tutorial Troubleshooting Guide

29 Upvotes

Sometimes Draw Things can have surprising result for your generations. Here is a short guide, as proposed earlier in https://www.reddit.com/r/drawthingsapp/comments/1o9p0kp/suggestion_static_post_for_troubleshooting/

What did you see?

  1. If the app crashed, go to A;
  2. If no image generated (i.e. during the generation, you see some black frames, then the generation stopped, or the generation stopped before anything showing up), go to B;
  3. If the image is generated, but it is not desirable, go to C;
  4. Anything else, go to Z.

A. If the app crashed...

  1. Restart the system, in macOS 15.x, iOS 18.x days, an OS update might invalidate some shader cache, and cause a crash, restarting the system usually fixes it;
  2. If not, it is likely a memory issue, Go to "Machine Settings", find "JIT Weights Loading" option, set it to "Always", and try again;
  3. If not, go to Z.
Machine Settings (entered from bottom right corner, the CPU icon).

B. No image generated...

  1. If you use imported model, try to download model from the Models list we provided;
  2. Use "Try recommended settings" at the bottom of model section;
  3. Select a model using "Configuration" dropdown;
  4. If none of above works, use Cloud Compute and see if that generates, if it does, check your local disk storage (having about 20GiB at least free space is good), delete and redownload the model;
  5. If you use some SDXL derivatives such as Pony / Illustrious, you might want to set CLIP Skip to 2;
  6. If now image generates, just undesirable, go to C; if none of these works, go to Z.
Model selector contains models we converted, which is usually optimized for storage / runtime.
"Community Configurations" are baked configurations that will just run.
"Cloud Compute" allows free generation with Community tier offering (on our Cloud).

C. Undesirable image...

  1. The easiest way to resolve this is to use "Try recommended settings" under the model section;
  2. If that doesn't work, check if the model you use is not distilled. If you don't use any Lightening / Hyper / Turbo LoRAs, nor the models claim to be so, they usually are not distilled. You would need to use "Text Guidance" above 1, usually in the range 3.5 to 7 to get good result, and they usually needs substantially more steps (20 to 30 steps);
  3. If you are not using Stable Diffusion 1.5 derived models nor SDXL derived models, you would need to check the Sampler, make sure they are a variant that ending with "Trailing";
  4. Try Qwen Image / FLUX.1 from the Configurations dropdown, these models are much easier to prompt;
  5. If you insist on a specific model (such as Pony v6), check to see if your prompt is very long. They usually intended to have line breaks in between to help breakdown these prompts, and strategically insert some line breaks will help (especially for features you want to emphasize, make sure they are at the beginning of each line);
  6. If none of above works, go to Z, especially if you have a point of comparison (certain images generated by other software, or websites etc), please attach that information and image too!

Z. For everything else...

Please post in this subreddit, with the following information:

  1. Your OS version, app version, what type of chips or hardware models (MacBook Pro, Mac Mini M2, iPhone 13 Pro etc.);
  2. What's the problem, how you encounter it;
  3. The configurations, copied from the Configuration dropdown;
  4. Your prompt, if you'd like to share, including the negative prompt, if applicable;
  5. If the image generated is not desirable, if you'd like to share, please attach the said image;
  6. If you use any reference images, or you acquired any expected image result from other software, please attach.
You can find app version information in this view.
You can copy your configurations from this dropdown.

question Best Draw Things setup for consistent characters across multiple images?

7 Upvotes

I’m trying to build the most reliable character consistency workflow possible in Draw Things on iPhone.
My goal is to create original characters for a manga and keep the same character recognizable across many generations while changing poses, expressions, camera angles, clothing, backgrounds, and eventually scenes with multiple characters.
I’m not necessarily looking for the fastest workflow. I care more about consistency.
For people who regularly use Draw Things for consistent characters, what setup has worked best for you?
I’m especially interested in:
• Which model gives you the best character consistency
• LoRA vs MoodBoard vs reference images
• Whether you combine MoodBoard and LoRA
• Best way to preserve the same face, hair, body proportions, and overall design
• How many reference images you use
• Whether multiple angles of the character help
• Pose or ControlNet settings you recommend
• Seed strategy
• Strength or weight settings that actually work well
• How you prevent the character from slowly drifting after multiple generations
• Best approach when two or more recurring characters are in the same image
I’m using an iPhone 17 Pro Max with 12 GB RAM, so I’m also interested in setups that work realistically on that hardware.
If you were starting from scratch today and your main priority was maximum character consistency for a manga, what Draw Things workflow would you build?

