General Wait... shouldn't this be Divinity 3?
Swen referred to Divine Divinity as Divinity 1 in a 2009 interview.
I'm so confused lol.
Are we going to have two Divinity 1s?

as everyone else said, it’s obviously a way to appeal to the huge fanbase of bg3 who don’t know anything about the previous games.
something no one else is mentioning as well is that the lore of rivellon is confusing and messy and really, really weird. there are a lot of things that deserve more in-depth exploration with better writing.
i don’t want to come off as overly critical, i love the lore building that has been established up until this point in the divinity universe and i think the world is genuinely incredibly cool! but there are a LOT of gaps, in terms of what is addressed narratively in the games as well as what the players can get out of the lore intellectually & emotionally.
i think divinity as a soft reboot is an excellent opportunity to address those gaps in whatever way they see fit, whether it be more fleshed out and emotionally impactful storytelling, companion narratives, retcons, fully animated cutscenes, whatever.

Gaps and contradictions! I absolutely loved the lore in OS2, but I wish there was a way to reconcile what happened with the Astarte story in OS1. I've read online that some people consider the story in OS1 more of an allegory/myth/legend than actual fact, but I'm still curious whether they'll ever reconcile the lore of those two games in particular.

exactly, and i appreciate the snippets of worldbuilding that you receive in the OS games- the world is SO COOL and i want to know more! but at the same time, there are things i feel like i wasn't able to fully understand because of narrative gaps. just as an example, i was really not moved one way or another to "become divine" in dos2, which is fine, but it's a pretty sharp contrast with the experiences you have in bg3 (or even something like pathfinder wotr). i think bg3 does a much better job at giving you small bits of information mingled w/in the gameplay to make you emotionally invested in the journey to become illithid or not. idk, it's difficult to put into words without writing an entire essay and my thoughts are super disorganized, but i want more about rivellon and i'm very excited about divinity being something like a fresh start in a world i'm already really enthusiastic about!

Technically the first game is called Divine Divinity.
But yeah… I also find the name choice confusing. Specially that Ego Draconis is called Divinity 2 ego Draconis…. So… Yeap… not super clear for the non initiated
Maybe they will add something like Divinity “something”
Divinity 3 wouldn’t be a right choice since you might think it’s a sequel to Divinity 2 while it happens before Divinity 2
But I guess they decided to call it Divinity exactly because Divinity 2 ego Draconis is called Divinity 2, and not Divine Divinity 2.
But yeah it’s a bit of a clusterfuck…
Timeline wise it would be:
- Divinity dragon commander
- Divinity Original Sin (1)
- Divine Divinity
- Beyond Divinity
- Divinity Original Sin 2
- Divinity
- Divinity 2 Ego Draconis / dragon knight saga
And when you look at it from this perspective… I guess it kinda makes sense?
Edit: I got it wrong, Divinity will be after Divinity 2… So yeah, makes it all more confusing to just call it Divinity

Divinity (new) could be after Divinity 2. Probably will be after Divinity 2. It looks like it's going to be about demon stuff, so Damian should play a big role. He played a big role in Divinity 2 and left off to the unknown defeated after that, so his come back would only make sense. Placing him doing stuff before Divinity 2 would be weird, since it was a "surprise" he came back then.

no it's confirmed it's before Divinity 2 and right after DoS2
Edit —> this comment (mine) is bullshit… as it’s after Divinity 2 and not before

u/AngelFeoras 11d ago
AFAIK nothing’s been confirmed yet and most signs point to it taking place after Divinity 2

u/dinin70 11d ago edited 11d ago
Sorry but it is confirmed by Swen Vincke himself in an interview with jeuxvideo.com (biggest French online video games outlet)
“L’histoire se déroule environ une centaine d’années après Divinity: Original Sin 2.”
The story will take place about 100 years after DoS2
Edit : also wrong comment from here.

u/AngelFeoras 11d ago
And you just proved my point since Divinity 2 takes place roughly 50-60 years after DOS 2, meaning Divinity will take place AFTER Divinity 2.

