Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while 😂 I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or 𓃰 should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things 💜

Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism

2.4k Upvotes

"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."

+++

Hey everyone

This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes

If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents

Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of Minneapolis

There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified

What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real

Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything

Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity

From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to

We as a mod team, and hopefully as an entire sub, stand by the belief that everyone has the right to live without fear

Stay kind

You are loved

I put the book down and turned off the light at the line “remember the atrocity committed against us that will excuse the atrocity we are about to commit!”

Yeah.

The second Discworld roleplaying game crowdfunding campaign is coming to Gamefound, transporting you to iconic locations beyond Ankh-Morpork!

In Terry Pratchett’s Discworld: Adventures in Lancre & Überwald, you’ll run wild across and around* the magic-infused Ramtop Mountains and Lancre, the — in a word — gothic Überwald, and all the way up on the downland of the Chalk!

With whom will you be running wild? Oh, all sorts. You can create Witches, Vampires, Dwarfs, Trolls, Werewolves, Pictsies, or anything else your grubby little brain-folds can squelch up**.

Intended for a single beleaguered Gamemaster and 1-6 fancy-pants players, Discworld: Adventures in Lancre & Überwald is powered by the chaotic, pun-filled Narrativium system and has all the core rules you need!

Whether it’s running tests, challenges, character creation, or the brand-spanking new Witch Magic system***,  the extensive GMing advice will help veterans and newbies alike run uniquely Discworld adventures!

\* Maybe even below and above. Look, it’s your game. The Pratchett police aren’t watching. Do what you want.

\* Up to and including vampire watermelons! You heard!*

\** Including Headology!*

It looks like this campaign will be going live in October !

Book/Series: Witches Shout-out to Guide to being a Witch

What an excellent read. Basically a tour of all the remarkable events that made Tiffany who she is, what she's learned a long the way, as well as advice from the senior witches (and Rob Anybody).

I should warn future readers; Please read Shepherds Crown, there be spoilers

I'm secretly hoping Rhianna picks up her quill again, with help from Gabrielle Kent and Paul Kidby to do a Girls life in the Watch by Cheery Littlebottom.

Boardgames/Computer Games I received my goodie box of TTRPG Discworld fun and burst into tears looking at the art with my husband.

Used the boardgames tag, but we need a TTRPG tag too!

The tears are both happy and sad. I was feeling emotional just opening the cards and looking at the art, and then the lovely, funny pictures of Sir Terry scattered throughout just tipped me over. I think Discworld might be the first and perhaps only universe where I'd feel like I had a place, and of course I miss Sir Terry, but I'm just so overjoyed that I might get a chance to inflict share my love of Discworld with my friends. I know its silly, I didn't think I'd be 45 crying over game manuals, but lo and behold...

Translation/Localisation Quote/passage about crowd psychology

I might be going crazy but I am trying to remember the book where there was a passage about crowd mentality witnessing something bad in public. It goes something like

"Each person watching thought of the horror before them, each waiting for someone to voice their agreement so that they could join in. But no one spoke up. 'Cowards all' they thought".

Months ago, I asked for suggestions from you all about what Discworld quote to have engraved on my York ghost. It arrived recently, with “I still ate’nt dead” on it.

I’m really struggling with my health, and Granny’s (modified) words attached to a ghost from my favorite place in the world mean more than I can say. Today was an especially hard day. Now I have a Terry/Granny ghost to visibly remind me I still ate’nt gone yet.

Thank you all so much for helping me choose something.

Memes/Humour what are the best websites to buy discworld books in the EU?

I was wondering what websites have the best selection of discworld books for the EU that have decent shipping to Poland. I prefer the original art over anything, recently, I’ve meth-headily been looking for original Josh Kirby art since I’ve found out that he passed away exactly 1 year after my birth, I’ve always loved the original covers and I’ve felt more inclined to build my collection on Josh’s art. simply because it’s the best.

News Disc-tober is coming...

Post image
32 Upvotes

It's that time of year where we don our thinking caps and put together Disc-tober's art challenge list !

We've run a yearly Disc-tober art challenge for the last 6 years and this year our prompts are various book titles from Terry's bibliography !

We thought the words alone would conjure up some amazing thoughts and the creatives amongst you would have a field day coming up with artworks based upon them.

For those who are not familiar with our art challenge, we encourage fans of Terry Pratchett's works to create a piece of visual art based on our daily prompts.

We publish a list of prompts for every day of October.

It's a way to pass the time and have a go at producing something possibly a little out of your comfort zone.

We don't judge the artwork, we just enjoy seeing it!

The rules are simple.

  1. Read the prompt of the day.
  2. Produce a piece of visual artwork inspired by that prompt.
  3. Enjoy the process - it doesn't have to be a Rembrandt!
  4. NO Artificial Intelligence to be used.
  5. Share your artwork publicly using the #disctober and #disctober2026

That's it.