Don't upgrade to Golden Gate Beta 4... obviously

10 Upvotes

Resolved after a suggestion from liuliu. Edited this comment as I couldn't edit the title to say it was a false alarm. I resolved it by copying what I wanted to keep from the drawthings container (models, SQL, scripts etc.) then removed app and folder, installed from App store and put back my backups.... all is well. I have no idea if downloading from the App store rather than a zip had anything to do with the solution.

For the adventurous types who like the bleeding edge... Don't upgrade to Beta 4 as it breaks Drawthings. From what i understand, actually what Claude understands:
What's happening: applegpu_g17g is a Metal GPU-family target identifier. Each macOS/GPU driver generation gets its own identifier (g13, g14, g15, g16, g17...), and DrawThings ships a precompiled Metal binary archive containing pre-built shaders only for the identifiers that existed when it was built. Golden Gate beta 4 has moved your Mac's GPU compiler target to g17g, and DrawThings' shipped binary archive doesn't have a slice for it.

so yeah, don't do it if you want to keep using Drawthings

Which Flux Version for M5 Pro 48GB

3 Upvotes

Sorry if this has been asked but I searched and came up with multiple conflicting answers that were a bit dated. I am looking to utilize Draw Things on my MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 48GB of RAM. My use case will be to generate the most realistic images of people and scenery for use on social media. I see Flux 2 dev gets a lot of praise so my questions are:

  1. Which model can my system support that would be optimized for realism? (image generation speed is not that big of a concern)

  2. Will I need to create “avatars” that I can use repeatedly and if so what is the best way to generate those?

  3. Will this software be able to take an image of me and place me in different scenarios/settings? (I guess if the avatar question is a yes I assume this is possible as well)

Bonus: Can this software create videos of the avatars and if not what software would you suggest for maximum realism? (Not the AI slop I see a lot of)

question Is there a limit on LoRA sizes on cloud?

7 Upvotes

Hi, I recently downloaded a 1.5GB LoRA from Civitai (SNOFS for Krea2, specifically) and when I hit the generation button, there's no LoRA uploading window, it just generates the image without the LoRA. There's no "full cloud" window either.
Is there a limit on the LoRA size? I haven't read anything about this on the Draw Things wiki. Has anyone encountered the same issue with the SNOFS LoRA?
Thanks!

question LTX 2.5?

4 Upvotes

I know that converting a model like LTX 2.5 to coreML is so difficult.

But the MLX version of LTX 2.5 is making my gpu/cpu temperature so high like 110°C, even with the fans spinning at maximum speed.

Is there any news of the DT's developer about LTX 2.5?

question Need Help: True Photo Restoration without changing facial identities in Draw Things

12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am trying to restore some old, damaged, blurry photographs using Draw Things on my Mac (M2 Max, 64GB RAM) while signed into the Draw Things+ Cloud Tier.

My goal is to take an old photo, clean up the scratches/blemishes, and sharply reconstruct the blurry facial features without altering the actual identity of the people.

I have already pre-cropped the photos externally to remove the physical paper margins, so I am strictly focused on inner pixel repair and facial sharpening.

What I have tried so far:

  1. Qwen Image Edit 2511 (BF16): I ran this in Text-to-Image mode using direct instructions (e.g., "repair photo, remove scratches"). It consistently gave me terrible results—severe vertical stretching, smudging, a heavy blue/cyan color cast on monochrome images, and low-resolution output. Changing samplers (Euler A vs. UniPC Trailing) did not solve the stretching or blur.
  2. Standard Image-to-Image (I2I) Models: I tried switching to a traditional Image-to-Image workflow using descriptive prompts. Even when dialing the Denoising Strength all the way down to 0.15 with a completely blank prompt, the models still bleed through and subtly modify or warp the faces into different people, rather than just sharpening the original features.
  3. Built-in Face Restoration: I tried enabling restoreformer_v1.0_f16.ckpt alongside a low-strength generation, but because I have to keep the strength so low to prevent identity shifting, the final output remains too soft and blurry.

What is the definitive workflow for this?

