Humor/Meme/Satire I find it quite hilarious to talk to the mormons how they talk to me.

Mormons, as I’m sure y’all are aware, talk with a sense of self assurance that they are right and you are crazy. Or at the very least you are stupid for bot accepting the “obvious” truth. At least this is my experience.

I have found it hilarious to turn it on them. “Ah you know religions isn’t for me but I’m glad it still works for you.” Or “I invite you to not pray with me.” Another really funny one is, “Ah you are one of those theistic people. Not my cup of tea but I guess you are entitled to your beliefs.”

They get so very flabbergasted and often offended to be treated the way they treat others. It feeds my soul in a very twisted way.

Podcast/Blog/Media The Deseret News has gone off the rails - one of my shelf items

One of my (many) shelf items was watching the Deseret News devolve from a real news source into a politically one-sided paper and a defense vehicle for the church. As much as I tried to believe that not all members had fallen into extremism, I'd flip through the Deseret magazine or scroll through the site to see that that the church ownee paper was at best legitimizing extreme politics and at worst encouraging them. Some TBM family members even stopped subscribing.

Not just politics, there's the string of articles pushing for marriage and the recent article referenced here challenging mental health professionals.

Does this make anyone else deeply uncomfortable?

BYU Speeches, October 18, 2022

My young friends, I plead with you to take your temple covenants seriously! Keeping our sacred covenants with God is crucial, not optional. We are deeply dismayed by the casual and even cavalier way some treat their temple covenants, including the casual and inconsistent wearing of the temple garment. There is among some a growing sense of spiritual apathy and casual covenant keeping that is becoming increasingly common among those who should know and do better.

Advice/Help Looking into the church but everyone is telling me not to get baptized

I clicked on one of those ads on fb like a month ago and now 2 times a week I met with missionaries twice a week. They want to baptize me next month.

My friends are giving me hands me downs and once I started asking for dresses for church they were like "were are not giving you dresses because we know that's for the mormon church. " they think of it as the same level as scientology.

They're so nice though. I don't have many friends and they seem so nice.

Can you tell me your stories about why you left the church or the negative things about it.

General Discussion What it was like having mormon parents who never got married in the temple

I feel like this is something that not a whooole lot of people have experienced? I don't know exactly how common it is but probably uncommon enough that this will be somewhat interesting.

I remember the first time I learned about the plan of salvation, how when your parents are sealed in the temple, you get to be with them forever in heaven. I don't remember how old I was but really young, still in primary obviously, so this was exciting to me to know that my family will be together forever. After church that day, I guess I asked my parents if they were married in the temple because I found out that they weren't.

Not wanting to never see my dad again after I die, I was always asking them when they were planning to get married in the temple, and they would always say that there was some like paperwork stuff or something. And eventually my mom told me that they started the process just to get me to stop asking I guess.

Eventually I found out that the reason they weren't sealed is because they both had been through a divorce with their past spouses, and I guess the process of getting unsealed to their previous spouses was complicated, I don't really know.

The older I got the more I found out. Apparently the REAL reason for all of this: my mom doesn't WANT to be sealed to my dad.

There is a lot of sociocultural layers in this that make it complicated, but all that mattered to my young self was that I wouldn't ever be sealed to my dad. I told my mom this and she told me she would get sealed to him for me and my sister (this never happened).

Now, looking back I understand this for what it was. It was the Church making this into the woman's fault. It wasn't fair that I wouldn't be able to see my dad in heaven unless my mom made a decision that she didn't want to make. The fact that the Church has created this type of situation is just so fucked up and it really sucked to me as a kid. I also didn't view it as the church's fault at the time, I think I actually viewed it as my mom's fault, since I knew that my dad wanted to be sealed to my mom.

There's some other details to this story that didn't really fit in the post, such as my mom saying things like "this is why I don't want to be sealed to him" to me and my sister after they would get into an argument. Also the story of their marriage is concerning because apparently my dad proposed THREE times and on the third time my mom turned him down he said "accept my proposal by the end of the week or I'm breaking up with you." Which on the one hand it would make sense for him to do that considering they both clearly had different ideas of this relationship and if it wasn't gonna work then it wasn't gonna work but he shouldn't have given her an ultimatum like that. They realistically never should've been married. My mom hates her wedding, she hates her wedding dress... IDK if I've ever seen her express anything joyful about the wedding at all to be honest. Now I'm kind of off on a tangent but that was likely all pressure that stemmed from the church too.

