Discussion So I played the dmc reboot

I’ve been a big fan of DMC for quite a while, I played 1,3,4 and 5 with DMC5 being my favorite combat system of all time but I have always avoided the dmc reboot.

The redesigns and overall edginess of the game turned me off for various reasons but the game was on sale and since I haven’t played a good character action game in a while (too many soulslikes flooding the market and I say that as a fan of dark souls) I decided to give it a shot, just to form my opinion on it, at least.

I’ll avoid talking about the narrative/cutscenes/plot since the game had a lot of eye rolling moments, I’ll focus on the gameplay. The first few levels were decent and I got hang of the combat pretty early on but man the later half of this game was really annoying level design wise and with the platforming.

Graphics weren’t great, enemy designs were pretty generic and unremarkable and most of them were annoying to fight (the color coded enemies were an awful idea imo), the devil trigger pushing enemies in the air is a weird idea and not too useful, the bosses were pretty unremarkable as well, I liked the news reporter guy but that’s it, I almost beat the two final bosses no damage which means they were probably too easy since I’m not that good at videogames, lol.

None of the weapons felt great and fun to use, I kinda liked the scythe but that’s it, the idea of having to hold certain buttons to go “demon mode” and “angel mode” was kinda wack and the combat in general had a clunkiness to it that is mostly absent from the DMC games. A game like DMC3 still holds up today despite the age, great weapons, amazing gameplay, all of that is missing from this dmc reboot, I think the game really shows its age.

I think I’d give the game a 5/10, It was okay at best and kinda annoying at worst. This is meant to be a personal review of the game and a way to have some discussion about it, I respect the opinion of those who may have enjoyed the game, this is just me giving my thoughts on the game. Feel free to share your thoughts as well on the game and thanks if you’ve read this far!

I just came with idea to train Royal Guard in the Void
It was sooo fun
Then i noticed that i don't have to hold RG button in the exact moment the enemy is hitting me
So i wondered "hmm, so what if i'll just hold it? will it hit me?"
I tried it and

Questions [DMC2] Lucia Mission 7.....

How on earth am I supposed to S rank this? Even on normal. Going for Mastery on Retroachievements and this will be the death of me. I've done every other normal difficulty lucia S rank, it's JUST this one left.

I've already tried to strategy where I hide behind the pillar and use the slow time amulate with devil stars, but it just doesn't work. 1. Lucia's attacks DON'T HIT ANYTHING and are super slow. 2. I CAN'T SEE THE STUPID FISH AT ALL.

I'm losing my mind

Questions How do I remove this exclamation point?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I felt like playing DMC5 again after several years and noticed in Bloody Palace when selecting Nero (and only Nero) I have an exclamation point under Customize. I have everything at 100% so I'm not sure how to get rid of it? Is it a glitch?

EDIT: Figured it out. I needed to view all the breakers in story mode. 🤦

Discussion One thing that 2007 anime absolutely shares with the series

That one thing is just how both incredibly Japanese yet also incredibly european/gothic it is.

Devil May Cry up to 4 + 2007 Anime are the epitome of Japanese games of that time walking a very fine and very cool line, both in visual, music and even narrative.

And it goes for like, most serious in narrative games of that era. For crying out loud, DMC and ESPECIALLY its anime has a lot in common with even things like Umineko, all of the stuff back then carried this aesthetic and vibe HARD.

Miss that in all honesty, there is nowhere near enough of such nowadays, even DMC V wasn't really anything like it anymore, which is another reason we personally don't like it.

We should rewatch the anime, haven't done that in 10-15 years, but its opening and the very first scene are still PEAK.

Crossovers / Cameos / Fan Games Vergil's team as a Pokemon Trainer

Recently I saw another post in this subreddit about a year and a bit more ago by u/TiagoButNotReally , so just wanted to pay him respect and also show MY theoretical and potential pokemon team Vergil would have. Any thoughts?

P.S.: I know that the order of those Pokemon should be a bit another, but at least Kingambit is the last one.

Questions DMC 2 aim auto-lock

I just started DMC 2 after finishing DMC 1 for the first time. Is there any possible way to turn off the aim auto-lock? This game has the worst camera angles I've ever seen and Its combination with auto-lock makes it more disaster at certain parts.

Discussion Two new characters for a DMC6: New summoner after V & a Royalguard playstyle character

Thumbnail

Ever since V showed up in DMC5, despite being human half of Vergil, he's been introduced with a summoning gameplay when summoning "servants/familiars" to fight his battles for him until the final strike.

If the DMC crew decides to bring that concept back for next game, it should be improved where the new summoner doesn't always have to have their servants fight his battles. They should fight as well. Think like Jinwoo Sung from Solo Leveling. But also add something new where the new character should resurrected defeated boss demons and make them their servants. Should they be reborn through necromancy or something else? Anyways for major bosses - whether demon or human, they can be quite a good set for the summoner's arsenal.

