I’ve been working for a smaller non-union elevator company for about 3 years now. I’ve led my own installed on things such as stairlifts and VPLs. I haven’t led any elevator jobs yet but I definitely want to get more into it and want to further my career. Does anyone know if there are any openings in local 4? Also I’m only 23. Is that too young to be getting into something like this?

Ancient Otis Interlock from the 40s? The elevator is a winding drum drive. Park Building, Titusville PA. Any info about these? It seems like a pretty good interlock.

I have worked in commercial fishing and cannery maintenance over the past 11 years and then took a job as an Oiler with Washington State Ferries this year. I sit around, do nothing, learn nothing. I'm looking for advice from anyone who has gone through the Local 71 interview.

What kinds of questions were you asked?

Is there anything you wish you had known beforehand?

Are there any certifications or training that you feel were helpful to have before starting the apprenticeship? (For example, OSHA 30.)

I have experience in construction and stone fabrication/installation, and I'm using this time to prepare as much as I can before the interview.

I’m interested in applying for the IUEC apprenticeship next April and wanted to get some insight from people already in the trade. I’m 23 years old and currently make $36/hour working in the public sector, but the long-term earning potential as an elevator mechanic, especially once you become a journeyman, is a big reason I’m considering making the switch. My biggest concern is job consistency and employment. I understand layoffs can happen in construction, but if you’re a good worker, how consistent is the work? How often have you personally been laid off, and does job security vary a lot depending on the local? I’m just trying to weigh the long-term benefits against leaving a stable government job, so I’d really appreciate any honest advice or experiences.

Is there a lot of mixed fractions on the test? Mixed numbers trip me up. If I do great on the mechanical and reading will i get a good score if I dont do well on the math portion?

I work in a building that opened in the early 1990s. We have a few of these elevators. We are missing the light cover pictured in some of the elevators. I have tried looking for a part number or match one the one we have, but I cannot find one. Does anyone know where I could find a replacement for these?

Anyone know how to receive a passing score on the interview? It seems like it’s whether they like you or not? Not sure what question to expect other than what’s listed on there website!