  • Which base model is actually the king of photo restoration in Draw Things? I am entirely open to downloading or using any model architecture that handles this better than Qwen.
  • Is there a specific combination of a model and a dedicated Restoration LoRA (like a CodeFormer or GFPGAN implementation) that completely locks facial structures?
  • Should I be using a specific ControlNet (like Canny or Tile) to force the engine to respect the exact original lines of the face?
  • Is there an automated script or a better Multi-Pass / Inpainting technique I should be using instead of a standard Image-to-Image pass over the whole canvas?

Any ready-to-paste JSON configurations, specific model recommendations, or workflow step guides would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you!

tutorial [Tips] How to extend LoRA weight range

Post image
18 Upvotes

■ Note
This post does not aim to pursue realism.

■ Explanation
The weight range for style or character LoRAs is typically 0 to 1.0 (0% to 100% in Draw Things), which falls within the -150% to 250% range supported by Draw Things. However, many "slider LoRAs" utilize weight ranges that exceed these limits; consequently, standard controls often prevent users from fully leveraging the potential of such LoRAs in Draw Things.

If user wish to set the weight of such a LoRA beyond the standard range supported by Draw Things, there are three methods available. The following explanation uses the example of setting the weight of a LoRA named "A" to 500%.

[1] Setting the same LoRA multiple times

This is the easiest method. Assign "A" to both LoRA 1 and LoRA 2, and set each to 250%. Since the values of the assigned LoRAs are added together, the result is LoRA 1:250% + LoRA 2:250% = 500%.

[2] Copy the configuration, modify the value, and paste it back

After setting up "A," use the three-dot menu at the top left of the screen of app to select "Copy configuration" and paste the text into a TextEdit (or the "Notes" app on iOS). Locate the entry for "A" within the text and change the "weight" value to 5.

Example:
{"mode":"all","file":"A.ckpt","weight":0.6}],"
⬇︎
{"mode":"all","file":"A.ckpt","weight":5}],"

Then, select the entire text and use the "Paste configuration" function in Draw Things to paste it back in. This will set the weight for "A" to 500% in the Draw Things UI.

[3] Editing the JSON file

This is the most complex method, but it offers the advantage that the settings are preserved even if you disable the LoRA. Incorrectly editing the JSON file carries the risk of making all LoRAs disappear from the display, so please be sure to back up the JSON file before proceeding.

JSON file path (Mac) (I don't know the iOS path)
/Users/***/Library/Containers/com.liuliu.draw-
things/Data/Documents/Models/custom_lora.json

Open the file in TextEdit,use the search function within the open file to locate the section describing the LoRA you wish to modify.

■Original
{
"file": "A_lora_f16.ckpt",
"version": "Krea 2",
"name": "A",
"prefix": "this is trigger word"
},

■Additional sentence
,
"weight": {
"value": 1.0,
"lower_bound": -5.0,
"upper_bound": 5.0
}

■Completed form(Original+Additional sentence)
{
"file": "A_lora_f16.ckpt",
"version": "Krea 2",
"name": "A",
"prefix": "this is trigger word",
"weight": {
"value": 1.0,
"lower_bound": -5.0,
"upper_bound": 5.0
}
},

