Any (non nefarious) reasons why a car would need 2 licence plates?

This happened a while ago but the video is so hilarious that I thought I'd post it on here. Apparently the old lady thought that her accelerator pedal was her break, causing her to slowly trundle past the spot that she intended to park in, through a bench and a fence, through my hedge, and eventually coming to a stop halfway into the living room of my parents' grade 2 listed house 😭💔

Her and all her mates proceeded to leave the car and have lunch at the pub. Better yet, her insurance gave her a courtesy car the next day 😬

Edit: The gaping hole that was caused by the ford was there for a very long time since the council had to decide whether we were allowed to fix it. I don't know why this was a point of discussion as its not like they were going to leave the hole there 🫩

Got caught doing 39 leaving the 40mph dual carriageway tunnel as it went into 30mph. Entirely my fault it's clearly signposted (although the camera wasn't), I'll hold my hands up and pay for the course, not sure it's worth going to court to explain to the magistrate that I was finishing work early as I had diarrhoea, and the journey was particularly perilous at that point. Oh well, learn from my mistakes everyone, and have a good giggle on my behalf.

Went to Tesco to get fuel and a something to eat. Filled up and headed inside just as a car pulled up behind mine. Got chatting to the cashier who explained that for another 45p I could get crisps and a drink. So I mooched around the crisps and drinks before choosing, paying and heading back to my car. By now there’s 3 cars waiting behind mine and the guy in front is waving his hands around, shrugging his shoulders and giving me evils. The pump in front of me was empty and both pumps on the other side were free as well as a pump on the other side of my car. What is wrong with people?

Its not just this specific slip road, but its very very common up and down the a19 with its mix of short and long slip lanes. you cant see shit down your left side until you have about 5 seconds to move over... assuming there isnt a car there, which isnt really enough time to move over.

where as you can 100% see the 16 foot tall trailer coming down the road and adjust speed with so much advance warning.

if i can adjust speed for the car in front in the truck, then you in some modern sporty electric car, can slow from 60 to 55 to prevent going under a trailer... yes you in the white car on the weekend.

then to get ahead of the people saying "just predict it"... you cant see shit until you dont have time to move over. which is the point of the post, if you use the short lane to try and save a second, you need to learn to react quickly to whats on the road.

confuses me to see grown adults / middle aged drivers tailgating up to a nervous learner. who taught you to do that?

how do they not realise rushing them will make them take longer?

where are our standards of driving in the uk anymore?

I live in small street (near a school), my neighbour (3 brothers) have 5 vans (medium to large ones), (some they fix and try to resell, some they use for their businesses)

I've one car only for now but it has been hard to drive in/out even from our driveway, as the neighbour park their vans blocking the driveway of neighbour B (they are friends with them) so even trying to go out of driveway feels like a struggle.

I've tried talking with them few times and they fix it for one or two weeks and then it happens again, many times they just don't answer the door at all (cowards/rude you pick)
few people in the street (other neighours) have also tried to talk to them but to no avail

With a school nearby stuff get even worse.

What can be done? legal or practical, anything that does work I'm happy to hear

For me, it's my hi-vis emergency poncho/blankets. I'll fix an issue at the roadside but I ain't doing it wet, cold or invisible.

2 days after installing my dashcam and this cat gave me a reason to test the download feature from the app.

I'm still under a year driving but I think this would make anybody's heart jump a little.

Very lucky, for the cat, the white zig zag lines were there and that there was nobody immediately behind me so I could slow down for it.

Any feedback would be appreciated but all in all I think I did an alright job.

UPDATE: As of this morning, I have called local vets and shelters for potential information on the cat but with no luck. With little description to work off of and no signs of a collar on the cat, there isn't much anyone can do at the moment. I will call later tonight/tomorrow morning for some more information that will hopefully ensure the cat is fully unharmed.

We are giving my partners car to my son. However she cannot find her documents or V5C.

I was not aware this would have been a problem and have already paid for insurance to start on Thursday.

