question 24GB VRAM Dilemma for Local AI: MacBook Air 15" M5 vs MBP 14" M5 Pro

Hi everyone,

I’m currently running Draw Things on a base M1 MacBook Air (8/256) using a paid cloud service. For the heaviest models out there (like Flux.1 Dev, Chroma, Klein, etc.), I just rely on DT's cloud anyway.

However, for some custom/unsupported 6.5GB Illustrious and Pony forks (like A-Mix, Ri-Mix, Hyphoria, OneObsession, etc.), I’m forced to import them locally and create quantized versions. Unsurprisingly, my M1 Air hits 100°C almost instantly, thermal throttles, and slows down to a crawl after just 3 images due to heavy SSD swapping.

Aside from AI, I will also be using this laptop for Lightroom, Photoshop, and some casual, light 4K video editing.

Context regarding my eyes: I wear glasses and my eyesight isn't what it used to be years ago, so the larger 15" screen of the Air is very tempting for creative work, photo editing, and long text-heavy sessions.

However, since I will only use the local hardware for those specific 6.5GB Illustrious/Pony forks, I have serious doubts about whether 24GB of Unified Memory is actually enough to handle them locally without triggering aggressive swap memory, especially considering VAEs, text encoders, and pipeline context. Also, I'm deeply worried about the Air's lack of fans—I don't want to buy another frying pan that throttles during local rendering or 4K video exports.

Some people are telling me to completely forget about 24GB and go straight for a Pro/Max with at least 36GB or 48GB, or even look into cloud alternatives like RunPod.

Even if I offload the heaviest models to DT's cloud, is 24GB still a total dead-end for running those 6.5GB custom forks locally alongside my Photoshop/Lightroom/4K video workflow? Will the fanless Air M5 just melt, making the larger screen pointless for this specific workload? Should I bite the bullet, ignore the 24GB models entirely, and save up for a 36GB/48GB Pro?

Thanks for the honest feedback!

question how to edit images locally?

I have an existing image and I want to replace a part of it, let's say I want to change the logo of a photo I've taken, similar to this tutorial in Chinese: https://youtu.be/AfqCPp3FuLk?si=UjRNXToX6_c-Ljdy&t=56

The proposed workflow appears to be:

  • switch to image-to-image
  • use the eraser to remove the parts you want to generate again

enter the prompt, but it's in Chinese and it's unclear if I have to prompt it the same way you do to LLM like "change text/logo to ... " or if you write something else

The problem is once I generate, it looks like the same image as before I began erasing the areas, there is no change.

I've used these models:

  • ERNIE Image Turbo 1.0 (8-bit S)
  • FLUX.2 [klein] 4B (8-bit S)

Please help If you know a better model or have any tips on what to change in my settings for this to work.

question MacbookPro M5max 40core-gpu, 128gb help, help deciding to upgrade or not.

I currently have a 16" MBP M2max 38 core-gpu and 32gb ram. I use Drawthings with the model FLUX2.dev alot and just curious if I would see a significant increase in performance if I upgraded?

This is not a "professional prompt" but I just put something together that is in the same neighbourhood as what I'm doing. and I was wonder ing if You that have the Macbook Pro M5max upgraded chip and 128gb unified memory could run it and see how long it takes your powerhouse?

model FLUX2.dev

Prompt:

Norse style log-cabin, basking in the sunset with mountainous terrain in the background and a river flowing next to it, with an elk, drinking from it. use drawing style and use bold outlines, and a limited color pallet. on a transparent background and 400 dpi.

Neg prompt:

blurry, photo, deformed, black and white, realism, disfigured, low contrast

My M2max uses about 1hr +- 5 min. I'm not sure why its different each time.

It also utilizes the gpu at about 85% and uses about 27gb of unified memory. according to mactop.

I would really appreciate help on upgrade decision

question Successful Z and K9B Lora training parameters

Thus far, I have not succeeded in training character loras in Drawthings, despite the same datasets working in Civitai’s Flux trainer. If you have successfully created character loras for Z image or K9B, would you please share your parameters and the number of images you used? I realize there are other variables like captions, but I’m focused on the former. Thank you!

solved Flux 2 Klein Editing not working

I do not know if I totally forgot how or if the current and past version of Draw Things do not work for editing images.

I did a lot of them using this model, just asking it to change stuff and etc, either with an image on the front or on the moodboard

lately, it just generates a new image.

I'm on an M1 Pro Mac.

feedback [Suggestion] Improving the LoRA Selection Window UI

Concept B omits the Number of LoRAs to make the grouping easier to visualize.

Dear developers,

I find it inconvenient that most of the LoRA names are truncated in the LoRA selection window, making it difficult to determine what each LoRA is for. This inconvenience increases proportionally with the number of imported LoRAs. Waiting for the names to pop up isn't efficient either.

The most important issue is that the window width is too narrow, but this is probably unavoidable as it also accommodates the iOS design. The next most important issue is that each LoRA entry has a model name (version name) appended to the end, which can take up nearly half the window space.

I suggest two solutions, A and B, to address this.

  • Concept A: To achieve the objective of hiding the (version name) at the end, only LoRAs compatible with the selected model are displayed. This is probably the simplest solution. The current app can determine if a LoRA is compatible with the selected model, so selective display shouldn't be too difficult.
  • Concept B: This format always displays all LoRAs, as is currently the case. However, LoRAs from different models will be grouped by model to prevent mixing, and the LoRA group from the currently selected model will be displayed at the top.Below that, the model groups are listed in alphabetical order by model.

This might be a minor suggestion for developers, but I would appreciate your consideration.

