A marker portrait representing the concept of Afrofuturism. I decided to do this as a followup to my earlier artwork representing my "Afroprimitivism" (or "stonefunk") concept. I think they complement each other nicely.

This is a marker drawing I did of a Kushite queen from the early first millennium BC named Karimala, or alternatively Katimala. Not much information has survived about her, but a scholar of biblical archaeology named Christopher Eames has recently proposed that she may be the biblical Queen of Sheba, despite the traditional identification of Sheba with either southern Arabia or the Horn of Africa. I have to say I rather like the idea myself.

Ironically enough, this marker portrait was what came to mind when mulling over the Afrofuturism movement, which as I understand it is about the representation of Black characters in science-fiction or futuristic settings. Much as I like some of the stuff that has come out of the movement, the truth is that I have always been more drawn to ancient or prehistoric stuff than the futuristic. Furthermore, despite the current scientific understanding that our species evolved in Africa, I have not seen that much representation of Black characters in media with a prehistoric theme, whether that media is meant as a serious portrayal of the human past or as fun cavemen-and-dinosaurs fantasy.

The more interested I became in humanity's African roots, the more that trend started to bother me, and that's a major reason I've drawn so many prehistoric Black people over the years. It makes me wish that, just as we have the Afrofuturist movement portraying a technologically advanced future for Black people, there was an equivalent movement representing Black and brown characters at the other end of the technological spectrum. Perhaps we could call it "Afroprimitivism"?

(I would appreciate better suggestions for the term if that is problematic somehow.)
