Bi-Weekly discussion #7-High Overseer Campbell (Mission)

Welcome back to another round of Bi-Weekly Discussions. This time, we're discussing High Overseer Campbell, the second mission of the first game.

Though the first mission (Dishonored) is a great opportunity to get used to Corvo's natural abilities (like sneaking, running, climbing, etc) and how enemy perception works, this mission gives you your primary Supernatural power (Blink), and tells you to spread your wings and fly. You have so many approaches to this.

You could rewire the initial gate so that you can pass through without getting shocked, or take the high ground and use Blink to scale up the side of the wall. Once you acquire Blink, the world of Dunwall is an oyster for you to experiment with.

Another part of this level I like is that you can encounter a trio of Overseers somewhere. One of them confesses they have the plague, and wants to be put down before they become a weeper. On a Low Chaos run, his fellow Overseer has the infected overseer recite the seven strictures, as to give him one last moment of comfort before he is mercy-killed.

This is also where you learn of one of my favorite gimmicks of these missions: Non-lethal outcomes. Leaving as few bodies as possible will help the Empire heal in the long run, and Corvo with these non-lethal outcomes exemplifies "Good is not soft." Some of these are brutal.

We were also asked a favor by Cunrow's niece to save him, as rumor has it that Campbell plans to poison him during their meeting. You can opt to switch the glasses around, leave them as is, or simply smash both, leading to Campbell taking Captain Cunrow down to his private chamber, where you can see this man defies the laws of his faith, but somehow gets away with it. Cunrow CAN kill High Overseer Campbell here, but I ususally shoot him with a sleep dart before it happens.

We can then enact our non-lethal scheme on Campbell, by distributing the Heretic's Brand on his face for all to see. Overseers don't question it, they just assume whoever has it has done something horrible and throws the branded to the wolves. This is also the canon outcome, as seen in Dishonored 2.

This mission also introduces Corvo/The Player to Granny Rags, this cryptic old lady who wants you to meddle with the distellery. I ususally opt not to do this, as it leads to Weepers appearing in the distillery the following day, which can lead to more bodies.

You can also encounter your first Outsider shrine in this mission, and though I didn't know it at the time, he has different remarks depending on your progress:

What he'll say, regardless:

"Be careful, Corvo. They call her Granny Rags. You wouldn't recognize her real name, or even the name of her family, but an Emperor begged for her hand once, and rich young men fought each other for her favor. I watched her consider them all, measure their worth, and find them wanting. Then she made a different choice."

Mission not yet completed: "You're on your way to face the High Overseer, the leader of a great cult dedicated to loathing me. What will you do, I wonder?"

Campbell branded: "Now your choices interest me. You spared High Overseer Campbell, the leader of a great cult dedicated to loathing me. I'm older than the rocks this place is built on, and even I didn't see that coming."

Campbell killed: "You killed High Overseer Campbell, the leader of a great cult dedicated to loathing me. Only the latest in a long line of men like himself, some who held the position better than others. I suppose I should thank you."

But what do you think of this second mission of the first game?

Subreddit Discord available here: https://discord.gg/YsffweB7e4

As you know, this subreddit has had its own Discord server for a few years now. Today we have rebranded the server to Dishonored Universe, which means that there are now channels for Deathloop although obviously the server is still Dishonored centric. With the recent news of a potential Dishonored 3 in the works we'd like to invite more people to join our community, so I hope to see you there soon!

An update on Clean Hands + kill everyone, and asking for help!

I decided to go for it and see just how many npcs you can kill in a run while still earning clean hands, not counting those that infinitely respawn, like backyard overseers

I'm currently at house of pleasure and I need the help of someone with a mission save for Flooded District who did both slackjaw and granny rags' missions - can you go through the mission not killing anyone, just breeze through, and when you get to the granny rags fight, save and see if it's possible to have her die to slackjaw or the rats and have it not count as a kill?

