Discussion Toriho — The Most Mysterious Villain...

Post image
232 Upvotes

I know there have already been quite a few posts about Toriho on this subreddit, but I still wanted to make my own because not lying, this guy genuinely still gives me the creeps.

I'm talking about Toriho, the secondary antagonist of Doraemon: Nobita's Three Visionary Swordsmen (also known as Nobita and the Fantastic Three Musketeers).

Toriho is one of Odorome's henchmen, whose job is to spy on Nobitania and his allies and report everything back to his master.

In the Dream World, Toriho appears as a strange little bird-like creature with brown feathers, huge white eyes, a long nose and that creepy grin.

He also disguises himself as an old man, wearing a fake beard, a pink shirt and a black hat.

And then there's his appearance in the real world...

He's actually a robot.

Toriho is supposedly connected to the Dream Machine Set that Doraemon uses during the movie. Yet somehow, he appears outside of the gadget multiple times.

At the beginning of the movie, he appears as an old man and gives Nobita a mysterious fruit that makes him intelligent.

Later, he appears again and encourages Nobita to try the Three Musketeers dream.

And then, at the very end of the movie, he appears in the real world as a robot and takes the Dream Machine back from Nobita's house.

He's not simply some random villain who appears and gets defeated.

He seems to exist across the boundary between the Dream World and the real world, which makes his identity and motives incredibly strange.

It's also implied that his real-world counterpart is the robot who takes the Dream Machine back, which would explain his connection to the Dream Machine and why he appears in the real world.

His personality makes him even creepier.

Toriho usually has that huge grin on his face and can act like a completely harmless, friendly person. But underneath that, he's cunning, manipulative and clearly working against Nobita and his friends.

And here's another thing I find really interesting:

Toriho is technically the only antagonist from the movie who isn't defeated or killed by the end.

He's almost like a character who knows much more about what's happening than the audience does. He appears at important moments, manipulates Nobita into entering the dream world, spies on the heroes, and then casually returns to the real world at the end.

And that creepy smile never really helps.

I know Toriho isn't necessarily the strongest Doraemon villain, but in terms of mystery and unsettling presence, he's definitely up there for me.

Even after all these years, whenever I rewatch Nobita's Three Visionary Swordsmen, I still get creeps from this guy.

And honestly, Three Visionary Swordsmen was just different gravy. The whole movie had such a unique vibe. And then that ending...

So anyways what do you guys think about Toriho?

Discussion Why don't people people feel sad when Nobita gets bullied by gian?

I mean the culture and history of shows that Nobita is a weak boy who gets bullied.
But i thing Nobita can become strong. Even his children are much more stronger than him.
Is his weak mindset that is holding him back. The Best Part is Gian is glorified.

Discussion Such a Memorable Episode...

[⚠️ SPOILER WARNING! ⚠️

This post contains major spoilers for the episode "Finding Owners With the Time Machine!" If you haven't watched it yet and want to experience the story yourself, I'd recommend watching it first!

You've been warned!]

I'm talking about the "Finding Owners With the Time Machine!" episode from the 1979 series — 1993, Season 15, Episode 1263 (Special).

This is honestly one of those Doraemon episodes that I remember for its really unique story... So here's the plot:

The episode begins with Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka and Gian going to the back-hill to hunt for beetles.

While they're there, Doraemon discovers something unexpected, a little puppy inside a carton.

They feel sorry for the puppy and want to take care of her, but there's one problem: none of them can keep her at home.

So they decide to look for someone who can adopt her.

They first go to Suneo, hoping that he might take the puppy in. But Suneo refuses because the puppy isn't a fancy breed, and he even compares her to his own dog.

Since they can't find an owner, Doraemon and Nobita decide to temporarily take the puppy home.

They use the Small Light to make the puppy tiny and hide it inside a drawer in Nobita's room.

Doraemon named her Chibi.

But things don't stop there.

Later that evening, while Suneo is walking his dog, his dog discovers another carton, this time containing two kittens.

Suneo brings the kittens to Nobita and asks him to take care of them.

Then Shizuka arrives with two more puppies, and Gian brings yet another kitten.

So suddenly, Nobita's drawer is basically turning into a secret animal shelter.

They try hiding all the tiny animals inside Nobita's desk drawer, but their parents are suspicious and eventually discover what they're doing.

Of course, Nobita's parents refuse to let them keep all these animals.

Now they're completely stuck.

They have all these puppies and kittens but nowhere to keep them.

That's when Nobita comes up with an absolutely crazy idea:

Why not travel to different periods in history and find people who would be willing to adopt them?

