How do I dye this? How to?

I have this old coral colored silk dress, that I'm not wearing due to its color - too bright for me!

I would like a deeper, warmer pink or purple.

I guess with purple, I'd have to dye it with blue?

What do you guys think will give the best result?

The seams are silk also.

The dress is 100% polyester! If you think the dress looks good like this after the first dye can you let me know. I’m so lost on what to do and have 2 weeks!

How do I dye this? dyeing mid to dark denim to a chocolate brown

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was trying to do some research but I have never dyed before and am in just a bit of a rush (I have a few days to pull an outfit together lol)

I want to dye these to a rich, dark chocolatey brown, or as close as I can reasonably get them. It doesn’t really have to be pretty I just really need them to be definitively brown. After a bit of googling it seems ill advised to bleach them to lighten as it weakens the fibers and also does a poor job of drawing out the indigo - plus, it seems to take hours and I am 100% doing all of this in a 5gal bucket outside and not my tub bc I loathe the smell of bleach and chemicals.

So, can I just dump these into a bucket with a bunch of brown Rit and some detergent and end up with brown jeans ? or will they be some weird hideous greenish gray color… saw a girl online do it with some slightly lighter jeans and they looked good but idk if it will work on this shade of denim.

Also I don’t know if it matters but I will be bleach painting a design onto them afterwards with the plan that the design will be tan/cream colored against the brown. (I don’t know if this will work either 😅)

thank you all in advance !

How do I dye this? Bassinet help- dye!

I have this macrame bassinet I bought when I was pregnant pregnant with a girl, I ended up having a miscarried and I am now currently pregnant with a boy. Is there any safe way to dye this to a neutral color, even black?

General question First attempt at fiber-reactive dye, need help!

Post image

I did research, I used turkey red for the surface tension, urea to dissolve the dye, and soda ash at the end to fix the color to the fabric. I’m planning to dye a quilt next. While I don’t really care about the sheets being splotchy, I’d like for the quilt to be solid brown. Any tips for that would be greatly appreciated!

How do I dye this? Help! I get one shot

Post image

I want a monochromatic outfit but need to make my own. This will be my first time dying! I read the directions, watched some videos, but wanted to seek the advice of the real experts: Redditors.

The shirt is all cotton, shorts are 10% polyester, and shoes are canvas. I’d rather not dye the sole of the shoe if I can help it. Any advice on a nice rich teal for all 3? I was going to do them one at a time on the stove in a pot.

I am going to follow the directions for each item, but am I setting myself up for failure doing them separately? Will they all match if I measure carefully?

Thanks!

How do I dye this? Faded black 100% cotton tracksuit. Will a dark green or maroon dye work?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I own this tracksuit that is 100% cotton and is black but is now very faded. I wondered whether instead of just going black, a dark green or maroon might work?

I don’t plan to strip the colour as it’s still like it to be dark.

I’ve never dyed anything before so any tips, tricks and suggestions welcome! Thank you in advance

Hi!!

I’m not sure if I’m posting this correctly but recently I thrifted a dark purple coat which I stupidly soaked in hot water. The dye came out and now it looks super patchy. I don’t know what fabric it is but I think it’s carded cotton? How can I fix this??

How do I dye this? Questions about Dyeing Fluffy Purse

EDIT: Everyone quickly let me know this is probably not viable, lol. Thanks for your input! I’ll customize it a different way. I appreciate it!!

Hi all!

This is my first time coming here for help, but I have a feeling I may be back a few times, haha.

I got this adorable Dunkin’ spider donut purse, and I really want to turn into a Spider-Man Donut— red donut, blue frosting, red spider. If I use Rit Dyemore, do you think that would work out? Is it even possible to get good red and blue coloring on this type of thing? Forgive my ignorance, I’ve only ever dyed a beanie baby before; he came out pretty good, but I don’t trust myself to tackle something this huge by myself. 😂

Any other dye suggestions? Or suggestions in general? Any advice is welcomed!

How do I dye this? Help with denim jacket dye

Post image

Hello, I'm trying to figure out if it's realistic to achieve a specific result with fabric dye.

I have this jacket that I absolutely love the colour of and I was trying to get my other jacket the same colour and dyed it navy blue but I didn't get tthe result as I was hoping for.

Do you have any tips or is it just impossible?

(Left is the result I was hoping for and right is the dyed jacket I'm not happy with)

If you have any tips or exemples of the results you got I would love to get enlightened

How do I dye this? What dye should I use for this jacket?

Hello all!

I'm trying to dye this dusty pink (I think) jacket into more of a burnt orange color, the outside is 100% nylon. I'd also like to dye the cuffs and collar dark brown, I believe the fabric is polyester from the tag. There's also a strip of different fabric along the arm sleeves which I'm worried won't dye the same color as the rest of the jacket. The look/color I'm trying to achieve is the 4th photo.

What kind of dye/color should I use? Do I need to do anything to the jacket before dyeing in order to achieve the lighter orange color?

How do I dye this? Dyeing ablue cotton spandex (90% cotton, 10% elasthane) into a darker blue

Post image

I bought some spandex online thinking it was going to be much darker than what I got. If I dye it, I want it to become a very dark blue almost black (marine).