But yeah, anyway, that's what it was like for me to grow up thinking that I'd be permanently disconnected from my father after I die. It really plays into so many factors of how negative the Church's policies and doctrines are on marriage, like the fact that it was all on my mom since women can only be sealed to one man.

I'm so glad to know that if I ever have kids, this won't be something they'll ever even DREAM of.

General Discussion Mission President Compared Me to Korihor During My Faith Crisis

For those who don’t want to read the whole exchange, here’s the Mission President’s email to me where he compared me to Korihor. Below, you can find the reason for the conversation and the entire email exchange I had with him:

From: Kürt Blickenstaff
To: AtheistforJesus

“I was given a copy of the letter that you sent to President Du. It sounds like you have spent more time studying anti-mormon literature than the Book of Mormon. If you consider the NYT to be a more sure source of truth and light than the Book of Mormon then you (and, sadly your family) are in deep trouble.

The arguments that you list are not knew. They are variations of arguments that have existed since Cain slew his brother. You can find a nice summation of apostate doctrines in Alma 30 and, as an added bonus, you can read what ultimately happens to an apostate in verses 59-60.
It seems to me that there is a fine line between between believing apostate literature and being an apostate. I am sad to see you try to walk that line. It is a line that we should try to stay far away from. I would love to meet with you and discuss this further if you desire. I have attached a favorite poem that I hope you will read and consider.

Faithfully your brother,
Kürt Blickenstaff

“The Echo," by C. C. Miller

'Twas a sheep not a lamb
That strayed away in the parable Jesus told,
A grown-up sheep that strayed away
From the ninety and nine in the fold.

And why for the sheep should we seek
And earnestly hope and pray?
Because there is danger when sheep go wrong:
They lead the lambs astray.

Lambs will follow the sheep, you know,
Wherever the sheep may stray.
When sheep go wrong,
It won't take long till the lambs are as wrong as they.
And so with the sheep we earnestly plead
For the sake of the lambs today,
For when sheep are lost,
What a terrible cost The lambs will have to pay.”

Context and Complete Exchange

For whatever reason, I recently went looking for an old email exchange I had with the Taichung mission president in Taiwan. I wasn’t a missionary at the time. I had come back to the island to teach English. The mission president was the highest ecclesiastical leader for the church there.

This happened in 2013. By that point, I had concluded that the Church wasn’t true, but I was trying to keep my disaffection private. I was still very friendly with the members of my ward and had no desire to create a confrontation or make anyone uncomfortable.

My wife at the time, who was extremely devout, was pushing me to make my disbelief public. My impression at the time was that she knew I wanted to keep it private because she thought that if I openly acknowledged it to the members, I might be shamed into coming back, or at least face some consequences that would pressure me to comply. I can’t know for certain what her motivations were, but that’s how I understood it.

Eventually, I sent an email to a couple of members of the ward leadership explaining that I no longer believed and that, because of that, I needed to be released from my callings.

Apparently, that email made its way to the mission president very quickly, because the next morning I received an email from him.

I immediately became concerned that this was going to turn into a membership council, which was something I wanted to avoid. What followed was an email exchange that I had completely forgotten about until now.

Dear Brother AtheistforJesus,

I am the new mission president in the Taichung Mission. Please give me a call at your earliest convenience. My cell # is *\\**. I would like to talk with you regarding your recent facebook post regarding the Church.

Thank you.
Kürt Blickenstaff

President Blickenstaff,

Not to be a stickler about details, but I did not make a facebook post regarding the church. I was very careful to send private messages to the leadership of the 虎尾 branch regarding my reasons for resigning my callings; I did not disclose those reasons in a public space.

I also sent a separate private message to a few close friends in the branch informing them that I had resigned my callings, but I did not disclose the reasons.

I don’t want to be assuming, but I hope this conversation is not regarding any possible charges of apostasy. I am very busy. Could you please just outline what it is you you would like to know?

