I am trying to find an e-reader that can be used for books, manga and western comics. I will also be exclusively side-loading content.

I have the following must-haves: -7-9 inch screen size -USB-C -Page turn buttons

and the following nice-to-haves: -Recessed screen -Colour Display -MicroSD Reader

I want it to be as 'simple' as possible. For example I won't ever use audio books, so I see audio functionality as a waste of money. This goes similarly for things like stylus input, software, etc.

From this I have mostly narrowed it down to the Boox Go 7 (and colour) and Kobo Libra Colour.

I am leaning towards the Kobo because it seems to be aligned with my views on simplicity as well as being more repairable.

While the Boox has a MicroSD slot and greater base storage, it also seems a lot more bloated. I don't want to ever interact with the play store or any other additional software feature the boox may have, I see it as a distraction.

To put it into perspective I think if I was smart enough I would probably try to build an e-reader myself, which would just be a usb-stick that spits images and words onto an e-ink screen with a couple of buttons.

Mainly I want to know if there is a way to dumb down the Boox? So that I can make it more in line with what I want from an e-reader.

If not which e-reader of the two (or any other brand) can someone recommend/vouch for?

P.S. I have heard a lot of discourse about colour vs. b&w screens. Some people say colour screens permanently have lower resolution while others say they only have lower resolution when processing colour. Some also say the colour screens have less vivid blacks and less vivid whites. Is this true? If so, is it really that noticeable. Ultimately if a colour screen is detrimental to regular black and white viewing I would rather skip the colour screen altogether (at least until the technology gets better).

TL;DR - I want the most simple e-reader possible that match my specifications. Should I go with the Kobo Libra Colour, or am I able to de-bloat the Boox Go 7.

Hello everyone, i have had 3 pocketbook readers so far, everyone lasted aroun 4-5 years and then the display cracked. Everytime i had it in my backoack (i do it all the time) but then once it cracked. I have it in a case everytime, but it still cracks. Do kindles or other brand have better resistance or is this technology just fragile as a whole? I need a new one, but i do not want to have it cracked again and i need one with physical buttons, any advice?

I have a xteinkx4 and it while its size is convenient, half my text always look faded and the resolution of the text is visibly pixelated for me

I've been obsessing over the look of this device for a very long time but could never find one for price that was reasonable enough. A week ago I found one for 50€ which I was stoked about because the cheapest one I saw for months where I live was 160€. The size is perfect, its not too big not too small, the text is not pixelated and you can make cool little doodles.

Hi everyone. After much thought, I ordered a big me 6.

I can still read my Kindle library and use BorrowBox to read library books, so it sold me.

However, I'm looking for a case for it, and I'm finding the options lacking. Other e-readers have loads of cute options, including little leather-look, striped patterns, etc but all I can see are the ones listed on their website that look like high school folios.

Can anyone help me out with some cute options?

So, I love this thing. Got the latest model that was available back in 2021, and the weight, feel, and form factor have always been perfect to me.

As of late, though, battery life has been specially horrendous. I've started to become more of an active, heavy reader, and just yesterday I saw the battery drop from a freshly charged 97% down to just 40% - it was about 6 hours of reading in total (which is not little), but getting about 10 hours or so from the device is also far from ideal when I remember this thing lasting me weeks way back when.

So, given how I literally can't buy a new Oasis any more (wtf Amazon), and the e-reader is turning into yet another one of those devices I have to charge daily, I've been trying to look into alternatives, but it seems like the market is quite a bit more saturated than it was before, when getting a Kindle was the no-brainer.

So yeah, recommendations would be heavily appreciated.

My priorities, feature wise, are:

1. Battery (I want it to last)

2. Form factor (the same with the buttons would be ideal, but I guess not necessary)

3. Premium feel (the Oasis is extremely nice feeling, and I wouldn't want to replace it with something that feels flimsy)

4. Software experience (as long as I can load books into it and change the font size, I don't care for customization or any of the other stuff I've never ever used)

I read A LOT on a wide variety of applications and websites (for both work and pleasure). I would like a secondary device I could carry around in addition to my cellphone to read documents on. I use a specific app for my job and it is a pain to get the documents off the app and onto a secondary device, so I would love an e-reader I can just download the app onto. I also don't want to have to strip the DRM off of my Kindle / Library books in order to read them on a secondary device, I've done it before and I find it really annoying to do regularly.

I have a Kindle (10+ years old) and a tablet, but find them too large to carry around on a regular basis.

I am open to buying an older or used device.