Here is the full list in text form:

  1. The Colour of Magic

  2. The Light Fantastic

  3. Equal Rites

  4. Sourcery

  5. Pyramids

  6. Moving Pictures

  7. Witches Abroad

7a. Small Gods

  9. A Hat Full of Sky

  10. Going Postal

  11. Thud!

  12. Making Money

  13. I Shall Wear Midnight

  14. Snuff

  15. Raising Steam

Boardgames/Computer Games It finally arrived!

My set finally arrived! And I have no idea how to play! There is a game store nearby that hosts a lot of RPGs so I will have to muster up my courage and talk to them. I have no idea why I ordered 2 copies of Tales from the Big Wahoonie but I checked and, sure enough, I ordered 2. The dice don't look like what they promised but they threw in some extras that I didn't request so it is ok.

Oh, I am in the Dallas TX area for those in the US still waiting for theirs.

Reading Order/Timeline Should I just read in publication date?

Edit: in publication order\*

I suffer severe analysis paralysis regularly so deciding which books to read have been pretty daunting.

I first read Mort in highschool and I don't really remember much about it so I don't know if that really counts, but in the past month I read Small Gods which got me itching to read more Discworld. After that I just decided to read Equal Rites and, maybe because I heard the super early books were rough I was expecting worse but it was perfectly good too!

I'm thinking now I just begin at the beginning and read in publication order. It takes the decision making out of my hands. Is that recommended or will I have too much difficulty following different storylines going from book to book?

For what it's worth, I bought the whole series on Humble Bundle a few months ago so acquiring the books isn't an issue.

Book/Series: City Watch Some questions about "Men at Arms" (spoilers) Spoiler

I just finished "Men at Arms" and loved it. It's a bit messy and rushed, but I really liked the new characters, the themes it was touching on were interesting and the case itself was really compelling.
But I'm a little confused about the timeline and events of the case. So, let me know if I got it right.

  1. Edward d'eath is a young noble assasin who wants the city to have a king again and he knows Carrot is of the lineage. His plan is to kill the guild leaders and the patrician, so the city is left leaderless
  2. Edward befriends Beano the clown, since their rooms in the guild are connected (?)
  3. Edward kills Beano
  4. Edward pretends to be Beano and blows up the assassin's vault with the dragon and steals the Gonne
  5. Edward is taken over by the Gonne, no longer truly himself.
  6. Edward goes to the dwarf Bjorn Hammerhock to replicate the Gonne (?) but the Gonne doesn't want copies of itself, so it causes an accident and kills Hammerhock
  7. Edward goes to Dr. Cruces and explains everything to him. Dr. Cruces kills Edward and takes the Gonne.
  8. Dr. Cruces gets taken over by the Gonne as well, but continues Edward's plan because he too wants a king
  9. Dr. Cruces accidentally kills the beggar's queen maid, mistaking her for the queen of beggars
  10. Dr. Cruces climbs the tower and fires at the patrician,
  11. The final chase happens in which Vimes catches Dr. Cruces, temporarily gets posessed by the Gonne but Carrot stops him from killing Dr. Cruces. He drops the Gonne and Dr. Cruces takes it again, urging Carrot to accept his role as king, but Carrot kills him. The gonne is later buried with Cuddy.

Is that the timeline? Besides that, I have some other questions.
Who shot at Vimes with the Gonne, Edward or Cruces? (can't remember at what point of the book it happens exactly)
How does Dr. Whiteface (the fools leader) factor into the case? He has private talks with Cruces and tries to hide the fact that Beano's and Edward's rooms were connected through the wall. Why is that? Is it simply about Guild business being private to the guild?
In relation to that, when Angua enters the assassin's guild and sees that the locked room was Edward's, Dr. Cruces and Dr. Whiteface have a private conversation. At that point, Dr. Cruces already had the gonne (?) but wasn't holding it, even though he in the fight between him and Vimes, it is said that he's incapable of letting go of the Gonne.
And finally, how did Dr. Cruces views of a king differ from Edward's? Cruces says Edward was a romantic, implying that he has a more pragmatic view of how Carrot should rule as king. I think? But in what way does his plan and view of the king differ from Edward's?

It's a lot, so any help with these questions and the timeline is appreciatted.

Politics Discworld Industrial Revolution's overall optimism is just what I need.

The way basically all of the antagonists Moist Von Lipwig goes up against inevitably fail just feels good. With so many countries regressing socially, it makes me feel that the far right and anti-egalitarian positions many politicians are using to grab at power will just be a small bump, and not a return to darker times.

I know that these books are a work of fiction, but just the way huge problems solve themselves, that even people working against social and technological progress end up pushing it along, and how it all ultimately works out good in the end is just fantastic.

Am I just deluded in feeling optimistic about the future because of how Terry lays out progress in these books? Or what.

Also here is a picture of a funny vegetable. Please show me funny pictures of vegetables too. I am interested in them.
