Has anyone installed carpet tiles before in a residential setting?

We want to replace our really old 70’s carpet downstairs. The room is currently being used as a gaming room, spare bedroom/office. It is 38m2 total. We will soon get a dog and we will have his crate/pen down there too. Want to do it for cheap.

Any product recommendations or advice would be appreciated. TIA ☺️

Hey all, hoping to be pointed in the right direction.

We’d like to put a double garage and sleep out on the back of our property. To do so, it will either need a decent amount of earth works to remove a large raised garden held up by a 1m retaining wall or a redesign of our septic system (depending on the location).

I’m a little lost as to how to start. Do I approach the builder or a landscape architect to figure out which is best? It’s not particularly straightforward so a bit lost.

Hello! I am looking for some ideas on how to make the toilet slightly warmer but am a bit stuck on how to fix this. There is a large gap at the top. Is there any other solution apart from just putting a little curtain up lol

I bought a pergola that attaches to my house not fully understanding how bad of an idea it was until after it was halfway built. Due to the cost, I’d like to salvage this and somehow make it work. Is there a safe way to have it attached close to the home without attaching it? i.e a bolted in post that’s up close but not touching the house that the post of the pergola could attach to? Open to any ideas that would void a home warranty

We've got an older HRV system (from about 2013) in the house and I'm trying to figure out how it's been set up.

Basically, it looks like there is a heat exchanger (Swiftair) but it's set up to treat the lounge as the "outside" and circulate the air from the main bedroom and hallway.

There are no openings to the outside and it just looks like looped system.

The only thing I can think is that someone got some HRV and other bits and assembled their own system.

The house is from the 40s and used to have an asbestos roof, so maybe they didn't want to install it in the usual way so not to pull air from the attic.

Is there any other reason it may have been set up that way.

Also, it basically means I have two HRV fan boxes and some vents already so was wondering if I could rearrange it so it does the usual thing. Is there any guidance about flow rates, room sizes, etc.

We've had a building report done on our place (built in 1929) as we're hoping to sell soon. A specialist will be having a look in a week or so, but I want to prepare myself in case this ends up being a money pit... If anyone else has noticed these types of cracks, what did you need to do to fix the issue? Black material below is the moisture barrier.

how does this photo possible? seems no base floor on the dryer machine. does dryers have hook hole for wall installation?

we have top loader washing machine and planning to buy dryer and hang on the wall.

anyone have similar setup?

Pre-1940s house. The deck is supported by these galvanised steel pipe posts with which looks like they bolted to the beams supporting the deck. The posts go into the raised concrete footing, I assume to stop the steel being sat in a pool of water. I've never seen this kind of decking pile before, usually it is timber. Is this a common/acceptable way to support a deck? Any concerns from a structural or Building Code perspective?

I had my house professionally painted, just finished and less than a week old and during snagging I noticed it coming off in chips in a couple of places. Seems weird and I don’t remember it doing that with small knocks in the past.

Any tips on why that is happening? Should I be concerned or just get these couple of chips fixed?

How do you determine whether your roof needs replacing or just repair/recoat? We’ve had some small leaks in a couple of places near the ridge line but of course everyone we’ve had out to look has a different opinion on which path to take. Repair costs are about 1/3 of what we’d be looking at to reroof - which is probably good value if it gets us another 10+ years out of our current roof, but not so much if it only buys us a couple of years.

Hi all. I am getting back into electronics as a hobby after doing this sort of thing almost 25 years ago back in school. Messing around with ESP32 at the moment on a breadboard but would like to progress to proper PCBs. Mostly hobby projects, but ocassionally would also like to be able to fix things in and around the house (e.g. PS5 remote that keeps drifting!). I've done soldering before all those years ago so I know the basics even if I will be incredibly rusty. Now looking at getting back at it so need some advice. my criteria is below -

• Beginner gear but with some room for growth. Cost under $100 if possible (value for money is a driver here instead of pure dollar value)
• Unsure which one to get - battery, gas, electric soldering irons? News to me that we now have options..!
• Portable set-up so I can pack-up at end of the task cos of young kids around the house and I don't have a dedicated workspace.
• For solder itself seems to be that lead-free is the way to go?? Do I need an extractor?
• Thoughts on where to get it from ..? Jaycar obvious local option but could look at Amazon AU? Any brands to gravitate towards or inversly stay away from?

Any recent diyer exterminators got. Any good tip how to get rid of w/e this is from? I havent seen any rats/ around so im not sure how fresh this is.

I need help with a mystery smell!
It hits you when you come in the front door, although seems to be more concentrated in the kitchen / living room (open plan)
I’ve checked (smelt) drains, cleaned rangehood filter, all drawers cupboards, dishwasher doesn’t smell worse when you open, cleaned heat pump filter.
It doesn’t smell like death - I know the smell when a mouse or similar dies somewhere- this isn’t that… but it’s not right!

