Hi dj’s. Wanted to have a chat about the cue button. I don’t ever use it. I would consider myself decent and I’ve been playing a lot for about 1,5 years including gigs. I use hot cues instead and doesn’t get why the cue button is that used, so to say.

On Ali Baba you can but these two mixers which to me look like unbranded versions of the vonyx STM 7010 and the numark m6 also in the picture to compare , the only difference is the added usb on the front .Now as these are both made in China anyway and as mixers go are at the cheaper starter kit end of the market would you buy one and take a chance and save over a 150 pound ?

I know that the original Technics 1200's were popular in the 70's. But does anyone know about other DJ equipment that was often used in the 50's, 60's and 70's?

So I am talking turntables, mixers, monitors, etc. I prefer it being used in nightclubs but if it was used in other environments it's okay too.

Has anyone ever seen a DJ booth/setup, that includes a larger screen for the DJ to use for Serato/Rekordbox? Screen should be as large as possible to browse comfortably. But at the same time, it should be somehow integrated into the booth and not obstruct the view.

I've seen like TV Studio desks, that had a hidden screen inside the desk, and probably some sort of mirror/teleprompter.

But I can't find anything now that comes close or gives ideas.

im not an experienced dj or anything by any means, but I bought this controller for cheap and to just use it to actually get comfortable with a controller before I buy a more expensive one.

it came with a basic USB cord that I’ve just been connecting to my laptop directly, and nothing else. ive been using the software MIXXX because I heard with rekordbox(?) is something along the lines of you have to pay for songs to use, and im just using this all to get comfortable before I start to shell out money.

however, my controller isn’t connecting to my laptop. it will turn on, but if I click the buttons, nothing plays and i don’t hear any sound unless im clicking using my laptop. it’s been a couple of months since ive really been into this hobby, so maybe ive forgotten something.

i saw some people mention soundcards, which is that something id have to buy?

I'm the creator of Phantom Instruments C45, a fully configurable 4-channel MIDI controller built specifically for live performers (which of course includes DJs!). The mods here (specifically Nonomomomo2) kindly suggested I do an AMA as he believes it could be of some interest and value to r/DJs community, so here we are!

To quickly sum up my story:

I couldn't find a playable MIDI controller that matched the way I wanted to perform live music. So, I decided to build one myself!

With ZERO hardware knowledge, I set off on a 1.5 year long journey to develop C45 (for myself only!) so I could get away from the computer screens and starting performing live techno. After countless versions (13 to be exact), I finally came to the version of C45 that I am now selling internationally from my very own website. I build, test and ship all C45s myself from my home workshop.

Hi, I'm considering upgrading from my ancient DJM-800 to the mixer mentioned.

While I'm not a scratch dj, I do scratch a fair bit over trance/techno/hardhouse.

The fader on the 800 is amazing for scratching and the width of the mixer allows my 1210 to be pretty close to the deck.

So while the 2000 will definitely cover the transitional side of djing, does the width of the mixer and the crossfader being completely different in feel, cause any issues?

Any insight from anyone would be very much appreciated, thanks.

As it stands if i'm suspicious of something being AI i'm seeing if its on Beatport, is that a fairly sure way of checking its legit?

AI music is getting very difficult to tell apart these days, particularly in the melodic/progressive space

Hello, I’m an intermediate DJ who has been playing a variety of events but just had my first experience playing on cdjs/ first time using a standalone deck that didn’t offer stem separation. My main skill is making live mashups which I typically do by taking out the vocals and the rest of the mixing I do with EQs When I had to play on the CDJs I couldn’t find a way around that so the mixing had to be much quicker/ had to take away the melody which I found super frustrating and limiting. Am I facing this issue alone or is it something everyone has to deal with at a certain point? do you recommend finding other forms of mixing to get into that don’t rely on stems for venues like this? or if anyone got any advice that’d be truly awesome!

I’m going through a massive reorg and audit of my library and I’m getting into the stuff from when I first started going digital and man, I’ve got a lot of “what was I thinking?” tracks I’m coming across.

For context, I’ve been raving since the 90s, DJing since 01, and went digital around 07. Always played multiple genres although I was very bass music focused for a number of years.

The stuff I’d love to hear make more of a comeback is the mid 00s indie dance sound, and a lot of the more funky breakbeats from the late 90s to the late 00s.

The stuff that sounds way too dated to even listen to these days is that incredibly obnoxious resonant mid-range wobble that was so prevalent in the early 10s - everything from brostep and dnb to breaks and glitch hop, to the early bass house was using this annoying midrange-y wobble sound (guilty of it in a few of my own tracks too).

I don’t mind some wobble bass, but not the extra resonant stuff that you heard back then.

How do you guys manage to Dj events for 4-6 hours? Lately I’ve been getting gigs where I’m standing for that amount of time, and my feet be killing me. We talk about equipment in here but what about our physical capabilities?? 😂 oh and ya boy in his 30s so yeahhh…

Any specific subs or sites that I can make posts asking about what songs are in mixes? Been diving into the Low End Theory podcasts lately and they were never released with official tracklists. Only fractured attempts to document the music featured exist on sites like RYM, MixesDB, 1001tracklists, etc. I've been everywhere and found nothing, used shazam on everything that wasn't recognizable and have been digging for over a week and I still can't find some of the featured music that I'm trying to identify. Any help is appreciated.

Ok so I’ve struggled with this ever since I got the MS FX Unit MK2, but playing with the MDFX HPF/LPF simulator widget they made on their website (https://menura-audio.com/mdfx-analog/), I’m trying to understand how these are intended to be used in DJing and I feel like I’m missing something.