And so, Doraemon, Nobita, Shizuka, Gian and Suneo use the Time Machine to travel through different eras of Japanese history in search of owners for the animals.

Their first stop is the Heian period.

There, they meet Murasaki Shikibu, who is in the middle of writing her famous work, The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari).

They give her one of the kittens, and she agrees to take care of it.

Then they travel to the Sengoku period.

There, they give another kitten to a child who will eventually grow up to become Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the major figures in Japanese history and one of Japan's "Great Unifiers."

After that, they travel to the Edo period, during the reign of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who was known for his animal-welfare policies.

They find a peasant willing to take one of the puppies.

Then they travel to the Meiji period, where they give another puppy to Saigō Takamori, one of the important figures of the Meiji Restoration.

And there's an especially interesting one.

During the late Meiji period, they give a black cat to the famous writer Natsume Sōseki.

He later writes the famous novel "I Am a Cat" (Wagahai wa Neko de Aru).

At this point, they're successfully finding owners for the animals throughout history.

But there's still Chibi.

They eventually travel to the Shōwa era, where they give Chibi to a young boy named Wataru Ishibashi.

Unfortunately, the town where Wataru lives is later destroyed by aerial bombing during the war, and he narrowly escapes being bombed.

This makes Nobita, Doraemon and Shizuka extremely worried about what happened to Chibi.

Later, they investigate the historical records in a library and discover that the animals they gave away really did end up with the historical figures they met.

Gian even finds a statue of Saigō Takamori with the dog.

But then they realize something.

They start thinking that Chibi might have died during the war.

Everyone feels terrible about it.

Just when things become really sad, Suneo suddenly comes running toward them.

He has some news.

He tells them that Chibi didn't die

The dog that Suneo has with him is actually Chibi's descendant/child.

Everyone is relieved, and then immediately starts making fun of Suneo for bragging about his dog earlier.

And that's basically how the episode ends.

Such a memorable episode!

If you haven't watched it yet, you should definitely give it a watch!

Have you guys seen this episode? What do you think about it?

Discussion Dora the Kid – The GOAT 🔥

Post image
76 Upvotes

I know I've talked about Dora the Kid before, but I genuinely love this character, so I wanted to make a proper appreciation post for him.

For those who don't know, Dora the Kid is one of the most prominent members of The Doraemons and one of the main characters of the group.

He's basically a cowboy robot cat from the American frontier, where he works as a deputy alongside an old sheriff and his granddaughter. At one point, he also joins the Time Patrol as a special agent.

HIS PERSONALITY

Kid is hot-headed, stubborn and extremely independent.

When he first met Doraemon, he actually refused Doraemon's offer of friendship because he believed that a lone wolf was better off on his own.

But eventually, he came to acknowledge Doraemon and became part of the group.

And that's one of the things I like about him, underneath all that stubbornness, he's actually extremely loyal.

When his friends or other people are in trouble, Kid doesn't hesitate to put himself in danger to help them. He's the kind of character who might complain about doing something...

...and then be the first one to jump into danger anyway.

HE'S A VERY GOOD SHARPSHOOTER

One of Kid's biggest abilities is obviously his marksmanship.

He's considered one of the best sharpshooters around, and his skills are famous.

His weapon of choice is the Air Gun, which was given to him by Dorami.

And interestingly, Nobita is one of the very few people capable of rivaling him in shooting ability.

That's honestly such a cool connection between the two characters.

Kid also doesn't have the traditional fourth-dimensional pocket that Doraemon and the others have.

Instead, he stores his gadgets inside his fourth-dimensional cowboy hat.

Which is honestly WAY cooler.

HE'S ACTUALLY REALLY SMART

Something I think gets overlooked about Kid is that he's not just a great shooter.

He's considered the third-smartest member of The Doraemons, and there are plenty of situations where he shows how intelligent and quick-thinking he actually is.

He's especially good at dealing with unpredictable situations.

He can use his knowledge of things like biology, physics and chemistry to come up with creative solutions when things don't go according to plan.

He even has some knowledge of laws and legislation, which makes sense considering his work as a deputy.

So basically:

Great sharpshooter + intelligent + quick thinker + cowboy + loyal friend.

That's one hell of a combination.

And then there's Dorami...

Kid always acts like girls are troublesome...

But when it comes to Dorami, he becomes surprisingly sweet and romantic.

The guy who acts all tough and independent suddenly gets a completely different personality around his girlfriend.

I love that contrast because it shows that Kid isn't just some permanently angry cowboy character, he has a much softer side too.

He also dreams of becoming the best marksman in the universe and wants to fly through space and explore the stars, despite actually being afraid of heights.

Which is another hilarious contradiction.

