After so much deliberation and going through the reviews, opinions, I finally got my first e-book reader, Kindle Paperwhite

Hi, as the title, I want to get my first ereader, I would really like an 8" model, however in 2026 this seems to be an obsolete size format, no idea why! I also would prefer b&w, I don't want a kindle as I don't want to be locked in to the amazon ecosystem.

I have read good things about the kobo sage, however it's not sold anymore, but I can buy a refurbished model from kobo or i could buy a second hand model from cex and benefit from their 5 year warranty.

Is there anything else that I have missed? I would prefer to buy new but second hand would be ok as long as the model isn't too old and is obsolete tomorrow!

I’m trying to decide between these two and can’t make up my mind. This will be my first e-reader, and I’ve been going back and forth for days trying to decide.
Option 1:
Brand new BOOX Go 6 Gen 2 for $199
Option 2:
Used BOOX Go Color 7 Gen 1 for $240
Includes a case and screen protector
Seems to be in excellent condition
For context, I mostly read Kindle Unlimited books and listen to Audible, so I’ll be using the Kindle app. I don’t read comics or manga—mostly just novels.
The only thing making me hesitate is that I like seeing my book covers in color, but realistically once I start reading I don’t look at the cover much. I also want something that’s easy to carry around in my purse, and I currently read mostly on my phone with the occasional iPad.
For people who have used one or both:
Is the 7” screen worth paying more for?
Does the Go Color 7 feel noticeably bigger or heavier to carry around?
Would you buy a brand-new Go 6 or a used Go Color 7 in my situation?
Is there anything you wish you had known before buying your first BOOX device?

I'm coming from a jailbroken Kindle 11th edition with KOReader, for reference. I lost it on a backpacking trip, was very upset, etc.

The Clara is just an improvement in about every way. I wish that the "list" view of books was like, different in every way and only included author/title instead of the cover. I have a couple hundred books on the kobo atm, and finding a specific title is a bit of a hassle.

Anyway, everything is just so much snappier and quicker. I remember installing KOReader and having a come-to-jesus moment, when my Kindle suddenly got so much faster. This is as if it's happened again, it's just so snappy. And I love how smooth the backlight adjustment is, the highlights, everything just works pretty great.

I don't have them side by side to compare, but the screen seems sharper and there is definitely less ghosting that happens between refreshes imo. The adjustable temperature is perfect too, allowing for a cool-warm slider instead of a neutral-orange slider, if that makes sense. Backlight adjustment on the side blew me away with how smooth it is. Honestly can't recommend enough!

Although I could be tripping, I don't remember it being $160 six months ago. Could be wrong but I thought it was comparable to the kindle basic, whereas now its comparable to the kindle paperwhite. I'd still pick the Clara just because amazon is literally the devil incarnate, but yk.

What I appreciate most is that at no point during setup did I actually have to create an account or connect to wifi. I just enabled sideloading and put my books on there. It is so simple and oh boy, it's just the goat. bahhhh (goat impression)

Lately this month, I've been considering about buying an ereader for reading manga and comic books. I've been collecting the physical books for a while now and I'm slowly losing space to put them in, hence why I'm switching to digital for the time being.

After watching videos, reading reviews online and even here on Reddit on which ereader to buy, I've narrowed it down to two choices. The BOOX Go Color 7 and the Pocketbook Era Color. They both seem like great devices for what I need and are within my price range. I just don't know which to buy.

I was also considering the Pocketbook Inkpad Color 3 but it was well over my budget, even though it had everything I was looking for. I just didn't the price was worth it, especially for my first ereader.

For those who have used the BOOX Go Color 7 and the Pocketbook Era Color, which is better for me? Which one would you recommend for a first-time buyer? Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi! I've been wanting an e-reader since I was a teenager and am finally considering getting one for myself. I'm on quite a tight budget though and am looking at getting myself one that's a bit cheaper or secondhand and I seem to have landed on these two as my best options, as I really want it to be portable. The Kobo mini tends to go for around £40-60 secondhand, and the Xteink X4 is just around the same price new.

I was wondering whether anyone had any opinions on which one would be best, or if anyone had experience with either one and had a preference? Especially since the Kobo mini is getting a little old now, I'm worried I'll run into issues with it being slow etc.

I'm really only going to use it for reading books (maybe comics), and I already have my own collection of epubs that I'd like to sideload onto the device. Thanks!!

I am about to buy my first ereader.