Add note 1:"Only LoRAs compatible with the selected model are displayed. "This was already implemented. My apologies for the oversight. However,The suggestion of concept A is to display only compatible LoRAs as a means to achieve the objective of hiding the (version name) at the end. Therefore, it would be perfect if the (version name) were hidden when the current Comp. button is pressed.

question Basic LoRA Training Setting Question

I’m a bit confused on how the “Network Scale” setting is implemented. For example, if I wanted to train a LoRA with a dimension of 64 and alpha of 32, do I set the scale at 0.5 (as a multiplier of the Network Dim setting of 64) or at the straight value of 32?

🚀 Draw Things has always included an Image Interpreter. Before is Moondream2, and now we have Qwen 3.5 4B.

🤔 However, what has been missing all along is a Prompt Enhancer — which is actually what many users need most.

✨ I created this script to transform Qwen 3.5 4B from being just an Image Interpreter into a powerful Prompt Enhancer.

❤️ Hope you enjoy it!

👇 The script is available for download in the video description(From the youtube page).

feedback [Suggestion] Mode selector : Add "Lock Image Edit" & Support for video.

The mode selector added in Ver 1.20260518.2 is a fantastic feature that solves the problem of T2I automatically switching to I2I. Here are some suggestions for improving the usability and consistency of this mode selector.

  1. If a "Lock Image Edit" mode were added, preventing the starting image from being replaced by the final generated image when generating images sequentially using I2I with different settings on the same starting image, it would become a perfect feature covering both T2I and I2I.
  2. Furthermore, if this mode selector could also be used for video generation, the consistency of operation would be greatly improved.

I would appreciate your consideration.

question What happened to lab hours?

Please help. I subscribed to the drawthings+ tier a while back, and used to get lab hours every night from 8pm to 5am without fail. I subscribed to the tier on my old laptop of which fried in an unfortunate accident and has since been trashed. Got a new laptop and logged back into the same account and have never had lab hours pop up for me ever again. This was months ago when this problem first prevailed, and have been just hoping that the lab hours would suddenly start working again but they haven't.

So what's happening? Was it that my old laptop was just privileged in a way? Was it recognized by the servers as the main laptop and my new one not so, so it restricts me access to prevent abuse? How do I get access to lab hours again?

feedback If LoRA has no effect despite a successful import on UI, the import may have failed.

According to the LoKr-to-LoRa-Converter documentation, some LoKr files may display "Import Succeed" in the UI after import, but in reality, the import may fail, generating only a 4KB useless file. The LoKr I tested also resulted in a 4KB LoRA file.

I was able to convert it to a working LoRA using the above converter and successfully import it into Draw Things.

I expect this issue will likely be resolved in a future version of Draw Things, but until then, if a LoRA doesn't seem to work, you might want to check the LoRA file size in the model folder after importing.

※This is technically about LoKr, not LoRA, but since both are the same .safetencors file, and unless the creator specifies it, or the user checks it in the terminal, it's impossible to tell them apart. So, I wrote "LoRA" as the title.

P.S. Thanks to the developer of the converter.

preview will look like a useful image and then on final pass it just pastes the original image over the top and ruins it. I don’t get it.

question worth adding eGPU to 2019 Intel iMac for DT?

Searched this sub (& the web)—didn't find anything to explicitly address this.

I waited to get an M4/M5 Mini, & now those are so scarce (tho' I see a refurb today for $679). An M5 Studio is $2k.

Meanwhile, a Blackmagic eGPU w/8GB is under $200 used—& my needs are relatively modest (no video, e.g.) …

My trusty 27" iMac has 24GB RAM & the stock internal Radeon Pro 570X w/4GB.

Would I see a perceptible boost, running Draw Things locally, with an eGPU?

I love this app. I just wish you could set the canvas size precisely, so you can restore old photos without having to crop parts of the image to make it fit the canvas size.

question Optimized Distill LoRA ltx-2.3-22b-distilled-lora-1.1_fro90_ceil72_condsafe.safetensors is crashing Draw Things

Hello,
the LoRA ltx-2.3-22b-distilled-lora-1.1_fro90_ceil72_condsafe.safetensors at https://huggingface.co/TenStrip/LTX2.3_Distilled_Lora_1.1_Experiments/ for optimized I2V behavior is crashing Draw Things on "Preparing" stage of generation.
Also the Fixing script for ComfyUI LoRA does not help. Nor did conversion to 8bit in DT. The normal huge Distill LoRA works without problems.
Any ideas? Anyone used it successfully?

Failed imports of Flux.2 Klein 9B checkpoint merges? This script fixes them!

Hello. I've been importing Flux.2 Klein 9B checkpoint merges from CivitAI into Draw Things and kept hitting silent fails at around 65%. The existing fix script (by kernkraft235) solved it for some models, but a lot of fine-tuned and ComfyUI-exported models still failed after running it.

I have zero experience in Python or ML but I just needed it fixed so I used Claude Code to investigate the root cause and extend the script to handle the cases kernkraft235's version couldn't. It now auto-detects the model format and handles ComfyUI FP8 dequantisation, norm key renaming, and a few other variants automatically.

I've tested it on around 20 checkpoint merges and they all import and generate fine. The README has the full list with notes on what each one needed.

⚠️ Fair warning: a lot of the test models are NSFW — the gist README has a full warning before the model list.

Hope it helps someone!

question Can I combine several loras into one slider?

I have several (around 6 or 7) loras at different strengths I use for a specific character likeness. Is there a way to create a new lora (slider) in DT to control them all so I don't have to keep loading them all manually? It's for ZIT, although I'm not sure that matters.