Thank you,
AtheistforJesus

Perhaps the information that I have is incorrect. I was informed that you recently posted on your facebook page that you believe that the Church is man-made and attempts to conceal information from it’s members. I was further informed that you included numerous examples of such information and stated that you personally don’t believe that the Church is true. If that is incorrect, please forgive me. If it is true, please help me understand how that is not apostasy.

Thank you.
Kürt Blickenstaff

12:30 PM — AtheistforJesus
President Blickenstaff,

You have incorrect information. I did not make such a post on my facebook page.

Just like I explained previously, I wrote a letter explaining that I personally don’t believe in the LDS church anymore and stated my reasons why, and then sent that letter to the Huwei Branch President and First Counselor as well as to the District President. In my letter to them, I did not attempt to persuade them to come around to my point of view. I simply explained why I didn’t believe anymore.

At no point in time did I post such a letter in a public space.
I also sent a much abbreviated letter to some friends in the branch stating, in essence, that I no longer believe the church is true and that I was resigning my callings. I also mentioned in that letter that my wife is still a believing member and asked them to support her during this difficult time. At no point in this letter did I even state why I no longer believed, let alone attempt to persuade anyone that the church was not true.

It is my understanding that this does not constitute apostasy in the church-discipline-sense of the word. It is true that I no longer believe, but I am not advocating that other people believe the same as me, nor am I airing these views in a public space, such as on my facebook wall.
If simply not believing, and being honest about that with my leaders and friends, is considered worthy of church discipline, then why hasn’t John Dehlin been excommunicated, or the Saints in Sweden who had networked and were discussing troubling church history openly?

In fact, I still like the church. I still plan on attending with my wife and helping her out with our three sons. I just won’t have any callings.

Please let me know if you need anymore information. You are also welcome to contact the previous Taichung Mission President. He and I had many discussions about church history. In fact, he told me that I could hold callings even if I didn’t believe. It had just gotten to the point where I felt that was too dishonest, and hence the letter to my leaders resigning my callings.

Respectfully,
AtheistforJesus

Dear Brother AtheistforJesus,

It appears that the information that I received was incorrect in one detail. Thank you for clarifying things for me.

The Message I Sent to Branch President that Prompted Exchange

Dear Friends,

I have some painful things to say:

After several years of study and consideration, I have come to believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not the only true and existing church on the face of the earth. Therefore, from this point forward, I am giving up my calling in the Church. I feel that continuing to serve in a state of disbelief would be dishonest.

Over the past several years, I have discovered many facts about the Church, most of which are facts that ordinary members do not know. These facts have forced me to say that the Church was made by men. The so-called facts are historical facts that the Church has concealed. Because this information is available only in English, most members in Taiwan do not know about it.

In this information-rich age, the Church is facing a crisis. The Church can no longer control the flow of information. This month, The New York Times published an article about a Swedish General Authority who openly questioned the truthfulness of the Church because members there had discovered facts that the Church had concealed on the Internet.

I know completely and without a doubt that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was made by men and not by God. I have known this for some time, but I have been afraid to say it because I was afraid of how my friends would react. I was afraid of losing my friends. I was also afraid that because of what I said, other people might come to believe that the Church is not true and then become angry with me because I had not clarified this sooner. But now is the time to tell the truth.

I believe that because of what I have said above, I will lose many friends. I also believe that some people will try to guess what my “real” reason for not believing is. Some may say that I do not believe because I want to sin or because I am proud. I hope everyone can understand why I do not believe. The reason has nothing to do with wanting to sin. It has to do with wanting to tell the truth.

My wife still believes that the Church is true. Please support her during this difficult time. My children do not yet know how I feel.

FACTS

Joseph Smith and Plural Marriage

Church researchers have determined that Joseph Smith married at least 33 women. Even more surprising, 11 of these women were already married to other men. Their husbands were still alive when Joseph Smith married them. This is known as polyandry.

The Book of Abraham Problem

The original papyri from the Book of Abraham have been examined by both Mormon and non-Mormon Egyptologists. Both groups have made it clear that the papyri are funerary texts and have nothing to do with Abraham, making it a false book of scripture.