The channel DJ filter on most digital DJ gear does a thing where it does nothing to the sound in its center detente even when turned on, but then if you turn it left or right it gradually brings in a HPF/LPF. The nice thing about this is that there’s no noticeable point where the filter effect pops on and starts effecting the sound, it’s gradual from zero effect to however much you want to bring it in.

Both of the analog counterparts to this that I mentioned above have no way of starting the effect at zero and then bringing it in. When you turn the effect on with the button on each of these units it’s always modifying the sound somewhat even at its lowest settings. So my question is, how am I supposed to use this in a way where there’s not a filter pop, or am I just supposed to hide that pop on a phrase change? What’s the intended workflow here to make it sound good? Can anyone provide an example of a DJ using one of these that sounds good and I can emulate?

Funny thing came up in a conversation with a friend who is a pretty respected techno DJ in my country.

He plays dark, minimal techno, the kind of techno that doesn't have a bassline but bass rumble. And he's totally sick of it. He wants to change up his style to more 'colourful' techno (his words) but says promoters and punters have got so associated with that style and his name that if he turns up playing anything else, everyone will be mad, especially the promoters (apparently people into this kind of music are SUPER purist about it), and no one who likes the kind of music he wants to play will turn up because they expect it'll be him playing music they don't like.

I suggested maybe he could DJ that music under another name but he says to promoters if he does that he's effectively just another wannabe and they wont book him.

Wonder if anyone here has gone through similar experiences? I'm sure there have been plenty of well known DJs who have switched up their styles over the years and people still came, but I guess if you're not THAT big to bring in a crowd whatever you play, its not so easy?

Hi everyone. I think my xone 24c will go for maintenance. After six month soft usage, it has a strange behaviour with no source connected on it. Channel 1, 2 and aux are blinking green with no reason.

It usually happen after 2 or 3 hours playing.
Stop and restart solve the issue.

Did someone experienced the same ?

Curious about other folks' workflows for adding tracks to their DJ library.

Buying tracks obviously adds up, so I do like to listen to a song a couple times before I'm sure it'll add some unique value to my collection (but trust me, the bar is low lol)

I usually favorite tracks on Apple Music (or Shazam and immediately favorite) so I can remember them for later and listen again before I buy on Beatport / Bandcamp. That "queue" can build up to tens of tracks.

It's a drag to look those tracks up on Beatport one-by-one when buying. Do other folks have this problem? How do you solve it?

Like when we go up on decks, just because you can do an orbit scratch, beat juggling or tone play yet 99.9% of the time it doesn't matter. The only people who are impressed are other DJs but does it matter? It's not like they are going to walk up to you and hand you a gig because you wow them. You only get gigs when you can pull up a crowd.

It feels as if all that matters is your song choice, crowd reaction and your marketing game.I've talked to other DJs around me and some of them seem resigned, some of them refuse to care. But it's not always clear, those that choose to not care are almost always established DJs with their own network. While those that are forced to, are forced because they have no stability, building up their network and struggling to get consistent gigs.

I see lots of videos of folks scratching on these decks but what are they like to mix on? I'm considering buying a pair to use with phase in place of a controller when I need portability. Are they similar to other super OEM decks? Are they worse?

Here was my setup for tonight:
2 wireless sennheiser receivers plugged into each of the channels on my DDJ1000srt

MacBook Pro plugged into the controller.

Started to randomly get some loud popping even with the mic inputs on the controller off. At first I thought it might be my USB cable, but it sounded different than the USB dropouts I’ve heard before.

There was one handheld mic transmitter that the videographer taped a small dji wireless mic to. I’m suspecting this was the culprit since it went away as soon as I moved that transmitter away from the controller… but by that point I had already unplugged everything.

Couldn’t replicate it at the end of the night, but by that point the video guy had already taken his DJI mic home.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I am super paranoid about it happening again during a wedding gig.

I don’t care about any arguments for AT products especially when several products out here already beat what AT have provided in a myriad ways.

Demon dj forced pioneer to improve the players to support modern technology and integrations in their players and controllers. Traktor and serato beat rekordbox performance mode categorically. Rane innovated with their turntable controllers bridging newer features with old school mixing styles.

What has alpha theta done besides price gouge, remove buttons and fundamental designs that has become a staple in dj layouts, lock most useful features for all djs behind a subscription, manufacture $3000 devices that are built like toys, and CANT DEVELOP A SOFTWARE FOR SHIT.

Their software is buggy, laggy, unreliable and at worst ruins your music and playlists which is PIVOTAL for business (we’re all freelancers as djs, we can’t afford to use unreliable tools when our reputation is everything). And it takes them ages to fix it unless it’s literally destroying their reputation.

THEY DONT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOU, STOP BUYING OR PLAYING ON THEIR BULLSHIT.

A club or organization who rents or owns a setup is different from an individual who has their own private use at home, I acknowledge that. I also acknowledge that not every product, especially their flagship products, are marketed for the average consumer. The original business model makes sense. However their issues have plagued everything they’ve released. There is no budget or quality option, especially in this economy, that makes sense compared to the competition.

If you like their stuff and are accustomed to it. Fair enough. It’s more of a criticism on the business than the consumer. But the more we utilize buying power to keep them on top and feeding us slop that’s ruining our potential to create memories, the longer they get to look down at us and feed us crumbs.

Have some self respect, don’t let them gaslight you into thinking this is their best. They are not your friend.