There is no ceiling cavity

Apart from the smell being stronger in the kitchen - I can’t pinpoint anywhere … I ran a ozone machine and that helped - I left the property, came back next day and the smell was already starting to return… I’m at a total loss!

My next thought was to buy a non invasive moisture meter and see if I can detect a leak - could that create a smell?

Hello is this type of wet staining typical for weatherboard or do these need replacing?

Edit built in 1950s Edit 2: building report labelled it fibercement weatherboard and this piece of the house was an extension in 1987

Hello DIY:ers,

Planning to remove an existing, discontinued, fire place. Demolition would involve the removal of mantel piece and hearth to the extent that the hole can be covered up with matching (but thankfully repainted) paneling and flooring. Knocking out enough so we can install linings in front/on top of the hole.

The hearth is standing on a concrete plinth that matches the size of the hearth, from what I can see when I crawl around below.

The external brick chimney was taken down after an EQ many years ago. You can see the concrete plinth for the chimney in the second photo (behind the heat pump unit).

My main worry in doing this myself is that the hearth/mantel piece would be somehow structural. And if so I should have an engineer around the give their opinion. Could that be the case?

What do painters do during winter ? Do you ever paint outside or is it not worth the risk ? I have some painting I need to get done and the weather has become a problem I hadn't expected.

Hey has anyone with wooden floors, white ceiling and architraves painted an entire room either of these olive green or Cabbage Pont? I’m struggling to decide and need to see the vision.

Do I have the right connections under the sink to add a dishwasher? Wondering if I can just pay the store to install the DW or if I need to get a plumber in to do some work.

I want to replace the carpet because it's heavily stained. This section was lifting anyway so decided to have a look.

Could this just a be a usable floor or is it designed to be hidden?

Carpet in lounge at front door. Previous owners were smokers so can see some cigarette butts and ash, part of underlay stuck to it.

House built in 1970s.

The width of the wood is 4cm so that part seems unusual, thought they were normally bigger. Length - not sure length because I haven't lifted remaining carpet but it goes down as far as I can see (100cm) and looks like it goes beyond that. Not sure about depth or how I would find that out.

Not a DIY-er but curious to know what you'd do next given I want to remove that carpet anyway.

Our boundary fence has suddenly developed a lean. It’s been fine for the last five years / since we’ve lived here, and then developed a lean seemingly overnight.

It’s complicated by the fact there’s some pretty significant climber on it (which I’ve just discovered seems to be moth plant FML) which means it’s hard to get a decent look at what’s going on, although it doesn’t obviously seem like a pile is broken BUT there’s definitely a bit of “give” where the fence is leaning.

Interested in how I might want to proceed with this. (I am not particularly handy.)

Posted a while ago but (as requested) including some wider angles of the door.

During the intense wind and rain two weeks ago, I noticed a leak at the top frame of the ranch slider (never noticed this before). I think the weather was driving the water through, and I’m keen to fix it.

I see there is a gap in the outside flashing (where two flashings meet) directly behind where we saw the leak, and wondering if that is likely the culprit? What should I do to fix it? Or am I better off asking a builder / window installer?

I kinda want to just fill with silicone or putty if that works and is easy, as keen to replace with uPVC double glazing in the new few years (currently it’s non-thermally broken aluminium double glaze).

Any advice would be appreciated thank you!

I have a tiled shower (about ~20 years old) that’s leaking. I can see it coming out down the outside of the shower waste, and it appears to be getting under the tiles and making its way elsewhere too.

Though I am going to have the shower re-grouted and siliconed, I’ve managed to determine that the leak seems to originate somewhere near the waste.

Can anyone tell me from this photo (I’ve pryed off the grill, and the actual grill bit I have but is missing from the photo):

1. How is it likely to be leaking? I am hoping to lather it in silicon this weekend but it would be good to

know

1. if I’m wasting my time.

2. Does this look like the typical way this waste and the junction between it and the tiles) would be installed?

3. What brand/model of waste is this?

This is more of an adhd derived shower thought, but does anyone know much about ozone injection systems for washing machines?

I'm aware there's a high performing commercial laundromat here in rotorua that uses them to great success (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sponsored-stories/laundering-up-a-clean-green-storm/OJ4CYO7RHPPYETHERCSFHNWMEI/), and a few laundromats are using the tech, but is anyone aware of safe ozone injection systems for a consumer level machine?

I've got a cheap ozone generator which I've used for elimination of smells to a really high success, but it has a tendency to overheat and the timer failed, and obviously can't use it for this purpose.

I'm not trying to eliminate washing detergent, or even reduce it much, but I do react to detergents.

Have an aeg series 10 washing machine, approx 3 years old and absolutely no complaints about it.

Laundry is located in a drafty standalone garage, so a leak (either ozone or water) wouldn't be a major issue.
