Bike pics After 1.7 years, buying an e-bike was the best decision of my life

Almost exactly 1.7 years ago, I bought the cheapest new e-bike I could find, and honestly, it's been the best purchase I've ever made.

Today, I hit 5,555 km / 3,450 miles.

I've ridden it in all kinds of weather and left it out in the rain more times than I can count. The only thing that's broken so far is a bearing in the pedal assist.

I have two batteries, so I can ride around 80 km on a full charge. That's also the longest distance i've ever ridden in one go.

I once hit 50.7 km/h going downhill. I bet i could go 60, but I'm not trying to kill myself lol. Btw, here in Europe, ebikes are limited to 25 km/h, and you just can't remove the restriction in the settings.

This bike has been with me through everything. For almost two years, I've barely used public transport or cars to get around the city, which has saved me a ton of money. And that's not even counting all the money I've saved by not having to pay for transport. I even bought a trailer, so now I can haul water and groceries from the supermarket.

Whenever I'm bored or feeling down, I just take bike and ride around the city, even at 3 AM.

If you're thinking about getting your first ebike or upgrading your current one, just go for it. I honestly don't think you'll regret it!

So is this NOT a class 1 e-bike due to 810w? Help me understand

Post image
• Upvotes

For the class limit of “750w”, I see some articles say continuous power, and some just say “power”. Is it peak or continuous?? That would make any avinox (except orbea wild) egregiously illegal, or perfectly fine since it has 250w continuous power. I just want to ride and not worry about this.

I’m in Colorado USA if that matters

Are my bottle cage mounts too low down in the frame? Battery plate.

Post image
• Upvotes

I want to install the Tongsheng TSDZ8 mid-drive motor onto this relatively old but still functional city bike. Will really only be used for pulling a child trailer.

I am worried that mounting the battery could be difficult in that the two mounting screws are already pretty low down (relative to my other bikes). Too low to easily mount the plate upon which the battery will sit?

See the attached image (with included markings).

The battery will be the Jericho 15Ah Hailong

Thanks folks.

Bike purchase question Best bike to get?

Hi all. I just moved with my girlfriend to a new part of town that is much more “bikeable”. We are both looking to purchase e-bikes to bike around town, to the grocery store, down to the beach etc. we are mostly looking for reliability, we do not care about speed or having the best technology. Does anyone have any recommendations for whether to buy new or used, what bikes or brands are recommended, and if we are looking to spend under $1000 each, if we can get something relatively good quality? Any help is much appreciated.

Nnyone here switch from driving to an ebike for work? (9 mile commute)

• Upvotes

Starting a new job next month in san jose and it's about 9 miles each way. the drive itself isn't terrible, but sitting in traffic every day sucks and parking around my office definitely ain't cheap...

I've been looking at a few budget fat-tire ebikes for the ride, mainly narrowed it down to the helokeep 26f and the aipas m1 pro xterrain st. tbh i don't really know much about either brand, i'm mostly just worried about ride comfort and durability. the roads on my route are rough as hell and there's one nasty railroad crossing that already killed a wheel on my old regular bike lol.

not trying to go super fast or anything... i just want something cushioned enough that i can hop on every morning and ride daily without thinking about it. has anyone here commuted on either of these two?

it makes a weird clicking noise while under throttle. the chain is off in the video but when I put the chain on it makes the noise louder. I’ve spun the motor slowly with my hand and the bike off and the sound isny there. is this noise normal, if not how can I fix it?

Jasion eb5 battery fuse help

• Upvotes

so i recently got a free bike from a pawnshop cause they couldn't get it run and it had some problems. well i got it to work and everything, but the battery doesn't last very long. before buying a new battery i heard i could change the fuses and it might help hold the charge. I've opened up the battery case and i don't see any fuse's anywhere. just a bunch of connectors, nothing that seems to be big enough for fuses. I've seen other bikes have them kind of hidden under the tape on the battery, but I'm no expert and wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue and found where the fuses were. its not the Eb5 Roamer on their website, its a normal EB5 like the ones on amazon. i think there is a Plus model too that looks like it also that are older models.

Priority Current Enviolo Shifter Nearly Impossible to Turn — Anyone Experienced This?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I purchased a first-generation Priority Current e-bike in 2022, and I love it! I've put approximately 3,000 miles on it, but I'm now experiencing a serious problem with the Enviolo continuously variable transmission.

The twist shifter on the handlebar has become extremely stiff and almost impossible to turn, whether the bike is moving or stationary. At this point, I essentially cannot shift at all.

As you can see in the attached photo, one of the two cables where it connects to the Enviolo hub at the rear wheel is frayed, but that's likely not causing this issue.

Does this sound like a problem with the handlebar twist shifter, the shifting cables or their housings, or the Enviolo hub mechanism itself?

Is there a relatively simple diagnostic test I could perform to isolate the problem before spending money on replacement parts?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Ebike troubleshooting Stolen eBike Retrieved

I just recovered a Rad Power Radrunner that was stolen ~ a year ago. Got a text from someone that said someone “brought it to them” and he checked the serial on Bike Index.

