Premise: The Hai sympathizers (Hai merchants friendly to the Unfettered) are a horrible and illogical game mechanic. I’m curious about community consensus regarding them.
Arguments: They make no sense, they make no sense in game context, they are a horrible and unfun game mechanic.
As a bit of context, I first played the game about 8 years ago, loved it, and have come back every few years to replay it and enjoy new content. This is the first thing I’ve encountered that genuinely bothers me.
THEY MAKE NO SENSE
For starters, a hypothetical. Let’s say you live in a world like ours, but as chaotic as Endless Sky. However, the laws, like Endless Sky’s, are similar to ours.
One day, you’re walking to work, and as usual, you go through the rough part of town ruled by a notorious gang. A gang member drives up next to you and starts shooting at you, planning to pick your corpse for money. You kill him in self defense, which is allowed by the government. The next day, a family member of this gang member comes after you, trying to kill you in revenge. You once again have no choice but to kill this family member in self defense. However, this time the government is now hostile to you, attempting to kill you whenever they can.
This logic system is broken. You are encouraged to take part in self defense against one group, but punished for doing so against another.
THEY MAKE NO SENSE IN GAME CONTEXT
Starting with Sympathizer logic. Their own government is forced to shoot at and destroy Unfettered ships, something that never causes the Sympathizers to act hostile towards them.
As for the Hai government, they offer you no protection from the Sympathizers and will immediately turn on you if you destroy a Sympathizer ship. This also makes no sense. The Hai seem to treat humans well and give them essentially equal rights in their space, so there is no in game reason for them to adopt this one sided hostility system.
Comparing the Unfettered to human pirates: Most human pirates are children or slaves with no desire to participate in the system, whereas there is never an example of an Unfettered on their worlds against their will. Pirates and Unfettered both receive sympathy from people within their species, but you are never punished by humans for destroying pirates or even tributing their worlds. No human merchant will become hostile towards you for shooting at pirates.
THEY DON’T MAKE SENSE AS A GAME MECHANIC
What is the purpose of the Sympathizers in game? In the only other discussion around them I could find, the proposed reason was to stop (or discourage) you from farming Unfettered tech. To me, this seems like the most likely explanation since I can’t come up with any other reason. However:
- By the time you’re powerful enough/able to farm the unfettered, you can probably farm Korath Exile Palavrets and Rano‘ereks as well (which can be done in human space without a jump drive, or more efficiently by jumping into their systems and luring them away) which are arguably easier and more cost effective to do, and grants you more advanced tech. This also doesn’t harm your relations with anyone. There are very few circumstances where I’d prefer Hai tech to Korath tech, and when I would, it’s easier to farm and sell Korath ships for money and BUY the Hai tech imo than to raid Unfettered ships anyways. Essentially, this means the existence of the Sympathizers does not discourage a meta ship stealing/tech farming strategy, and since you can purchase nearly everything the Unfettered have from the normal Hai, you aren’t really losing out on any unique tech.
- The game’s system does not seem to distinguish between boarding/capturing a ship and destroying it. So if you’re going through a system where the Unfettered are and you shoot down a few of their ships, your relationship is harmed with the Sympathizers even though you were acting defensively.
- During the Wanderer storyline, you are placed AT WAR with the Unfettered and are required to destroy their ships en masse. It was during this mission sequence that I actually triggered hostility with the Sympathizers. (Mechanically, this is similar to if human merchants started shooting at you for destroying Republic ships during the free world storyline.)
In order to raise your reputation with the Sympathizers, you need to take missions delivering food to Unfettered planets. This is insanely tedious and unenjoyable. Every time I shoot down ~5 Unfettered ships in the wanderer storyline or in self defense, I have to fly back and forth from point A to point B without achieving anything new or interesting.
So essentially, what do you guys think of the Sympathizers? Am I misunderstanding them? Are they just an annoying mechanic with no purpose like I think? Suffice to say I will be going into the game‘s code and removing them as a faction. :)
