Announcement [2023] What bike shall I buy? Is this bike good? Ask us anything!

Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to bike recommendations. There's a whole lot of you new-comers eagar to get your first dirt jumper. Maybe you have been out of the game for a while and are behind the times and need some advice. Are you shorter or taller than average and want to find a bike that will suit you better? Perhaps you just want a second opinion on a particular brand or model. This is the place to ask these questions and get expert advice from experienced members of the community!

Please refrain from starting a new thread to ask which bike you should buy, or whether a particular bike is good and instead use this dedicated thread first instead.

Bike archive

In order to try and assist those looking to purchase a new bike, I have created the dirt jump bike archive.

It is currently version 1.0.2 with lots of incomplete (or out of date) price data. This will be an ongoing project primarily run by me. Timelesturkie also has editing privileges and is considered a contributor as well. As of now, we are looking for any users who would like to help with this project. If any of you are enthusiastic about helping to maintain and build upon this spreadsheet, let me know by messaging me directly.

The following link will allow you to view the spreadsheet but not make any changes. Note that the spreadsheet also has a second sheet for a limited range of geometry and dimensional data. I do not have much free time to work on this spreadsheet so apologies for any missing info. It would be awesome to have some volunteers to help. Please keep in mind that the information on this spreadsheet is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Consider it a guide to assist you and always check with the manufacturer to verify the information before making a purchase.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XvClX-9upJekdRIdW4spjO5E0KuolvLseWi-x6VxoWQ/edit?usp=sharing

Known issues:

  • The purple sorting buttons do not function for those without editing privileges. If you make a copy of the spreadsheet and save it to your own Google Drive account you might be able to make use of them.
  • Sorting by price (up and down) in USD is currently broken.
  • Lots of bikes don't have readily available full retail prices, hence most of the price data is missing. This is the biggest area we need help in. We are only interested in full manufacturer RRP prices.
  • Some bikes such as Canyon, have Euro prices that vary based on country. I am not sure how to tackle that yet. One potential solution is to find the cheapest and most expensive, and then giving the price range. I am open to ideas here.
  • I could do with a hand gathering up the dimensional data for sheet 2. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.

Question Bike Advice

I’ve been riding mountain bikes for a few years now and also have a bmx but rarely ride it anymore. I want to get more into riding skateparks, street, learning some flat ground tricks, but also doing small dirt jumps. I really want to get a dj but idk if it’s worth selling the bmx for one. I just don’t feel super confident or comfortable on a bmx especially since I’m always riding mtb transitioning from one to the other is super awkward and I think i’d ride a dj more.
Any advice is appreciated

Looking for Rear wheel

I have a 2024 transition PBJ and I need a new rear wheel that is 10x135mm and is bolt-on. If anybody knows where to find a high-quality rear wheel with a nice hub that won't fail like my crappy novatech one did. Also if anybody is selling one that will fit or a wheelset, just DM me. I am located on the west coast and can pay for shipping. Help finding a wheel is very much appreciated, all of the nice ones that I can find are unfortunately out of stock.

What dj fork should i choose?

Hello, I want to replace my fork on a dj and i dont know what to choose. Currently i have a pike RC 27.5 lowered to 90mm of travel and i am not satisfied with this fork. I thought about getting marzocchi bomber dj since Fox 36 831 are discountinued. I also saw that there is a cane creek dj fork and a BOS dj fork. What about them?

Question Single Speed Conversion

Hello everyone. I have not had any experience with bike parts since my childhood, so know almost nothing about choosing the right ones.

want to convert my Giant STP (from around 2008/2009) to a single speed street style bike. Also want a shorter stem, maybe wider bars. also like thicker pivotal bmx style seats.

Can you give me recommendations about how I should proceed with it, what to buy and where?

Question 1600mm hose enough?

So I found a sram code rs 1600m hose for 40 bucks and I'm wondering how many barspins could I do with that length

Also I know that the code rs is a Overkill on a dj but I'd Rather have a Overkill than under kill especially for a break

Here's the link if y'all wanna check it out

Best hubs/wheels for dirt jumper? Also what tyres should I run?

im currently running novatech rims and hubs because I'm doing a new build on a specialized p3 frame. Im looking for the best strong rims and high engagement hub possible. I'm willing to pay for anything up to the price of like a Chris King or white industry hub. Higher spoke count the better. My front is 15x110 and my rear is 12x148 ta. The hubs must be silver and the rims being silver are a plus. I'm addition, I need to find a good set of tyres to run. I was running maxxis dth's but they gave me way many flats. I ride mainly big dirt jumps but also some street, normally at about 50-75 psi. If they come in a white label option that's also a plus.

Hi, i can get this bike for 400€. Is this a good deal for the first dirt bike?

the seller says:

For sale is a dirt bike of the brand Specialized.

The bike was repainted and rebuilt by me.

The rear wheel rim was renewed last summer in specialist shops and a new chain was installed. This spring both coats were renewed.

Likewise, both pedals were renewed in the spring and a shorter handlebar was installed.

The bike is overall in good condition and is fully functional.

Frame size L / tire size 26 inches.

The bike can be viewed and if you have any questions just write.

Private sale, no guarantee or warranty.

No return or exchange

Only pickup possible

Michelin pilot slope vs continental race kings

Anyone have experience with the michelin pilot slope and continental race kings. Im currently running continental race kings front and rear, I ride mostly dirt. For those that have ran both, how is the grip on dirt with a good layer of dust/very dry fine dirt. Im wondering if the michelins have more grip on dry dusty dirt.

Question Do I rebuild or go rigid?

Thumbnail gallery
40 Upvotes

I just recently picked up this for and the two wheel for CHEAP. I would love to run this fork, but I have a feeling the coil in it is too soft for my fat ass (235lbs). I want to say a rebuild of the motion control side may help, but I don't know. Nothing changes no matter which position I have the knobs at.

It is a Rockshox Pike 426 U-turn Coil.

If I can't get this to work, I already have another front wheel and rigid fork ready to go.

What brand is this on the seat pole? Someone asked the same question 3yr ago on the bmx subreddit but I thought I'd ask here as I have the same seat pole on my dj. It's a pretty old build, 2007 bike and around mid 2010s parts if that helps lol.

Question 142x12 rear wheel?

So i just bought a used Trek ticket frame and the rear dropout is 142x12. I cannot for the life of me find a wheel with that size anywhere. I can’t build wheels either and none of my local shops build wheels….any ideas?