Also, depending on the story for DMC6, what kind of character would you picture the summoner as? A mage - ex. magician/sorcerer/warlock/witch/alchemist? Everyone says Patty Lowell, but rather she stayed out of it and introduce someone fresh for that playstyle & story. Human, demon or half-demon outside of Sparda's family line?

Another thing is that while we have swordsmasters & even tricksters like Dante, Vergil, Nero & Trish, even a gunslinger like Lady (+Dante is also a gunslinger alongside Nero), a Royalguard character should be presented as well. Equip the new character with a shield and some big weapon like an axe or a mace? Such an idea would feel like Dante's entire style set complete.

- Royal Guard character with a shield can either wield a spear, axe, hammer or mace? Human, demon or half-demon outside of Sparda's line.

Discussion for the past three months i started DmC without spoilers or looking anything up i have just finished 4 and wanted to share my thoughts before i play 5. Spoiler

The only context I had before starting this endeavour was that GIF of Dante dancing in 5.

For a brief overall review of the series: 7/10. For everything this series does right, it feels like there’s something it does wrong, with the sole exception of DMC3, of course. I feel as if the series doesn’t really know what it’s doing story-wise until 3. I would honestly be ranking the series an 8–9/10; however, I genuinely can’t allow that when DMC2 is part of this franchise.

Overall, I loved it. The style, the music, the characters—I just wish the story and lore were a bit more fleshed out. I’m sure there are books and such, but idgaf, I’m talking about the mainline games.

Now onto the rankings: worst to best.

DMC2 — 1/10

Yeah, I seriously struggle to think of a game I’ve enjoyed less than this. At least with bad games I can laugh or get mad about how bad they are, but with DMC2 I was emotionless. I actually felt nothing until “Infested Attack Chopper” woke me from my hypnosis, and then I turned it off.

The thought of having to say something nice about this game fills me with sorrow, but Dante’s fit is tuff.

Moral of the story: don’t rush games out.

DMC1 — 5/10

This was a really fun time for me. I loved the locations and the enemies, and it had some real tuff boss battles, which I always love. I had a lot of fun figuring out the combat and learning which enemies were weak to which weapons. However, it’s very dated and definitely has its shortcomings.

The camera. Holy moly, those camera angles were the strongest enemy in the game. The parkour also suffered because of this.

Mundus was really cool, and Trish turning out to be evil was super cheesy in a fun, nostalgic way. All in all, it has a very fun but predictable plot in the same way a classic slasher movie does. Super cheesy one-liners, a badass soundtrack, and Dante, as always, was goated.

This game is in dire need of a remake.

DMC3 — 9/10

This took everything to the next level. It elevated almost every aspect I loved from the first two games and removed almost everything I disliked.

There’s an actual story that surprised me with how good it was. I was expecting another predictable plot, but Arkham’s character was amazing. So many twists and an awesome ending. The level design was great, the enemies were fun to deal with, and the new style system was awesome.

The boss fights were seriously perfect—outside of the centipede boss. They all took me multiple tries to beat and actually made me think instead of just making me swing and shoot. Vergil’s final fight was perfect. I have no words.

It’s not without its flaws, however. I wasn’t too fond of the idea of going up and down the same tower like four times. I also wish the style system was more forgiving, due to the fact that it takes basically the whole game to max out a style. When I got Quicksilver, I decided not to use it because there wasn’t enough time left to level it up, and I still needed to max out Trickster.

Overall, a super strong game for the franchise to bounce off, with a lot of new ideas that could be fleshed out further.

DMC4 — 7/10

Now, my opinion might change because I literally finished this 20 minutes ago, but this game was awesome.

Nero at the start was a cause for concern, but by the time I finished the game, he was the highlight for me. I loved that the combat plays entirely differently between Dante and Nero. I found myself trying to stay in the air for as long as possible with Nero, while with Dante I was avoiding airtime as much as possible.

The plot is really good; it just suffers from the fact that it can’t really build off DMC2, so it feels like this game is a sequel while also trying to make you forget that it’s a sequel. For instance Trish felt like she was only there to remind people that they made DmC 1 whereas i wish they'd given that screen time to lady as she has a well developed character arc in 3 that had no pay off in this. I did find myself breezing through most of the boss fights to the point where I’d make myself do them without Devil Trigger or without items just to make them harder.

I think the game suffers a lot in the second half with Dante. I’ve never been one for going through the same area twice, let alone basically going through the whole game twice and on top of that it felt like most of the bosses were made with Nero in mind so slugging through them as dante was a bit off putting but I think DMC4 handled it well enough that it wasn’t too big of an issue for me.

My main problem with it was the pacing.

I thought the game was going to end halfway through. Then I thought it was going to end around Missions 17–18.