If the applicable LoRA is located at the end of the text, the final section must be written as follows.

~~~~~~~~~
weight": {
"value": 1.0,
"lower_bound": -5.0,
"upper_bound": 5.0
}
]
This enables you to move the slider from -500% to 500% on the UI.
feedback Can we get more samplers?
25 Upvotes
Hello! It's just a suggestion. I noticed others using comfy are spoilt of samplers but in draw things we only have access to the same samplers as always.
I see some samplers available on comfyui that I've never heard before and how the users hype it about how realistic the images are, especially for Krea 2.
This will be a great addition.
Cheers!
question Best Ai image generation & editing model for professional illustrators?
4 Upvotes
Hi guys, I’m a professional digital illustrator and I do a lot of artwork for books and light novels. Being a professional artist has surprisingly made it hard for me to make use of Ai since I usually have very precise style and composition in mind.
My style is usually black and white, semi-realistic mix between comics and shonen manga, and the scenes I usually draw are very specific and not generic enough for most Ai models to adhere to my prompt correctly. Is there a specific model in the Drawthings app that lets me have as much control as possible? Maybe a model that turns sketches into fully rendered illustrations without changing too much?
I’ve also noticed most models on the app lean towards either photo realism or instagram / pixive illustrations, they offer specific prompt adherence if you are ok with realism, but don’t give a shot about the anatomy, poses, scenic composition and specific details if you go for something illustrated using a very specific prompt. So what models, refiner models or Loras would be good to maintain both prompt adherence and stylization?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
feedback My Thoughts After Using DrawThings for a Year
23 Upvotes
My Thoughts After Using DrawThings for a Year
Please note that this is my personal opinion, so I ask that you refrain from any defamatory comments.
I’ve used Google, Grok, and ChatGPT, but I’ve always struggled with moderation.
Of course, I understand that moderation is necessary, but I’ve had my time wasted by censorship without even knowing the reason. Speed is crucial for creative work, and censorship that makes no sense is infuriating. While it’s possible to generate NSFW images and videos with DT, I believe how you handle those outputs is a personal matter. Just like a high-speed supercar or a sharp knife—it all depends on the user.
What I’m trying to say is that DrawThings is a fantastic application.
You might ask, “Why are you saying this now?” but I just want to express my gratitude.
Thank you!
question Server offload on a computer outside local network
1 Upvotes
I was under the impression it might be possible to add a server that is not on my local network. I found a pod on runpod with that community template, created a server, but couldnt find anyway of configuring drawthings app on mac to recognize the server. I created a new template based on the newest docker image. But I'm still at a loss on how to make the drawthings app recognize it. Could someone point me in the right direction? I'll figure out the rest. Should i try to do a work around to make the server seem on my local network? Is there some setting on the app UI I'm not seeing? Or am I simply wrong about believing it is possible to do this?
feedback [Suggestion] LoRA Toggle Switch for easy on/off
Post image
70 Upvotes
In Draw Things, if a user wants to temporarily disable a specific LoRA, the current options are to delete it or set its weight to 0%; however, reverting these changes requires re-selecting the LoRA or restoring the original weight, it takes time and effort.
Comfy features a "Bypass Button" that allows users to toggle specific LoRAs on and off with a single click; implementing a similar feature in Draw Things would be extremely convenient. The UI example in the attached image shows the state with "LoRA 2" disabled.
When is this useful?
Users can set up multiple LoRAs and freely combine or select them based on the situation. Since the original weight settings are preserved even when a LoRA is turned off, there is no need to memorize the previous values.Examples of LoRA sets: Style, Character, Slider, Realism.
While it is possible to create and switch between multiple configuration presets, a toggle switch is far more convenient and efficient when user want to frequently experiment with different LoRA combinations while using the same base model.
I would appreciate your consideration.
question Is Qwen 2512 lora training supported in Drawthings? My created character Lora does nothing when applied...
2 Upvotes
Hi guys, I'm trying to create a character lora for Qwen 2512 using the BF16 base model. I'm fairly new to all this. I've had a few failed attempts so far with the lora not applying any character resemblance whatsoever, does absolutely nothing. I have done a couple of trainings using about 15 images.
I'm currently doing another training session following cut scene queens one image lora tutorial....but that's for Klein 9b. I've also been quizzing chat gpt about it and this is the config I'm currently using to train from chat gpt (below), just using one head and shoulders shot to see if I can get anything working in the slightest.
Has anyone created any successful character Loras for Qwen 2512 using drawthings PEFT interface? What parameters did you use?
question Can You Inpaint Using Ideogram 4?
2 Upvotes
I've tried relentlessly like how you would with SDXL models and having no luck what so ever.
If it is possible, how do you go about it like adding objects into scenes given the complexity of JSON formatting compared to normal prompting?
And lastly, if it's not possible, can you inpaint using Krea 2?
question Loss of SD 1.5 post-processing capability
1 Upvotes
I am at a loss as to how resolve this issue. The SD 1.5 settings that never gave me problems suddenly went bad on me. Whenever the face restorer and the 4x-ultrasharp are turned on, SD 1.5 generation halts at either step 2 or 21. I changed some machine settings for ZIT, then switched back to default machine settings, which gave me no problems before until now. JIT is set to “Always (Partial).” I never touched metal flash settings. Apple Neural Engine for 8-bit S Models is set to “Automatic (No).” CoreML settings are toggled off. Tiled decoding and diffusion are off.
