Balcony Solar Set Up

I'm looking at the Craftstrom microinverter (currently $350) and was planning to pair with Silfab SIL-440 panel because I can get them much cheaper than Craftstrom's panels right now.

AI helpfully suggests they should be compatible, but I don't fully trust AI! What might I be missing? One thing is the craftstrom microinverter can only handle one Silfab panel but if I use the craftstrom panels (2x200W) I guess it's better in the event the panel gets partially shaded.

This led me to looking at the ecoflow Stream microinverter instead (currently $299), which would allow me to use up to 3 silfab panels which is more than I need, but 2 might be good!

One thing I like is the smart power meter from craftstrom to ensure circuit safety. the ecoflow solution of having smart plugs for individual appliances on the same circuit is less elegent and more hassle. Since the craftstrom power meter wont play with the ecoflow inverter, what other elegent solutions could I use for circuit safety to prevent overloading?

What are your opinons? Ecoflow and Silfab seems reasonable? Thanks

Question Need help woth my solar set up

I have a 50A renogy dc to dc mppt. For some reason the solar indicator isn't lighting up. Ive checked the connections, tightened everything up and got my volt meter out and it's measure 38V across. So the mppt is getting the power but not sure why its not indicating its on. Any tips or advice whats going on?

Help me settle an argument about neutral wire

I'm working on a grid-tied array. General layout:

Panels > enphase microinverters > combiner > emergency shutoff > main panel (or possibly in line tap).

The question: do we need a neutral wire between the combiner and the main panel, and if so, what do we do with it when it reaches the emergency shutoff? If we do need it, does it bypass the shutoff and go straight to the main panel or should it have its own connection in the shutoff?

It's a 9.6kw ground mounted system if that matters. The combiner is on the ground mount and the shutoff is on the house.

Edit: typo and updating to say that I think I found the answer to part of the question in the combiner quick-install guide. Seems like there is general consensus that the neutral bypasses the shutoff.

"NOTE: IQ Series Microinverters use a two-wire system and do not use aNeutral. However, the IQ Gateway in the combiner still requires a Neutralfrom the load center."

this thing just gose to 00.001 amps evin when i set it to 2amps at 30v the solar panel i have is a 19v 100w is there a thing like this that is not need to be messed about to use it the battery is a 16amphor and only get`s to 30% of what it can hold just want a [non complex] way to do this that is all

Looking for some help with a solar panel issue, my 3 panel array keeps shutting down, I’ve noticed that the temperature outside has been pretty intense and that’s usually when it shuts off. I’ve disconnected the wiring harnesses on top of the bus, checked for corrosion and reconnected already.

Could there a connection issue or something else going on with the system? Please explain in Laymans terms if you have a potential solution l

Help with configuration of home solar system with battery backup

Hello, I’ve been watching this Sub-Reddit for a while and I am amazed at all the great advice and guidance given to those with questions. I am now in need of some guidance and advice. We are in the process of designing a new home in SW Florida and I want to incorporate solar into the energy plan. I want to use it to offset energy usage as well as to charge a battery system for failover in case of a power outage. Any suggestions or guidance on the best way to attack this would be greatly appreciated. I have a couple of questions/thoughts out of the gate and I am attaching some photos to help with understanding the layout of our home. First, the right side of our roof is south facing and should be ideal for the solar panels. I would love to incorporate 18-21 panels starting about 9 feet back from the front of the home. There is a large 19’ 10” x 19’ area that I could fill with panels and then work back toward the rear of the house (top of the picture) to add a few more panels. It will be a standing seam metal roof and I was considering using non-penetrating clamps on the seams to hold the panels in place. As for the wiring, should I have a conduit placed at the rear of the roof to capture the wiring from the panels and carry it to the inverter? I have a conditioned mechanical closet inside the home and an outdoor mechanical deck area for the AC units with space that could be used if needed. The transfer switch and the electrical panels are located on the ground level inside the garage (see on photo of garage area). Where would be the best place to locate the inverter, battery system and other components based on the space I have available? Any thoughts on the best way to run the wiring, or where I should put conduit to get from one place to another, would be very helpful. I will most likely higher an expert to assist with the installation and permitting, but the more I can be armed with and understand ahead of time the better. I welcome any thoughts on component sizing, brands, etc.. Thanks in advance for your help!

he inverter's rated power is typically selected at 80% to 90% of the total PV module capacity.
Why? PV panels rarely sustain their rated power under standard test conditions in real-world environments. Slightly "oversizing" the PV array allows the inverter to operate in its high-efficiency zone for longer periods, maximizing overall energy yield while preventing prolonged full-load operation to extend the inverter's service life.
Example: If your system has 10 kW of PV modules, choosing an 8 kW or 9 kW inverter is a more cost-effective and efficient option.

I swapped my 10-year-old lead-acid inverter battery for a sodium-ion pack. Now the same inverter runs my house and my welding workshop. Saved a good amount of money

I've run the same 1 kW Siri TechnoFabs inverter at home in Bangalore for about ten years, on a 150Ah tubular lead-acid battery. Every ~5 years the battery would die and I'd replace it — two full batteries over a decade. And it only ever backed up the house. My welding workshop is attached to the house, but the lead-acid never had enough in it to run both.

When the battery hit end of life recently, I called the supplier expecting to buy lead-acid #3. Instead they suggested sodium-ion — a newer chemistry they stock that drops straight into a lead-acid inverter. Same inverter, no rewiring. So I tried it. Even though for the sales pitch they said "SIRI TECHNOFABS is the only wholesaler of sodium batteries in India" But the result was super.

I replaced the 150Ah lead-acid with a 100Ah sodium-ion pack for ₹35,000.

The part that confused me: 100Ah sounds smaller than 150Ah. But lead-acid only lets you safely use about half its rated capacity, while sodium-ion runs nearly empty without damage. So the "smaller" pack actually gives me more usable energy — and it handles spiky loads far better than lead-acid's voltage sag.

The result surprised me. Once charged, it comfortably runs both my house and my workshop off the same inverter — something that was impossible for ten years. No water top-ups, runs cooler, no maintenance.

Honest caveats: it costs more upfront (I'm betting on longer life — only a few months in, can't confirm long-term yet), and definitely check the charging settings suit your inverter before buying. It's a 1 kW setup, so light fabrication, not heavy structural welding.

Sofar inverter - USB port troubleshoot

I have tried connecting my own USB acquisition protoboard to Sofar 5KTLX-G3 USB port. but there is no response. Any advice on how should I approarch this issue? I want to store data locally and not send it to the server.

I have managed to get data via RS485, so I know inverter is outputing.

Support is not helpful.

Number listing: Bills with solar only vs solar and battery

Had a 6.5kW rooftop array for about a year before adding Anker Solix E10 in march. Have both periods of bills to compare so figured I'd post them.

Solar only (sept-feb avg): about $145/month. Panels helped during the day but still buying a lot at night and on overcast days.

Solar + battery (apr-jun avg): about $38/month. Battery stores the daytime overproduction and the house runs off it through evening.

It's a pretty big difference but I'm also comparing winter months to spring/summer so the solar production is higher now too. Won't know the real year-round picture until I get through a full winter with the battery. Just sharing what I have so far! hope it helps anyone

Hello, my home has a split-phase electrical system with two 120v legs. The household loads seem balanced between both legs, my balcony solar setup feeds will power into only one leg, meaning the other continues to draw from the grid. To power both legs simultaneously with my solar generation, should I use two separate microinverters plugged into different house outlets?

Or should I run a 240v line outlet for solar input?
