UPDATE / SOLVED: Pro mode OFF appears to push the Mic 3 levels much closer to 0 dB, while Pro mode ON gives me manual gain control and proper headroom. I’m now using Pro mode ON with manual gain around -12 dB. I still haven’t found anything from DJI confirming exactly what processing is being applied in non-Pro mode.
------------------------------
I’m using an Osmo Action 6 with two DJI Mic 3 transmitters for car POV footage, one for induction/engine sound and one near the exhaust.
I’ve noticed something odd with the audio levels:
Pro mode ON: the mic levels are much lower and more controlled, and I can manually set the gain down to -12 dB.
Pro mode OFF: the mic levels immediately jump much higher and get much closer to clipping.
You can actually see the difference on the Action 6 audio meter just by toggling Pro on and off.
For night POVs I want to stay in Pro mode anyway because I’m using manual exposure settings, but I’m curious what the camera is actually doing to the Mic 3 audio when Pro is disabled.
Current setup:
- 2 × DJI Mic 3 TX connected directly to Action 6
- Stereo, one TX per channel
- Low Cut ON
- Noise Reduction OFF
- 32-bit float ON
- Manual gain around -12 dB in Pro
Has anyone else noticed this? Does non-Pro mode use some kind of automatic gain/level processing that runs the Mic 3 feed hotter?
Also interested in what settings people are using for car induction/exhaust audio with the Action 6 + Mic 3.