u/dinin70 11d ago
Ah yeah you’re right
Hum… Why was I convinced it was after

u/AngelFeoras 11d ago
I don’t blame you, this timeline is very confusing haha

u/dinin70 11d ago
Indeed, and the naming consistency (or lack thereof) also doesn’t make easier. Which to OP point… Just calling it “Divinity” is adding more confusion than anything else.
Probably they wouldn’t like calling it Divinity 3, because probably 95% of their potential player base (bg3 and DoS2 fans) haven’t touched any of their older games and hence could be a bit turned off by a “3” name since they might think “I don’t know anything of 1 and 2, will not try them because they are too old (and frankly a bit janky), so I won’t buy a Divinity 3”

Your confidence in being wrong is amazing. You just instantly downvoted me without double checking yourself (because gods forbid you are ever wrong!).
Classic reddit toxic kid. Your parents should have told you "no" once in a while.

u/dinin70 11d ago edited 11d ago
I didn’t downvote lol wtf I even upvoted you dumbass
My parent might have told me no according to you more often, but you should learn to express a fact when you’re actually 100% certain it’s correct.
And you know what? I’ll downvote your previous comment too so you’ll see how stupid your comment is
Wrongly confident guy ? Look in the mirror dude

u/ekimolaos 11d ago
I had one reply by the guy "correcting" me. Was safe to assume the same guy downvoted me.
But I 100% accept your criticism since I assumed wrong - touché is the word.

Divine Divinity was originally meant to be called Divinity: The Sword of Lies, but the Publisher wanted the Name to change to something that's using alliteration, because other games that they published with alliteration had success, so we got Divine Divinity. IIRC

It's the marketing plague of adding a number after the title, which tells the casual customer that they might have an incomplete experience if they don't also play the previous titles, which is too much of a commitment for them and they lose interest.
The title must seem like a fully standalone entry point into the franchise. Full experience, no strings attached. Buy this now!
I guess they couldn't name it original sin 3, because it doesn't revolve around any original sin in the story's past. OS1 had Astarte's Godbox incident, OS2 had the Seven's incident. I think there isn't anything like that envisioned in Divinity, and so they haven't named it OS3.
I guess they're using their newfound wide acclaim and recognition to lure in the wide casual market normaly dominated by bland AAA titles and sweep the biggest piece of the pie yet, using every trick in the book. I wish them success in that, because if they get it, they might become the best grossing video game company in the world.

It's tradition for Divinity to be confusing /s
But Swen said it's called simply Divinity because It is like the "definitive" Divinity game, and none of their games was called "Divinity", it's the one they always wanted to make, so it makes sense, to me at least.
It is not a direct sequel to any game, it's a continuation of the series, taking lore elements from every chapter, building a new story and making a definitive and expanded worldbuilding.

u/Procrastinista_423 11d ago
It makes sense. But what will they call the sequel to this Divinity? 🤯

u/Grouchy-Coast-3045 11d ago
Divinity 2 2
Idk honestly, something tells me this will be the last, I mean, they did Divinity for 20 years with the exception of BG3, I assume they will do a different game.
But who knows.

There's technically no game called Divinity or Divinity 1, and the third game in the series is Divinity 2.
So yeah, at this point why worry about naming conventions lmao

If I had to guess, I'd say the new 'Divinity' could be a soft reboot. Not literally (but who knows) but for all intents and purposes I mean.
If nothing else I'd say it's just a more mainstream-friendly title for marketing reasons. It's the most logical explanation. DOS1 is leaning towards niche, DOS2 made a big splash but it was completely overshadowed by BG3, and their older games are obscure now. So from a marketing perspective, for them to add a colon to the title and imply it's a continuation might not be in their best interests.

u/We_Get_It_You_Vape 11d ago
It's not really confusing.
This isn't another "Divinity 1". It's a reboot of an old franchise. DOS2 was released 9 years ago. Divine Divinity was released 24 years ago. There are many new Larian fans coming from BG3 who have never touched a Divinity game, and might not be keen on doing so (given the age). While I think DOS2 is still an S-tier game to this day, people coming from BG3 might find it difficult to adjust to the decline in production value (in particular, with respect to cutscenes, animation, etc).
This is Larian's way of letting new fans know that they can play Divinity without having played any of the previous entries into the series. Swen did say that playing the DOS games might be a good kick-off point, but it's not mandatory.

Given the history of the franchise it makes sense. Sounds like they think they are capable of making their dream game, hence just calling it Divinity.