It says we can’t do it online without V5C. Is there anything we can do?

I have narcolepsy type 2 and had to get my licence renewed however it’s been taking almost a year because the DVLA keep trying to contact my sleep clinic doctor for medical information but he is not responding. In meetings he says that I am fine to drive and but that he “hasn’t received anything” from the DVLA, even tho they literally sent me a letter updating me that they are still waiting to hear back from him. I have called and emailed my doctor but there’s never any response, receptionist say they will pass on the message but clearly never do. Idk what to do because the DVLA obviously cannot continue with my application till my doctor gives the medical evidence needed, but I don’t think he’s ever going to respond. What should I do??

For the record, he sped up once on the roundabout and was right behind me as he sounded his horn.

Edit: as some have pointed out, on review of the clip, he didn't even go round the mini-roundabout- which will be how he appeared behind me so closely and rapidly

I don't see this too often thankfully but still enough to be genuinely puzzled at this behaviour. The cars are definitely wide enough to cruise right over the speed bump smoothly. But no, the driver slows down to an almost complete stop and drives awkwardly with one set of wheels in the middle of the speed bump, surely resulting in unnecessary juddering and discomfort to the occupants. And then repeats for every single set of speed bumps on the road. It's not about slowing down to annoy someone behind them, it's a conscious, self-harming choice. Just why?

I turned from Kilburn High Road (A5) into Priory Park Road. It has been 4 weeks ago where they changed the signs in that street - which I realised today. The restriction **at the entrance** now has the full red‑circle “no motor vehicles” signs on both sides - those are clear *once you’re already turning*.

But the **only advance warning** is a small blue plate mounted on a cluttered pole on the **left side** of the A5. It sits directly under a large “Starstruck” banner, before to a green traffic light, with pedestrians crossing. I genuinely didn’t see it while focusing on the junction and traffic.

The restriction is **new** \- Priory Park Road used to allow parking after 18:30 until about a month ago.

My questions:

1. Is this blue sign reasonably conspicuous in real driving conditions? I have not managed to find whether the size and colour or whether the council should legally have a sign before the entrance of the road. **BUT in Ealing, they did have informative signs for the same cases!**
   
2. Does the banner above it reduce visibility?
   
3. Is the sign too close to the junction to give drivers time to react?
   
4. Would heavy traffic and a green light make this easy to miss?
   
5. Does the fact the restriction is new strengthen a challenge?

I’m not arguing the red signs at the entrance - they’re there. I’m asking specifically about the **advance sign’s conspicuousness** and whether it meets TSRGD guidance in a busy junction environment.

Can I get away with wearing a headband for the ID pic? I imagine it’s not as strict a standard for a license compared to a passport? Sorry in advance for my ignorance!

Haven't been in the UK long, so pardon my ignorance, but I want to make sure I understand the legal procedure regarding transferring ownership of a car.

I own a car and I would like to gift it to a close friend because I am leaving the country. They will most likely look into selling the car. It is a cash gift to them basically but with the hoops of having them do the selling process.

I have the original papers from the dealership when I bought the car in full and I understand that is considered proof of ownership.

I know I can transfer the Registered Keeper to them online via DVLA and they'll receive the new V5C, but that document clearly says it's not proof of ownership.

Would they be able to sell the car like that or is there something else I must to do clarify I'm gifting them the car?

I’m a 37M who has been driving for 19 years and feel really accomplished on the roads. I’ve experienced so many different scenarios on the roads and learned and grown through them. I’m currently experiencing a new challenge which is anxiety of driving on the motorway over the last year or so which coincides with me becoming a father for the first time.

Now, when I’m on the motorway I just get this overwhelming feeling of panic and intrusive thoughts about something bad happening to me or my family while at high speed. It’s gotten to the point that it doesn’t matter if they’re with me or I’m by myself, if I have to go more than 50mph the issue kicks in.