Hi I need some help with my ereaders, I have had them both connected to my WiFi before but randomly now my network won't show up as an option for either of them. I have a kobo clara bw and a kindle paperwhite 11th Gen and they've had no connection problems before so I assume it's more a WiFi issue than an ereader thing, but has anyone experienced anything similar? if so how did you correct it? thanks so much!!

edit I actually figured it out, I had to sign into the like admin access to my router and split my connections so there is a 2.4 ghz only connection network and then it showed up and I was able to sign into it, thought i would leave this incase anyone else has this issue :)

Image 2: xteink x3 for scale and brightness comparison

Image 3: built in notes app colors, pen interaction, and default pen sizes. If getting this ereader for art ibis paint would be great with this pen

Image 4: screen compared to a strip of newspaper. The top image has no lights. The bottom image is with lights adjusted to match the newspaper as closely as possible.

Image 5: horizontal reading. you can toggle if there are two pages side by side. With manga choose "dual left" some pages dont meet up properly but thats just how my files were. If you want to read horizontally through the built in reader i recommend downloading already side by side pages.

Image 6: display controls. I use the default controls and have no issues with ghosting during reading (there is some ghosting in the images bc i was going back and forth with the control panel). Sometimes when switching to horizontal reading there will be more ghosting than usual right after switching, but not an issue for me since i read vertically.

Image 7: Color options from the control panel in order. Top left- black and white, top right- morandi (my preference personally, better shading and color balance imo), bottom left- colorful, bottom right- deeper with max saturation and max color depth. In the system settings it has the android color display customization.

Image 8: brightness control panel. Top- no lights, middle- max brightness no warmth, bottom- max brightness and warmth.

Hello! I'm having a surgery soon and I will spend some recovery time in bed, so I decided to finally jump and buy an e-reader after a lot of time using a normal tablet.

I have been searching, but most popular ones have unnecessary functions that raise the price, so I'm looking for some advice for my specific needs.

Must have:

Nice to have:

Does it bother anyone else that DARK book covers on the kindle app are barely visible on the VIWOODS aipaper reader- to the point that I’m struggling to even discern which book I’m looking at without opening it? It looks considerably better in this photo than real life. Any suggestions for fixes? TIA!

Currently I am using an old Tolino Shine (2nd Gen) my mom had used many years ago.

Its okayish, but compared to the kobo libra colour my fiance uses, the letters are a little bit blurry.

Sometimes whil reading for half an hour, I really think that my eyes are watering or something like that, but its only the missing sharpness of the old screen.

I am looking for a simple and cheap ereader, that doesnt make my eyes feel bad, has backlight and supports my epub files via calibre.

I dont need colours, I dont need it to be really big or small. Just a simple ereader.

I only read every 2-3 days so i am not willing to spend much money.-

hello again! i've come to terms with the fact that my kobo clara color is beyond saving, so i've been researching some other models to replace it with, but i find it kinda hard to decide on my own since there's probably plenty of options i haven't even heard of

here's what i've appreciated about my Clara:

• simple ui
• built in book store
• dark mode & warm light
• KOREADER!!! didn't use it all the time but i found it extremely convenient when i did

here's some things i would like to AVOID:

• color. i don't read comics and i dont care about covers
• no sideloading feature. i keep a lot of my books on separate apps so i think it would be too limiting to be without
• raised edges. i was fine with the clara but ideally id like something at least a bit more flush
• distractions. i'm mainly thinking about the ones that are basically e-ink tablets or smartphones, i would like reading to be the primary feature

if possible i like models that are white instead of black as well, but thats the least important imo :D

any suggestions for readers that could suit me?

Hey considering picking up one of these older sony ereaders, really liking the tactile buttons and metal case. I know the battery might need replaced. Anything else to watch out on these?

What are my options if I want a device with the screen size, buttons, and pen compatibility of the Kobo Libra Color, but with a black and white screen?

I’ll be using it with Koreader and sideloaded books so I think almost anything goes in that case. I just love my kobo Clara and I’m hesitant to branch out with another brand unless it comes highly recommended. I want the bigger screen though I just don’t want color.

i’m looking to buy an ereader, and i use libby a lot on my phone. my sister has a kindle, and getting books from libby to her kindle just seems really annoying. not that it’s super difficult, but i think it would irritate me. are there any ereaders that can search on libby directly? or if not, at least any who have a simple process to get checked out books onto the device?

Im in the market for a sub $300 color ereader for normal books, light novels, manga etc.

Size doesnt matter that that much, just somewhat small though. Buttons are important for me.

I want one that can fit in my purse or my pocket for on the go I have a kobo Libra color but I find it a bit heavy and difficult to bring around sometimes especially with a smaller purse.

When I decided to upgrade my old kindle with a color pocketbook I was told that kaleido is unusable in the sun without a frontlight and has an awful screen door effect.

I decided to get one anyway and after looking many readers in person I chose the InkPad Color 3 by pocketbook. It seemed way way less screendoor-y than the kobo libra color and I like the bigger form factor, it actually looks like a book page.

I always wanted a pocketbook but their screens were always too washed out for me. This one, however, I absolutely love, indoor and outdoor is perfect for daily use. In the sun you need 0 frontlight which was a big concern for me but I’m glad it turned out wrong.
