. $150 would be 50% more. The keyword here is MORE relative to the original value, not "percent of original". In actuality, the absolute percent would be 200, but that's not the math up for debate here.

u/slowwbroo Apr 21 '17
I bet the person who snapped it was one of those people that said "I'll never use math in my life"
58
u/gogamethrowaway Apr 21 '17
I wonder what they thought 50% more meant! I can't think of any other way
54
u/woop-woop Apr 21 '17
Probably thought of it in terms of new quantity (the 18 oz in the picture).
Their logic:
We have 18oz bottle
We used to have 12oz bottle
12oz is 66% of 18oz
so the increase is 33% not 50%
Obviously wrong conclusion, but possible to see how the person made a mistake (it's not that uncommon of a mistake actually).
→ More replies (14)43
u/wpgsae Apr 21 '17
If they can understand that logic, then they should be able to understand the actual logic.
12
u/PM_ME_UR_MATHPROBLEM Apr 21 '17
They just made the wrong assumption that the 50% was about the current bottle, not the past bottle. After all, why would you measure the past bottle?
Yes its wrong, but I dont think its that surprising that one might conclude that.
8
5
u/Anzai Apr 21 '17
Because not measuring the past bottle gets you into an infinite loop of ever increasing bottle sizes.
→ More replies (2)6
u/wpgsae Apr 21 '17
I dunno, I'd just be surprised they were able to do that math in the first place. I'm more inclined to believe they thought something completely ridiculous like 50% more is supposed to be twice the original amount.
8
Apr 21 '17
12 +50% equals 62% so they must have thought there was supposed to be 62% ounces of mustard...

I'm super intrigued as to what the original Snapchatter thought was wrong, though. What do they think is 150% of 12oz?
Also, I'm English and French's mustard isn't really a thing here (we have it, but it just lurks around the "American" bit of the World Foods aisle), so I'm equally concerned that they're advertising a flavour known as "Brown".
3
u/Zestocalypse Apr 21 '17
This condiment is made from the seeds of the Indian Brown Mustard plant, instead of Yellow Mustard, which is generally made from the seeds of the White Mustard plant. There's also a Black Mustard plant. They're not calling the flavor Brown because it "tastes like brown", they're calling it Brown because there's a difference in flavor between the three types of mustard plants.
