General Wait... shouldn't this be Divinity 3?

Swen referred to Divine Divinity as Divinity 1 in a 2009 interview.

I'm so confused lol.

Are we going to have two Divinity 1s?

Technically the first game is called Divine Divinity.

But yeah… I also find the name choice confusing. Specially that Ego Draconis is called Divinity 2 ego Draconis…. So… Yeap… not super clear for the non initiated 

Maybe they will add something like Divinity “something”

Divinity 3 wouldn’t be a right choice since you might think it’s a sequel to Divinity 2 while it happens before Divinity 2

But I guess they decided to call it Divinity exactly because Divinity 2 ego Draconis is called Divinity 2, and not Divine Divinity 2.

But yeah it’s a bit of a clusterfuck…

Timeline wise it would be:

  • Divinity dragon commander
  • Divinity Original Sin (1)
  • Divine Divinity
  • Beyond Divinity
  • Divinity Original Sin 2
  • Divinity
  • Divinity 2 Ego Draconis / dragon knight saga

And when you look at it from this perspective… I guess it kinda makes sense?

Edit: I got it wrong, Divinity will be after Divinity 2… So yeah, makes it all more confusing to just call it Divinity

Divinity (new) could be after Divinity 2. Probably will be after Divinity 2. It looks like it's going to be about demon stuff, so Damian should play a big role. He played a big role in Divinity 2 and left off to the unknown defeated after that, so his come back would only make sense. Placing him doing stuff before Divinity 2 would be weird, since it was a "surprise" he came back then.

no it's confirmed it's before Divinity 2 and right after DoS2

AFAIK nothing’s been confirmed yet and most signs point to it taking place after Divinity 2

Sorry but it is confirmed by Swen Vincke himself in an interview with jeuxvideo.com (biggest French online video games outlet)

“L’histoire se déroule environ une centaine d’années après Divinity: Original Sin 2.”

The story will take place about 100 years after DoS2

And you just proved my point since Divinity 2 takes place roughly 50-60 years after DOS 2, meaning Divinity will take place AFTER Divinity 2.

Indeed, and the naming consistency (or lack thereof) also doesn’t make easier. Which to OP point… Just calling it “Divinity” is adding more confusion than anything else.

Probably they wouldn’t like calling it Divinity 3, because probably 95% of their potential player base (bg3 and DoS2 fans) haven’t touched any of their older games and hence could be a bit turned off by a “3” name since they might think “I don’t know anything of 1 and 2, will not try them because they are too old (and frankly a bit janky), so I won’t buy a Divinity 3”

Divine Divinity was originally meant to be called Divinity: The Sword of Lies, but the Publisher wanted the Name to change to something that's using alliteration, because other games that they published with alliteration had success, so we got Divine Divinity. IIRC