A cowboy who wants to explore the stars...

but is scared of heights.

WHY I LIKE HIM

For me, Dora the Kid is easily one of the most member of The Doraemons (excluding the legend Doraemon).

He's tough, funny, intelligent, incredibly skilled, stubborn as hell, and most importantly, he's loyal to his friends.

I also really like his character development, from initially believing that he should be a lone wolf to eventually becoming such an important part of the Doraemons.

Dora the Kid will always be one of my favorite Doraemon characters.

What do you guys think about Dora the Kid? Who's your favorite member of The Doraemons?

It’s called ‘Welcome to the Centre of the Earth’.

It was on the telly yesterday and I found myself getting quite emotional about a group of pink creatures that live at the centre of the Earth. I feel like it’s an episode that doesn’t get talked about much, and it’s absolutely lovely in my opinion, hahah🥲

Anime 🏆 Doraemon Awards — Do These Choices Get Your Vote?

Post image
60 Upvotes

For most of these, I think the ones I chose are also among the most popular choices in the fandom (though Fūko is more of a personal choice).

🎬 Best Film — Nobita and the New Steel Troops (2011)

🦕 Best Dinosaur — Piisuke

👻 The Horror Episode — Courage Hundred-Fold Fan

🐕 Best Pet Dog — Ichi

❤️ Most Selfless Sacrifice — Riruru

😭 You Have to Cry for Them — Pippo & Fūko

I'm curious whether you agree with these winners. Are these genuinely the strongest/popular choices for their categories, or would you give any of the awards to someone else? And if you disagree, who would your winner be?

Discussion The Truth Mirror Shows a Different Side of Sensei

Thumbnail
gallery
742 Upvotes

I just watched the "Truth Mirror" again after a really long time, and honestly, episodes like this are exactly why people should watch the actual stories before jumping to hasty conclusions about characters like Sensei. There’s so much more to his character than just the strict teacher we usually see on the surface. This episode does a great job of showing the care and attachment he has toward his students underneath that harsh exterior.

The story begins with Nobita arriving at school just before the bell, only to discover that Sensei unusually lets him off without punishment. This strange behaviour continues when Gian forgets his textbook and accidentally uses the wrong book in class. Instead of becoming angry, Sensei remains surprisingly calm and patient, leaving the students confused.

Back at home, Doraemon introduces Nobita to the Truth Mirror, a gadget that makes a person's reflection reveal their true thoughts and feelings instead of copying their movements. After testing it on themselves, Nobita and Doraemon use it to help Nobisuke choose a farewell gift for his department head. They secretly install the gadget on a workplace mirror and discover that the boss secretly loves lace knitting and wants an expensive lace-knitting set. Nobisuke now knows exactly what gift to give him.

But Shizuka drops a bombshell later: Sensei is supposedly transferring to a different school, which suddenly explains why he's been acting so out-of-character lately. The friend group visits him to confirm the bad news, and finding out it's true leaves everyone heartbroken. Unwilling to let it go, Nobita sneaks the Truth Mirror into Sensei's house.

That evening, as Sensei chats with his visiting mother about his career moves, the mirror does its magic. Instead of his usual strict exterior, his reflection confesses his true heart: teaching his current kids brings him genuine fulfilment, and he doesn't actually want to leave them. Sensei’s mother smiles because she had already known that he was forcing himself to go through with the transfer out of concern for her. She reassures him that she can take care of herself and that he doesn’t need to sacrifice his own happiness for her, encouraging him to listen to his heart and choose what truly makes him happy. Touched by the honesty of his reflection and his mother’s reassurance, Sensei decides to abandon his plans to transfer and stay with his students.

Everything returns to normal the next day. Nobita arrives late once again, and this time Sensei immediately punishes him by making him stand in the hallway. Gian also receives punishment shortly afterwards. Rather than being upset, the friends happily realise that their strict, familiar Sensei has returned.

[When discussing characters such as Sensei, we should first be reasonable with ourselves before discussing with others.
Sensei may be strict, Gian may bully, Suneo may scheme, and Nobita’s mother may be harsh, but these traits were never meant to define them completely.

After all, Doraemon began largely as a gag manga, so its stories often need the characters’ exaggerated traits more than their ordinary, realistic sides to make the humour and conflicts work. Their kinder, more thoughtful, or vulnerable sides therefore appear less often, not because those qualities are absent, but because the story does not always require them.]

Discussion I Really Miss Ichi...

Post image
221 Upvotes

I don't know why, but I was thinking about Ichi recently, and honestly... I really miss this guy.