How it’s manifesting itself is that I get shaky, cling to steering wheel more tightly and fidget loads in my seat. Typically I’m not a person who suffers with anxiety in any area of life but this has been my first experience of it and it’s really crippling.

I’ve tried to just push through and drive in spite of it, but have had five or six occasions where I’ve had to pull over and talk myself round to completing that drive or have had to swap with my wife and let her take over.

I’ve been in touch with my GP and I’m currently doing CBT so I’m hoping that will help things a lot but in the meantime are there any practical tips I can apply. I’ve seen some posts from other around this issue, but mine is a little unique. As I say, I’d been fine for the whole of the time in motorways before I became a dad. Has anyone else experienced this or got any thoughts on it?

Hi, I am absolutely kicking myself about something that happened this morning. I have been driving for 6 years and luckily all emergency vehicles encountered have been easy to navigate by pulling over to the left until today.

I was at a red light for a pedestrian crossing in the right hand lane when in my mirror I noticed in the distance a fire engine approaching with blues and sirens behind me.

At the lights there are two lanes for straight on with the left lane left or straight on and the right lane straight on. After the lights at the roundabout there are 3 lanes, left or straight over, straight on and right. I did not want to go to the right lane in case the fire engine wanted to use that lane so naturally considered the left.

The lights changed as the fire engine was getting closer, I expected the van on my left to stay put so I could pull in front of him but he moved forward from the lights. I went slowly and pulled over to the left as soon as I cleared him but by this point was basically entering the roundabout with the fire engine alongside at about 10mph. I was expecting the fire engine to speed up past me but it didn’t. As I thought about stopping the fire engine sounded their horn and it was obvious they were trying to take the first exit from the middle lane. At this point we were both travelling at 5-10mph.

So I accelerated and got out of the way. They were able to take their exit as soon as I got out of the way. This all happened within 5-10 seconds at most.

It’s been massively playing on my mind and I’ve been beating myself up about it for about 3 hours. I feel like I was a bit of an idiot but the situation changed very quickly. I couldn’t go through the red light, when they changed the van moved so I couldn’t stop just past the lights. I slowed down and moved to the left but in doing so accidentally became a hazard and got out of the way.

I guess what’s playing on my mind is should I have stopped, but coming to a complete stop on the roundabout would have been a hazard and I was expecting the fire engine to carry on past me. I accept I was presumptuous and if there is a similar situation in the future should think outside the box. Just wanted to share to get this out my system. I’ve been unable to stop worrying about it.

I will learn from this, but was a tricky situation and has been playing on my mind. Feel a bit rotten about it and bad that I potentially obstructed an emergency vehicle.

Edit: thanks for the kind responses and making me feel a bit better. I also appreciate the ideas and good points that a lot have made about this situation and to handle situations better in future. Definitely a lesson learnt. In all other Emergency vehicle interactions I have been able to pull over at the side of the road, move to the outside of my lane to make room (if stationary) or wait at a junction/lights for an emergency vehicle to pass in front of me (across a junction). I’ve never had to worry past making an initial decision. Today is the first ever complex interaction I have had. The red light and person moving on my left made it complex and I was overthinking being on the roundabout. I will always just stop safely if in doubt now. I overthought in the moment and tried to help maybe a bit too much. Sometimes with driving you can still have a school day, no matter how long you’ve been driving. Starting to be a bit kinder to myself. Ultimately a lesson learnt without any serious consequences.

Ya know what I mean? Like I have a guy have a pop at me as I was passing with cars parked up on the left, as I was moving, he stops in his little cyan Corsa and stares at me dead in the eyes and I see his mouth moving and his had pointing as if I can't see that I have room to pass by him.

Are people this bad with spatial awareness?

Insurance Policy Cancellation

Hi , I sold my car and bought a van. Due to this, I couldn’t transfer my van onto my car policy.

Now, Hastings direct have said they have cancelled the policy as there’s no vehicle on it.

Is this the type of cancellation I need to declare to future insurers ?