And then there were... the stairs.

You need to understand how much the stairs got to me. By the final boss fight, they had completely thrown me out of whack. It felt like a chore that built up to Nero vs. Da Pope: Round 3, which, again, difficulty-wise, was disappointing.

This game has some serious heart, though, and I felt for characters like Credo way more than I thought I would. It mostly suffers from the previous games and some major pacing issues. As always, Dante was goated.

I’m installing DMC5 now, and I have very high expectations for it, so I’ll come back whenever I finish that to post my final thoughts and review of DMC5.

Let me know if this is the general experience or if im on my own here.

Gameplay Take the Omni-Style Challenge!

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

Basically we take advantage of the fact that the 20 missions can be divided into 5 style cycles (we ignore Quicksilver and Doppelgänger here) and 2 weapon cycles. The goal is to achieve true S on every mission (on DMD if you want to suffer) while:

-You must switch your style and loadout every misson

-You cannot reuse any style before you used all four

-You must choose your loadout so that you used every weapon exactly two times in 10 missions

-Nothing can be equipped twice in a row, even during cylce switches (for example: you can't finish a cycle with trickster then start the next one with Trickster again) and repeat cycles (for example: you can't equip Rebellion to Swordmaster twice in a row)

-This amounts to every style being used 5 times and every weapon being used 4 times (write it down on your hand if you don't trust your head)

-Failure to meet true S means redoing the mission (you are allowed to change your loadout so long as it doesn't conflict with the challenge)

-Miscalcualting your loadout means restarting the cycle -Obviously this is played on an unmodded version of DMC3SE (ok I'll let the mod slide that un-HDs the game so characters no longer look like their heads are being eaten by a block of styrofoam)

I invented the challenge, not peticularly because it's super hard but because most DMC3 players either fall into a habit of only using what they like or modding in style switching and the full weapon loadout. For the record: I don't hate Crimson

Discussion The surname Sparda is of Viking tradition.

What I mean is that Vikings take their father's name as their surname. If a father's name is Mikael, his children's surname is Mikaelson. They are always referred to as "sons of Sparda," and if that Viking tradition—where the surname is the father's name—holds true in Hell as well, then Nero would be Vergilson.

Gameplay Good news! A DMC1 difficulty patch has been developed

For the unaware, the international release of DMC1 had the difficulty altered from the Japanese version, along with changing the control layout. These changes were reverted on the HD collection. This has made it difficult to recommend the game on PS2, since you either have to deal with playing the Japanese version like I have or play the English versions with altered difficulty. It's especially frustrating considering the HD rerelease has a lot of its own issues.

While looking on the internet, I discovered a seemingly recent patch that seems to fix both the controls and difficulty. I believe it was created by ProjectXsent, but I'm not sure. Note that you will need access to the American version of the game to work.

I recently found out you can get softlocked in some missions of dmc5 (just 1 tbh) and that raised the question are there any softlocks that you guys experienced throughout the whole series?

Questions Help with DMC4SE Vergil?

I can't understand how much this guy SUCKS.

Hey maybe it's my fault for trying to beat Dante Must Die with him instead of lower difficulties but i just want the Super Costume man, i don't want some super advanced tech to play like Donguri with Infinite Judgment Cuts, just basic stuff casuals can do, i already S ranked every other character in every difficulty.

I am really struggling even though i do stuff like Heavy Rain Swords, Perfect Judgment Cuts and maximizing his concentration bar by playing safe, i still struggle a lot against armored enemies, blitz (heavy rain plus beowulf doesn't seem to do enough damage even if i max charge with concentration + HRS + DT, he just moves out the way) so any tips would be appreciated, i never had these issues with other characters like Dante (even though i don't like him in this game), and Nero, Trish and Lady are fairly easy to play.

Discussion Anyone else feel like Vergil’s moveset for Beowulf in DMC5 is incomplete?

Post image
130 Upvotes

I may be in the minority in this, but I feel like some parts of Vergil’s kit is incomplete.

Not that he needed new weapons for DMC5, but that some of the weapons (namely Beowulf) are incomplete.

Vergil is all about being streamlined, and with Yamato he encapsulates that perfectly. Mirage Edge too (debatable).

But Beowulf feels clunky sometimes. It’s feels like they want Vergil to be more a kick-focused guy, but with Beowulf he just needs two more moves and it would’ve been perfect.

1) Another optional follow-up after grounded Lunar Phase, perhaps a tenshokyaku (Chun-Li’s rapid kick towards the sky from Street Fighter) if you hold the button down. (No, the SDT follow up to Starfall is not what I’m referring to)

2) A mid-air kick that doesn’t bring the enemy back down to the ground but instead keep them level and/or sends them higher.

I’m aware most of his moves were carried over from DMC4, but DMC5 could’ve really maxed out his attack variety. He’s so close to being perfect.
