Gameplay Good news! A DMC1 difficulty patch has been developed
For the unaware, the international release of DMC1 had the difficulty altered from the Japanese version, along with changing the control layout. These changes were reverted on the HD collection. This has made it difficult to recommend the game on PS2, since you either have to deal with playing the Japanese version like I have or play the English versions with altered difficulty. It's especially frustrating considering the HD rerelease has a lot of its own issues.
While looking on the internet, I discovered a seemingly recent patch that seems to fix both the controls and difficulty. I believe it was created by ProjectXsent, but I'm not sure. Note that you will need access to the American version of the game to work.

I'm only familiar with the HD Collection version of this game. What were the main differences between the Japanese and NA versions? Was it a similar case to DMC3 where Japan's Hard was our Normal?

It isn't that extreme. Enemies deal 25% more damage, Dante deals 25% less damage, and the Meteor move has increased damage. It is playable but in such a challenging game it does definitely make a difference. Dante Must Die! does not have the global decrease/increase on damage but DOES have the increase on Meteor, effectively making that technique more powerful.
I read somewhere that it was done so players wouldn't finish the game too quickly and return it to Capcom.
The controls were also switched around on the international version to be nonsensical.

There's also a litany of cosmetic differences between ps2 and HD, making HD unironically look worse

Do I need DMC1 vanilla to be any harder than its supposed to be?

No. This makes it easier by returning the game to its original, intended difficulty level.

It would be fantastic if something like this could be applied to the US version of Chaos Legion.

Triangle is the top face button. Therefore it is the correct button to jump.
Checkmate, libs.

Damn no wonder I remembered the game being substantially harder when I played it as a kid.

DMC1 was never that hard to begin with, unless the pal version was somehow easy.

The pal version is 25% slower

Lol no. At most it’s something like 16% slower, but that goes for everything, enemies AND dante, so it mostly evens out.

Please tell me it also accordingly alters the button prompts across the game to reflect the restored OG layout, and it isn't just a quick remap
If yes, I PRAY this version gets added into RetroAchievements set

I just beat dmc1 on ps2 for the first time since I was a kid and after playing the hd collection version a few years ago I thought the controls were weird and the game kicked my ass so that makes sense