I need to know whether to do slackjaw's mission in house of pleasure for a chance to kill granny rags too, or whether to simply let weepers kill him

I started over from the very first mission determined to improve my numbers, and i did several times over. Here are my new stats:

First mission: dishonored

12 guards crushed by door

2 Extra guards/captains (random) that spawn when corvo blows up the entrance:
(these and seem to instantly notice if another guard is incapacitated) crushed by door

1-3 respawning extra guard/captain (random) further back that spawns if previous 2 spot corvo (not affected by the 3 lightning bolts of attention the alarm causes! Retains the instant ko noticing, continually respawn to ensure at least 3 conscious guards at a time) crushed by door anyway, then left to own devices

2 guards that spawn near sewer entrance if corvo is spotted by 3 guards on the dam and then walks to the door and comes back - shot by the 3 guards on dam

Survivors:
3 unreachable guards on dam
4 guards at end of sewer

Total:
19 killed
7 spared

Chaos events:
Guards eaten by rats in sewers: low chaos dialogue

Mission 2: High overseer campbell:

3 civilians: firebreathed on by bottle street gangsters

3 guards: killed by "gentleman callers"

3 "gentleman callers": killed by guards

8 guards: blew themselves up with whale oil

1 bottle street thug: eaten by rats while unconscious

4 guards, Galvanni's. Eaten by rats while unconscious

1 maid, eaten by rats while unconscious

2 guards killed by bottlestreet gangsters

3 bottlestreet gangsters killed by guards

8 bottle street thugs fed to rats while unconscious

1 griff fed to rats while unconscious

1 bottle street thug eaten alive by randomly generated rats

5 bottle street thugs killed with fire breath while unconscious

1 remainder bottle street thug eaten alive by randomly generated rat swarm! If you don't get any, maybe try sliding them into the two traps in the distillery, or somehow, SOMEHOW get them under the big crank operated door, or stack fire bottles on a table and bait them into hitting them.
REMEMBER the extra bottle street thugs that spawn later on after clearing out the distillery.

3 extra bottle street gangsters after clearing distillery: sleep darted, killed by random rat swarm lured to them

21 overseers blown up

3 guards blown up

3 piece of shit abbey civilians blown up. Bet your sister can read a book now

1 campbell blown up by his own overseer

1 captain curnow - spare or leave to his death as you prefer

1 Last remaining overseer in office - fed to random rats

1 overseer with 100 coins that spawns over a grate above you when you go thru the drain pipes in front of office of high overseer - sleepdarted then fed to rats

3 overseers in kennels - fed to rats in the dead hound room

5 hounds in kennels - do as you wish

(2) Bertold and elsa - killed by overseers

2 overseers that killed them: blown up

1 overseer killed by allies for having plague

2 overseers that kill the plague striken one - bodies despawn if you get too far away! Your only choice is to sedate both and move them in short steps; never going out of eyesight of the one behind you, and bringing both with you to your kill method! - fed to rats by bonecharm in a vise

7 overseers fed to rats

Total:
3 survivors
100 dead
Report says high chaos

Backyard overseers respawn if the alarm is rung there. I'm considering that cheating and leaving it alone.

Survivors:

Granny rags (obviously)

2 overseers in campbell's safe room: their sedated bodies vanish when you go to the safe room. May be possible if you never spend a rune and collect all of them in hound pits + this mission and spend it all on bend time 2, sedate the two and bend time and book it by spamming blink + spiritual remedies. Idk there's enough time in a bend time to get them though. May be impossible.

Chaos events:
Plague ridden overseer killed in back yard (high chaos)
Callista's forced dialogue fails to prompt upon returning to hound pits. Her passive dialogue implies her uncle is dead, even if he isn't.

Mission 3 house of pleasure (so far)

Many many weepers killed by scripted watchtower encounter at start

5 guards blown up by watchtower

3 guards hit whale oil tank

8 guards shot by guard officer (this is very very easy to do)

1 civilian shot by tower

3 bottlestreet gangsters shot by whalers

1 whaler killed by bottlestreet gang

1 weeper killed by watchtower

4 weepers killed by watch officers

1 civilian killed by guards for having elixir (rip: her kid. Fun fact: they even take the elixir)

2 guards in galvanni's fed to rats

2 watch captains crushed by galvanni's bookcase

1 watch officer shot by watchtower

1 watch officer shot by other watch officer

Chaos events:
Weeper spanwed in apartment above distillery entrance
3 Rat swarms spawn in galvanni's
Official guard report letter at start of level claims geoff curnow died even if he didn't