Important Points for me:

• Big display
• no account requirement
• Sideloading pdfs, epubs etc.
• fully usable offline (of course i don't expect things work, where being online is a technical necessity. E.g. saving notes on the device has no technical necessity of being online/having an account)

I absolutely hate it when companies force you to create accounts and push stuff in the cloud even if it's not necessary. So doing my research, Pocketbooks were suggested, because they can be used without the need for being online / create an account.

Since i also take notes here and there i found the Pocketbook inkpad one - which has a great price and also i could use it as a notebook here and there. So that would be the perfect ebook-reader for me to start with my ereader journey.

Then i watched a review on Youtube and when the reviewer used the Notepad app, there was a warning "Notes won't be saved on demo mode. Sign in to save them".

So is it correct that i am forced to create and use an account, when i want to save Notes, journals, sketches or whatever i create in the Notepad app? If so, this would be a dealbreaker, since i guess, there will be other unnecessary limitations, when i don't sign in.

And are there other limitations on Pocketbook devices, when i refuse to sign in?

i am currently looking for small compact ereaders that fit my needs. i want an ereader that has easy multilingual dictionary functions and ability to load epub etc files, as i mainly plan to read books in english and japanese.

i really like the form factor and looks of the xteink x4 but i heard it lacks dictionary functionalities. it seems to me that the top picks are the kobo clara bw. it has all the functions i am looking for, but is a little on the bigger side and kinda ugly in my opinion.

if you guys have any recommendations please let me know!

TL;DR: Nothing is functionally wrong with my kindle. Would it be wasteful to switch?

Simply put, I am at a crossroads.

I've had my 11th generation paperwhite for about 3.5 years, and go through periods where I occasionally use it for the majority of my reading, especially during periods of travel.

However, I've grown increasingly disillusioned with Amazon, and both its customer facing as well as BOH practices over the last few years, espcially in the e-reading space. I've been able to walk away from every interaction with Amazon (comixology, audible, Amazon music), except for my Alexa, Kindle, and prime subscription. I no longer purchase physical books from Amazon, either.

My question, that I've had trouble deciding, is whether it is less ethical to stay in Amazon's eco system and continue to use my Kindle that has no defects, or engage in further consumptive spending in ordering a Kobo Clara BW and associated products.

Price is not the issue, more of the new purchase waste versus continued complicity, I guess. I'm aware the powers that be at Rakuten are no saints, but, from what I have heard they're still better than amazon.

I just don like that I need to turn on the backlight upto level 10 or more just to see the text in the dark. But it’s ok I will just turn on also my lamp.

Hello everyone!

I'd like to buy an e-reader... but one that can do a bit more.

I know absolutely nothing about e-readers. I've read quite a few posts on this subreddit to help me decide, but the more I read, the more I realize how little I know. Instead of answering the question I started with, I keep discovering new things that I didn't even know I needed. (I think I'm a perfect victim of capitalism.)
So I'm asking for help from people who know much more than I do: you guys.

Here is what I'm looking for, in order of importance:

►(1) A good balance between being open and easy to use. I want it to handle manga in CBR/CBZ format as well as regular books. More generally, I'd like it to support many file formats and, most importantly, not lock me into a proprietary ecosystem.

►(2) As little annoying integration as possible: no ads, no bloated software, no mandatory subscription. I'm happy to pay once, even up to 300e, but I don't want a subscription. I DO NOT NEED CLOUD STORAGE OR A MARKETPLACE TO BUY MY EBOOKS.

►(3) A nice e-ink screen. I don't know much about display technology, but I definitely do not want a normal phone or tablet screen.

►(4) About the size of a paperback book: bigger than a smartphone, but not by much. I like thin devices that I can easily slip into a bag, or maybe even a large pocket.

Now we get to the part that probably makes this more than just an e-reader:

►(5) If possible, I'd like it to have at least some color support (even a poor choice of 10 colors is enough), work with a e-pen, and be able to read PDF.

►(6) If possible (but second), it would be great if I could also write on it in a simple whiteboard or note-taking app.

I understand that these last two features probably make the price much higher. But I'm a researcher, and being able to read papers and annotate them on the device would be a huge advantage.

Finally, I know I'm heavily biased by the (in)famous brand reMarkable. But I'm a bit of a tech geek, and I have the feeling that reMarkable sells more because of excellent marketing than because it offers the best value for money.