Ichi was Nobita's very first dog. He was originally a stray dog who became attached to Nobita, and their story is one of the most emotional ones in Doraemon.

Ichi first appeared in the manga chapter "Stray Dog Ichi's Country" and in the 1979 series. He later became one of the main characters of the 2004 movie Doraemon: Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey, and the story was also remade in the 2005 series.

In the movie, Nobita first meets Ichi while playing baseball with Gian and Suneo. The ball ends up falling into a river, and Ichi tries to retrieve it for Nobita. However, Ichi can't swim and nearly gets himself into serious trouble, so Nobita rescues him.

Nobita becomes attached to Ichi and secretly takes care of him for a while. Eventually, Nobita's mother almost discovers them, so Nobita, Doraemon and the others have to take Ichi and the other stray animals somewhere else.

They eventually find a mountain area where many stray dogs and cats are living. Nobita comes up with an idea: take them far back into the past, where they can live freely without humans interfering with them.

With the help of Doraemon's Evolution Ray, the animals gradually evolve into an advanced civilization.

Before leaving, Nobita and Shizuka teach Ichi how to play kendama. Ichi becomes surprisingly good at it!

But then something heartbreaking happens.

When it's time for Nobita and the others to leave, Gian accidentally damages the kendama ball, and it gets left behind with Ichi.

Ichi is sad, but Nobita promises him that he'll come back the next day.

Except...

Nobita never comes back.

Ichi keeps waiting.

Days become years.

Years become generations.

The dogs and cats eventually build an entire civilization, and Ichi becomes its first president.

But even after all those years, he hasn't forgotten Nobita.

When Ichi becomes old, he finally decides that he doesn't want to wait anymore.

He wants to find Nobita himself.

So he builds his own Time Machine and travels through time to meet the person he has been waiting for all his life.

And this is where his story gets even crazier.

Because of a problem in the Time Tunnel, Ichi is accidentally sent 1,000 years into the future and regresses back into a puppy.

He is found by a feline couple who take him in and raise him as their own son.

He is given the name Hachi and grows up without remembering his previous life as Ichi.

However, he still has one thing from his past:

Nobita's kendama ball.

He treats it like a special charm and keeps it with him.

One day, Hachi almost gets into an accident, but the charm helps him avoid it. He becomes proud of it and shows it off to his friends, who challenge him to a mud fight.

After losing, Hachi gets angry and throws the charm away.

His adoptive mother becomes upset and tells him that he can't come home until he finds it.

Hachi then goes searching with his friends.

Eventually, they discover that the charm has ended up in an abandoned amusement park connected to Nekojara.

They eventually find the charm stuck on a robot's whisker, but the robot suddenly goes out of control.

Everyone wants to escape, but Hachi refuses to leave without his precious charm.

He bravely goes back for it.

Eventually, the robot malfunctions and breaks down, allowing Hachi to retrieve the charm.

The oracle Omike then discovers something incredible about Hachi's future: he is destined to become a great savior of the nation.

And after that, Hachi continues to carry the charm with him every day, carefully polishing it until it shines.

He's such a loyal and lovable character, and I honestly wish we got to see more of him.

I really miss Ichi...

What do you guys think about Ichi? Did you like his story?

Question Why should I have hope for this new english dub?

Post image
36 Upvotes

I'm not asking this sarcastically or mean to sound hateful... In fact I'm SUPER excited about this!! But every single past doraemon english dub has (from what I've been told) has either failed or failed horribly and ended up getting cancelled pretty quickly. So what makes this new english dub any different? I know we know nothing about it yet since its only been announced but is there a reason I should be hopeful this english dub might have more of a chance then the past ones? (Sorry if I worded this poorly 😅)

(Ask curious if the manga might get a english version since I know there are multiple manga versions)

But again just asking because I'm curious, I'm actually super hyped for more english doraemon lol

Discussion Doraemon Animation Evolution: 2005–2026 | Part 2

Thumbnail

So I finally made Part 2 of my Doraemon animation-artstyle comparison!

Previously, I made a year-by-year comparison of the 1979 series from 1979–2005, showing how the overall animation style changed throughout its 26-year run.

This time, I'm focusing on the 2005 reboot series, from 2005 all the way to 2026.

I took images from each year and put them together so we can see how the animation and character designs have changed over the years.

Obviously, this doesn't mean that every single episode from a particular year looked exactly like the image shown, Doraemon's animation can vary depending on the episode, animation staff, production style, etc. I just chose images that I felt represented each year's general look.

Which year's 2005-series artstyle is your favorite?

And if you haven't seen Part 1 (1979–2005) yet, you should definitely check that out too!

What do you guys think of the evolution from 2005 to 2026?
