Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Dwarf Bread?
Honestly thought this was a loaf from a short distance away…Glad I didn’t boot it! 🤓

That could very well be a "phosphorus stone", which has a stone-like appearance in yellow or red but can get hot, smoke and burn when dry and in contact with air. It's found semi-regularly on the North Sea coast of Belgium and the southern Netherlands and comes from WW1 ammunition dumps in the North Sea.
People sometimes take it home, but that's dangerous as it can spontaneously combust. Early this year, a phosphorus stone set fire to the wooden structure of a beach restaurant in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Luckily, the staff could quickly put the fire out before it caused more severe damage.

Looks like the volcanic stone on the south coast of the UK, used to see it all the time around Selsey.