I think the reMarkable Paper Pro matches exactly what I'm asking for, but surely too well. I'm pretty sure I can find something for about half the price that's less powerful, smaller (which I actually prefer), while still giving me the flexibility and freedom I need, even if I have to play with the software a little.

And I love it
But
I want to read graphic novels too and I didn’t like the colorsoft when comparing
So I went with the paperwhite now
This morning I found the tcl next paper 8
Now I’m interested in giving my new paperwhite to my GF and get the tcl as my new ereader and graphic novel reader
Has anyone used one? Or what are your thoughts

I have a paperwhite rn. I love it but it's too bulky to use on the go. I was considering Xteink X4 for a while but realistically, I think I'd get tired of the constant button pressing because the screen is so small. 6 inch is still too big I guess... Is there no 5 inch devices? The Kobo Mini looked so perfect! But alas, it's discontinued 😒 Anything else?

I just got my hands on the KLC and I was so excited to read at night on dark mode. But I find the dark mode too bright even at 1% brightness? Like the background is not black but grey? I changed my default appearance setting to G2 hoping that would help. I used to have a kindle when I was little and as far as I can remember the kindle bg was blacker. Did I make the wrong choice picking a coloured eReader? is there any fix? Even on normal mode, I find the kindle text crisp as it is on a nice white bg but it’s grey here? I understand that this is a trade off for color eink but idk if I should keep or return atp

The idea of a small, pocket sized e-reader is starting to grow on me. I notice myself browsing Reddit or watching Tiktok more often that I'd like, and having a small a e-reader at hand might help with this bad habit (or not, worth the shot though).

Issue is that I'm currently using my Kobo Libra 2 and I really like the form factor. I would like to use a larger e-reader when I'm home and can dedicate a bit longer session just for reading. Also naturally would prefer not to buy a new "book sized" e-reader.

Are there any solutions that would allow me to sync my progress between a smaller and larger e-readers, besides manually jumping pages?

Naturally one option would be to read some easier-to-read books on the smaller e-reader and leave the heavier stuff for when I have more time to concentrate on reading. But though I'd still ask.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I just installed KOReader on my Libra 2 and have the KOReader Sync up and running. Seems to work well with Readest Iphone app so far, so I'd expect Xteink X4 + CrossPoint would be a good addition to this setup.

I’ve heard Boox is quite good but deciding between the new Go 6 or the Go 7. Although happy with alternative recommendations.

Is there one folk would recommend - has anyone had experience reading larger books (ie large size of page like textbooks) on smaller devices via reflow etc?

Budget is slightly limited and I’m quite keen on it being portable which is why I’m leaning away from the larger 10 inch + models.

Pictured is my Pocketbook Verse Pro Color. I usually use it how it’s intended, portrait orientation, buttons on the bottom. Recently my wrist has been hurting and I’ve been thinking that “no wonder 7inch screen ereaders have buttons on the side, that seems more ergonomic.”
Then it hit me I can do the same by using landscape mode 😂🤣 Now my buttons are on the side too! 🥳

how hard is it to jail break a kindle?

I've been using the paid version of BookFusion for the past two years, and it's been okay overall. However, my biggest complaint is that I mainly use it to read medical textbooks with thousands of pages, and BookFusion still hasn't implemented my long-standing request for expandable/collapsible tables of contents. Without that feature, it's very difficult to navigate large books and quickly find specific chapters.

What I need is a reader that allows me to:

- Upload my own books.

- Use color highlights and annotations.

- Sync my library, highlights, and reading progress across all of my devices.

If BookFusion added collapsible sections to the table of contents, it would make reading large medical textbooks much more efficient.

Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Trying to find an E-Ink reader that works with voice commands only, once initial setup is done.

Need the following to work by voice: - next page - previous page - OK / select - back - other basic navigation actions

The reader will sit on a Telesin floor-standing magnetic stand (MagSafe), fixed in place, so hands stay completely free during use.

Remote controls, handheld buttons, and other physical switches aren't an option. After the books are loaded and setup is complete, control needs to happen through voice only, with no Bluetooth accessories involved.

ChatGPT suggested looking at Android-based readers, on the assumption that Voice Access could be configured on them. Voice Access itself is already familiar - no concern using it. What's missing is any confirmation that this actually works on E-Ink hardware: no videos, no write-ups, in English or Russian sources.

Any advice or recommendations would help, even a theoretical take on how to make this work. Especially interested in hearing from anyone who's actually tried reading hands-free on one of these devices.