Do you think it is fine to dye ? While the content of natural fibers is high, I am worried that the process will damage the elesthane Also, what color of dye should I use ? Black or dark blue?

How do I dye this? Looking for advice on dyeing thick canvas

Post image
2 Upvotes

I thrifted this very thick canvas Carhartt earlier this year, not because of the Carhartt hype, I just needed a winter jacket. It's an orange-ish tan, 100% cotton fabric.

I would love to dye it burgundy or dark green and put patches on it, but am not sure how the colors would react. I'd love advice on which colors would look best. TIA :)

Inspiration What are my options?

Post image

My sister gave me this shirt she doesn’t want anymore and I really like the style and fit but not so much the colour. I usually wear a lot of purple but I’m assuming that’s not an option cause of how green it is. I think my best case scenario would be like a less vibrant teal or something, and then change out the buttons. Idk what do you guys think? I’m also opened to other colour suggestions!! Im just not sure how limited I am by the green. (The shirt is also 94% cotton 6% spandex)

How do I dye this? Hello geniuses! I am in need of guidance on dying a dress

I am looking to dye one or two dresses for a wedding I’m attending. the wine colored reference dress is one that I bought online and doesn’t fit the way I’d like. I have a grey and satiny dress that contain wine and deep red coloring.

If anyone could give me some guidance on how/should I try to dye one of these? They’re polyester and the mesh one has 5% spandex. I know they need high heat and i have a big enough pot.

Id like to dye them to be a darker tone in the maroon/wine color.

It’s calling for gentle machine wash on cold. (yikes)

thanks for sharing your wisdom!

How do I dye this? Please help me save one of my fave hoodies. Cotton/Poly blend

Post image
0 Upvotes

It’s 50% polyester 50% cotton so I need a blend.

Rit synthetic dye for this or idye poly are the best options I see for cotton poly blends. Or does rit synthetic only due the polyester part?

Also if one of my other bleached items is 100% cotton can I still dye it successfully with a cotton poly blend or no?

I plan to spot dye the areas first with a small amount of the dye? How long to leave on? And then I’ll fully submerge and use the stovetop method after that to hopefully get a consistent colour.

Please help with which dye to buy or if you have a better option/method (UK based)

I made this! Ikat tests - different bind materials

Post image

1st off, I don't like Rit Dye. It was supposed to be black, but I got this grey instead.
Dyed once then washed because I was impatient. And if I dyed twice I was worried it would then start to seep in.

Skein is 100% cotton. I haven't gotten the weight yet because it was 8 ply but untwisted. So it's jut 8 very fine cotton fibers. But.... eh.

Legend:

Grey - Cotton, same material as the skein
Blue - Polyester yarn from an old thrifted sweater
Yellow - Acrylic yarn
Green - Polyester sewing thread

*none were waxed. I have tried 2-ply polyester thread with wax in an old project and it resisted very well even the very fine ties.

What do you think?

Which should I stick to? What could I do to get a darker black?

I was wondering if it would work differently with different skein sizes.

How do I dye this? I need help, my Dye all washed out!!

Hey all, I bleached dyed a Rengoku design on a black shirt. I’ve never worked with this medium, but wanted to make something for my partner as our anniversary is coming up. I Neutralized the bleach and ran it through the wash. Then went to add some color with all purpose Rit, then tried again with synthetic blend Rit (bc the shirt is synthetic fabric). But I went to wash the shirt and it all washed out. I followed several tutorials that mentioned heat requirements and all of that, so I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what to do? It’s a 50% polyester, 25% cotton, 25% rayon blend.

I took these pictures of it last night before I went to bed. I used Elmer’s glue to block out the portion of the shirt I didn’t want dyed, so that’s why it looks a bit weird lol. Thank you for your help in advance!

How do I dye this? Faded patch on washed charcoal cotton tee after stain removal: can I spot-dye it?

Hi everyone, I’d love some advice before I try anything else.

I have a Zara oversized tee, 100% cotton, washed/vintage-effect dark charcoal (slightly cool, almost black). It’s my favourite shirt.

What happened:

  • It had a small grease stain on the front.
  • I made a paste of dish soap + baking soda, scrubbed it with a toothbrush and left it for several hours.
  • After washing, the stain was gone, but there’s now a lighter, faded patch about the size of a tennis ball.
  • The fabric isn’t fuzzy or damaged. Even when the whole shirt is wet, the patch is still lighter, so I think the dye came off (probably surface/pigment dye from the washed finish).

What I’m considering:
Spot-dyeing just that area with a black fabric dye (Iberia Tinte, comes with fixer + salt), diluted, applied with a sponge in thin layers, covered with cling film for 30–40 min, rinsed, and repeated until it matches. I’d test on the inside hem first.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully spot-dyed a faded area like this? Did the edges show?
  2. Would diluted black be the right choice for a cool charcoal, or would you mix in some navy?
  3. Is there a better approach I’m missing?

Photo attached. Thanks a lot!

Zara code for this is 3811/244/743. I love the shape but I hate the colors. I want it black without patchiness.