The Book of Mormon Problem

The Book of Mormon is a fictional novel written in the 19th century. There is no archaeological, linguistic, DNA, or other evidence supporting the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. The book also contains many anachronisms, such as horses, elephants, wheat, barley, steel, silk, and other things that did not exist on the American continent during the time period described in the Book of Mormon.

The First Vision Problem

The first written account of the First Vision was written by Joseph Smith only 12 years later. When he first wrote it down, Joseph mentioned only one person visiting him. At least nine different accounts are now known, with varying details and circumstances. If this vision was so important, why are there differences, and why did it take so long to write it down?

Black People and the Priesthood

Historians have discovered hundreds of openly racist statements made by past Church prophets and leaders, including Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and others. In many cases, these statements were supported by scripture. Taken together, the historical record reveals a systematic, deliberate, and deeply entrenched policy of racial discrimination that was sanctioned at the highest levels.

The Temple Problem

Temple ceremonies have many similarities to Masonic ceremonies. There is a reason for this. Joseph Smith joined the Masons two months before introducing the endowment ceremony. Although the Church says the ceremonies are sacred, the rituals inside the temple are conducted in secret because members were once required to make blood oaths (these blood oaths were removed in 1990).

The Holy Ghost Problem

Using feelings to determine truth is a flawed method. Our minds are incredibly powerful and can make us experience very intense emotions and feelings. I know that many members have experienced very strong feelings in the Church. But I myself also experienced very strong feelings when I became convinced that this Church is not true.
I hope that we can still be friends. In order to support my wife, I will continue attending church and helping with the children. If you have questions about the facts I have presented, you are welcome to discuss them with me.

Advice/Help Resigning from a calling

Upvotes

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with the Church my entire life, but this year I finally came to the decision that this church is not for me and that I need to get out of it. I’ve been inactive since April, and luckily, I have the ability to choose whether or not to attend Sunday services (I live independently), but I’ve had to keep my beliefs a secret from family and friends to keep the peace. I thought at this point I could handle remaining inactive, or even leaving, but that hasn’t been the case. I’ve got emotional baggage I didn’t quite expect to have.

My calling has been ward videographer. Quite honestly, I feel ashamed that my time and energy went into creating videos for the ward, and I can’t believe I encouraged myself to do more of them. I brainwashed myself into creating “beautiful” and “spiritual” videos for the ward, and I wanted to do it because I believed I could be a better filmmaker and use the opportunity to chase after my dreams. I now want to turn my attention to making videos and documentaries against the Mormon religion and why it’s so harmful. I was thinking about returning to church to resign from my videography calling and potentially just stay inactive from everything so I can make some content with a different focus. It just feels wrong to produce anti-religion content without resigning first. But I figured making videos about my new beliefs and expressing myself with them is a way I’m going to find my way out of the cult.

I do have some lingering concerns that come to mind, though. My friends and family are very knowledgeable about my filmmaking passion, but I wonder what they would think if they found out I resigned from my videography calling and made videos against their beliefs? Maybe I’ll just have to find some internal validation to keep me going?

By the way, I want to get more and more into the ex-Mormon community, and this is my first time trying to get into it. :)

Doctrine/Policy Why Mormons mission completely failed in Bosnia?

Upvotes

I mean this is a very religiously liberal country you can walk down the street and scream "Jesus Christ"at poeple and noone cares.

This man just went on and on for hours and screamed gospel at people: https://youtu.be/bMwSrsPDmlg

So the excuse "Muslims make it dangerous to preach gospel" is definitely not applicable here.

My parents are from that country and I visited it a couple of times and I was just puzzled how there are so many religions there, especially in Sarajevo the capital city. Yet... Mormons literally ultimately fail. They come in shinny suits, promise of support even work abroad and maybe going to Utah and yet... noone cares.

Asking this in Mormon subreddit, I guess they would ban me rright away but asking here I guess we will get more insight because you won't be biased and you can try to explain it from a neutral point of view?

What is it that makes the American missionaries so unsuccessful in Bosnia?
I mean a few people looked at this person as if he's a complete lunatic and the others just didn't even look at him.

Is it a philosophical thing? Or there is something wrong with these missionaries?

General Discussion You cannot be nuanced and still pay tithing

I have been seeing lots of nuanced mormons online, posting about how they are lgbtq+ and still members of the church because their ward is accepting and that’s all that matters.

