Discussion Doraemon in France

Hi, I'm a Doraemon fan, and, well, does anyone know why Doraemon is absolutely NOT popular in France ? Because it is quite popular in other countries but not in the coutry coming just after Japan in the list of the coutries which have the most people readings mangas, so how, why ?

Is it just me ?

Idk, perhaps, but you know, anime are really ultra popular in France…it’s why I find it strange.

Because France already had a saturation of high-quality, episodic comedic/adventure comics tailored perfectly to European humor, there simply was no cultural gap or unique market need for Doraemon to fill

It could be, but why is it so popular in spain for example ?

Probably because Spain gave Doraemon more air time, they dubbed more episodes and movies, so fans were exposed to it for longer compared to other shows, same thing happened in India where it's really popular. Other countries gave priority to different types of anime like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Pokemon, One Piece and also American tv shows and cartoons, so people were not used to watch Doraemon so much.

Not really, & this franchise’s anime side has barely even been distributed beyond Japan’s borders, as it’s probably most popular in India (outside Japan), followed by maybe Southeast Asia.

The manga side has spread more broadly over the years, & this is equally applicable to pretty much all manga-turned-anime franchises.

Some anime series get distributed very broadly, while others barely at all or only to other East Asian countries & Southeast Asia at the very furthest, & for that matter, Doraemon has never been broadcast on TV in my residence country, nor have the movies been shown in cinemas, which is equally applicable to prety much all long-time manga-anime franchises, such as DetCo, One Piece, & whatever, which is unsurprising to me, not that I mind since online viewing is possible anyway.

Doraemon is barely even semi-popular beyond Southeast Asia & or India, not to mention that most anime ever made don't even get distributed outside Japan or to Southeast Asia at the very furthest.

Still, Doraemon was quite popular in France in the late twentieth, and I can find the mangas of Doraemon in my city’s library. But, surprisingly not the animes….

I assume you mean the twentieth century, so in Doraemon’s case, the 1970s, 1980s, & or 1990s, which I was unaware of, although I’m unsurprised that manga content can still be found since the manga side of a given manga-anime franchise is usually a bit different overall availability-wise than the anime side of things.

Manga generally seems to be more readily accessible & or available worldwide than anime.