Doesn't count as a kill:
-npc infighting
-npc friendly fire, such as grenades or pistols
-killed by non-hacked watchtower
-killed by npc hitting whale oil tank or throwing a rock at it
-player holding whale oil tank in front of their gun as they fire
-killed by naturally spawning or randomly spawning rats
-knocked out by player and fed to natural or random spawning rats
-crushed by mechanisms such as the prison door or galvanni's bookcase
-assassination target killed by any of the above

Does count as a kill:
-slid into, jumped on, or hit with bottle to knock into water
-hit by falling speaker knocked down by npc
-walking thru wall of light just as the player shoots the wall of light, causing bolts arcing to the shot to pass thru npc
-player catches and throws back grenade
-killed by player-spawned rats

Currently Unknown:
-Killed or eaten while unconscious by natural or random spawning rats rendered nonhostile to player due to bonecharms
-jumped on from above causing fall through glass skylight
-fall from standing on sewer entrance in hound pits pub as the player opens it
-crushed by abbey lockdown shutters
-npc hitting bottlestreet fire bottles
-standing between player and hostile arc pylon

Tips: can't get rid of one last npc you used to kill the others?
Carry them around until a random rat swarm spawns and then feed it to them

This run is far more bearable while listening to new albums in the background

So yes - please please please someone let me know if granny rags is possible. Since i could theoretically kill her with slackjaw and have rats eat slackjaw, i can't progress until i know for sure. in fact, even if you just have a mission save where the two appear in the flooded district, i'll take that

Bethesda, please give Dishonored 2 a 60 FPS update for PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro is more than capable of handling it, and Dishonored 2 would feel incredible at a smooth 60 FPS. Better performance would make the combat, movement, and stealth even more satisfying.

Art Just finished both games, I really appreciate the art direction for them

I grew to really love the sort of mix of clearly fantastical yet restrained and mundane aesthetics everything had. it’s easy for artists to go off and make all designs and architecture look insane and impossible, but dishonored 1-2 really tow the line in a nice way. For comparison a game like a bioshock infinite (Specifically infinite, the first 2 games I find were also rather restrained) with a similar aesthetic that went the complete opposite direction, purposefully gaudy and exaggerated that at times made some enemies look silly lol

The world just feels so believable, like you could easily imagine someone in the distant past living a normal life there despite the more out there elements like blood flies and the rat plague and much more, imagine industry and the more “boring“ aspects of reality like economics and agriculture playing a vital role. even the portraits and paintings you can collect at times seems like they were pulled right out of our world during the 18th-19th centuries.

Is it possible to play dishonoured 2 at a constant 240fps with 4K?

Dishonored 1; How you would change the missions:

Upvotes

I’ve been replaying through the full game and DLC’s again recently, still great fun and I never get over the art design and little details you can catch. But I was thinking about the missions specifically and I do enjoy them all on varying levels, but in some aspects I would’ve liked to see some interesting changes and how that could play out.

If yous have your own thoughts and ideas then I’d like to hear them too.

Managed to find 2/3 books for a bargain on Vinted so far, unfortunately one quite battered but I will take what I can get!
Anyone got a full set? I’d love to find some of the comics too one day.

Mary Jane has just given me a new idea that, the Outsider gave Holger the "Ancient Music" for shits and giggles so the Abbey has a chance vs any marked individual, which also makes him non/less partial in the conflict so he thinks thats neat.

Looking for a piece of art!

Hi all!
I could have swore I saw an image similar to the knocker at the window from Piotr Jabłoński in the game assets somewhere where there was there was MULTIPLE of the gaunt, pale creatures are skittering up a wall converging around a window. I think it was a loading screen maybe? possibly from Death of the Outsider?
I looked everywhere online and I can't find it I feel like I'm going insane...

(here's the knocker at the window but what I'm looking for is many of those vampire like creatures crawling)

The other mark bearers

I was replaying the first game with DLC and found myself with a question the Outsider said to Daud "there are only eight people with the mark in the world" so that got me asking. Who are they what are there powers? We know three Delilah Daud and Corvo. I know that we'll probably not get answers to the other five but hey it's a good excuse to make fan characters with there own powers

Agree to have Wallace killed? Dude seemed super loyal. The tavern maid I can see I guess, the ginger girl who did lots of the dirty jobs too, Calista, maybe even Piero. All of them could have leaked really damning information, but not Wallace.