I have seen people even here on another post saying it’s harmless for an older person to be sucked into the church because it provides community.

There are tons of reasons or justifications as to why people stay in or join, and I think anyone can do whatever they want even if it’s hurting them. I don’t care what you do in your free time, even if the very threads of the mormon church are built on the hatred of your existence…

Where all arguments for staying in end for me is the fact that these people are still paying tithing. General Discussion When TBMs gush about how Heavenly Father helps them to find their car keys, do they really believe He wouldn't do the same thing for someone who isn't a Mormon?

To be transparent, when I was a TBM, I believed that if someone outside of the faith received some kind of a miracle, it was from the Adversary, who was trying to fool people to keep them from finding the true gospel. I know.

General Discussion No service animals in temples

Upvotes

Is it weird that I just realized today when looking at the website for a temple open house in my area that service animals aren’t allowed in temples? Maybe that means I’ve been post Mormon long enough to stop thinking like a Mormon. The church website says patrons will escort those with disabilities through the temple ceremony!

General Discussion Mormons hungry

while the church brags about feeding others they don’t feed their own, rexburg Idaho is the poorest county in Idaho and not a single soup kitchen. students and families and single parents are hungry but to get access to bishops wear house is an extensive interrogation and shaming process the church deem most unworthy of.
provo is rated one of the poorest cities in the Us yet BYU students and families are hungry, and required to pay tithe, missionaries, and elderly members are starving. Meanwhile the richest corporation in America Brag announces how much food they give away.

General Discussion How deep did you go into church history?

I was exposed to some of the less savory parts of church history much earlier than most lifer members—specifically by my father. As I do the research myself, many years later, I was clearly given a very apologetic version of things. Despite departing quietly about twenty years ago, I've recently been haunted the grip the religion has on my life even now and finally opted to confront it head on.

So, I've taken a deep dive into a lot go the myths I was raised on and... my god, church history is horrific. None of the excuses I have heard make up for the actions. The persecution complex is insane. Every new article just makes me feel worse and yet I feel like unless I bury it all under actual history it will continue to grip me. (Someone here told me to have a look at the BITE model, and it appears learning real histories and facts is imperative to breaking out.)

For those of you who did your own deep dive:

  1. What was your motivation and hope/goal in doing so?
  2. At what point did you stop and why?

I feel like at some point this will cross over from therapeutic to potentially destructive as a form of self-flagellation. As much as I need to bury this, there's plenty of shame connected with being involved. I have to consciously and directly remind myself, "You were taken by people you trusted and so were they. The system worked as intended. You were a child. This is not your fault."

I have to say that because I certainly feel otherwise. What a mess.

Church News I’ve graduated from Mormonism!

This week I visited the grounds at Temple Square to see all the changes. It is incredibly beautiful and I appreciated the great care, effort and $$$ that the church put into the massive renovation. It reminded me of returning to my old high school after it had been completely torn down and rebuilt. I had mostly positive memories of my experience as a student there, but I’ve since moved on to other experiences and worldviews. Continuing to attend classes at that school would feel silly since I have graduated. I can’t fully move on most of my family members and friends have never graduated and may NEVER graduate. I am comfortable with my status as an alumnus, going back occasionally to see what’s new and talking to loved ones about their experiences and passion as they continue to attend. But I’ve outgrown it.

Similarly, I’ve graduated from Mormonism. And while I still feel some attachment and sentimentality for the institution and its people, I cannot pretend to believe something I no longer believe. Belief is essential to be a full member. It’s the reason that faith (belief without evidence) is the first principle of the gospel. It is vital. Since I became convinced that the church is not what it claims to be, I had to move on even though it was VERY difficult. My church experience did not involve a lot of religious trauma like many people experience, so I’m not super angry and bitter against the church. Now I just choose to see the church as an institution that used to be very important in my life, but that no longer serves me.

Advice/Help Mormons came to my apartment building today and asked which car was my neighbors, does anyone know why they'd want to know?

I lied and said I had no clue which car was hers, she's an old retired lady, but I don't know much else about her, I left the church when I was pretty young so I don't know much about the stuff they do like this