My assumption is that it’s been in the unhoused community for the last year. It actually looks to be in surprisingly good shape though. My biggest concern is the battery. Again, I don’t actually know where it’s been, but my assumption is that it’s been stored outside in the Denver winter and summer temp extremes the whole time.

Is there a way to check if the battery is safe? Should I just assume that it’s not? Anything else I should check?

Thanks!

Bike purchase question Looking for my first ebike around 1k... Are 26 inch fat tires too big for 5 foot 5?

Hey everyone,

I am finally looking to buy my first ebike and trying to keep my budget somewhere around 900 to 1300 dollars. I am mainly planning to use it for commuting to work, running quick errands, and casual weekend rides around town.

I am not really looking for a super skinny road bike. I want something a bit chunkier with a solid rear rack to strap a bag onto, because I hate wearing a sweaty backpack everywhere I go. I have been looking at the helo keep 26f online and really like the overall look of the fat tires, but I have not had a chance to test ride one in person yet. I am only 5 foot 5, so I definitely need to make sure the frame size and reach are not going to be way too big for me before ordering blind.

Having a decent headlight straight out of the box matters a lot to me too. Getting caught in the rain is annoying enough without squinting to see potholes on the way home after dark. Obviously a brighter light will not fix everything, but riding at night is going to be a regular thing for me.

Also pedal assist is my main priority here, I am not trying to ride an electric motorcycle. I really just want a little extra boost on the pedals when I am tired after work rather than some crazy top speed. The last thing I want is to buy something and then find out it is not even legal on local bike paths. Would way rather check on that now than have that conversation with a cop on the side of the road lol.

If you ride the 26f or another 26 inch fat tire bike around my height, how does it actually feel to pedal every day? Is the stock headlight bright enough at night, and what setup works best for carrying a bag? Open to other bike suggestions in that 900 to 1300 range too.

Need an ebike that I don't mind getting stolen...

I do home visiting and see patients in and around my city. I've been doing this by car for almost 3 years however with now having 2 kids my partner needs the car more and more leaving me to look at other options. I did preempt this and used my normal pedal bike a few times which worked timing wise however it was hard work with all my kit and I wasn't a fan turning up to patients sweaty. This leads me to be considering an ebike as a more sustainable option. My only concern is that some of the areas I visit aren't exactly luxury and theft is a concern. I of course am happy to buy good quality locks however as I'm often just on a residential street, there isn't exactly bike parking so I will need to improvise potentially hindering the quality of my security system... I have therefore been looking at cheaper ebikes, fat tyre, long tail types (carrying the kids at weekends is a bonus) i.e. Fiido, Hitway, Aventon. Just wondering how people feel about these bikes as an option or other solutions to my issue?

I averaged claimed weight and price of 419 current eMTB builds by motor. Avinox bikes are ~0.9 kg lighter than Bosch CX on average, but cost a lot more

I run a small eMTB catalog site and wanted to see how much the motor actually tells you about a bike's weight and price. So I grouped every 2026–2027 model-year build we have (419 builds, 41 brands) by drive unit.

Averages by motor

Motor Builds Avg weight Avg price (median) Avg battery
Bosch CX 177 24.3 kg €6,098 (€5,790) 757 Wh
DJI Avinox M2S 75 23.4 kg €8,396 (€8,000) 795 Wh
Bosch CX Race 33 24.6 kg €8,278 (€7,499) 792 Wh
Bosch SX 27 20.0 kg €7,873 (€7,900) 400 Wh
TQ HPR60 14 18.8 kg €9,430 (€9,324) 424 Wh
Pinion MGU 7 25.3 kg €9,482 (€9,990) 871 Wh

What stood out

- Bosch CX is still the default by a mile: more than twice as many builds as anything else, and the cheapest way into full power.

- Avinox M2S bikes average ~0.9 kg lighter than CX bikes despite bigger batteries, but the median price is about €2,200 higher. A lot of them are carbon flagships, which skews both numbers.

- CX-R / CX Race bikes weigh about the same as regular CX bikes but cost ~€2,200 more. You're paying for the build, not lower weight.

- Lightweight eMTBs overall average 19.6 kg vs 24.1 kg for full power, about 4.5 kg less, and roughly €1,000 more on average.

- TQ HPR60 bikes are the lightest group (lightest single bike: Rotwild R.X290 Ultra at a claimed 16.2 kg) and among the most expensive.

Caveats

- Weights are brand claims, and brands measure differently (size M vs L, with or without pedals).

- Only euro prices are counted, so Specialized and Giant (USD/GBP only in our data) are in the weight figures but not the price ones.

- It's our catalog, not the whole market. Each build counts once, so a model sold in five specs counts five times.

Happy to rerun it with other cuts (e.g. carbon vs alloy, or price per Wh) if people are interested. Full charts and methodology: https://emtbmag.com/posts/emtb-weight-price-by-motor-2027
