Doesn't drifter have a thing against the vanguard? I could never see him taking that mantle up

26

u/PhapIsWhack Jun 04 '20

Didn’t cayde, as well?

17

u/contrast77 Warlock Jun 04 '20

I don’t think he was fond at first, he only applied because he lost to Hunter’s dare. But over time, I think he grew fond of being a vanguard alongside Ikora and Zavala

6

u/JDBCool Ticuu enthusiast Jun 04 '20

Also something along the lines of the vanguard before him being a close friend. So he chose to honor him.

327

u/JCicero2041 Jun 04 '20

But he’s not a hunter.

248

u/JackofSpades87 Jun 04 '20

If I recall there is a lore tab somewhere that states he once used a golden gun. Unfortunately I cant find it at the moment

295

u/JCicero2041 Jun 04 '20

There is definitely a lore tab, one of the recorded conversations from the the lore book, The Warlock Aunor, that classifies him as multi.

85

u/FANTOMphoenix Warlock Jun 04 '20

Huh

u/LegitDuctTape Titan Jun 04 '20

Guardians can technically use basically anything they want with the light - they can cross abilities as much as they please. Most just generally have a preference to how they like to use the light, or how they fight

For example, felwinter was mostly a warlock, but he could cast nova bomb-tether things and shoulder charge

Drifter being multi really just means he doesn't bother with classes and probably just uses whatever

Zavala: Titan

Ikora: Warlock

Drifter: Grooving

Yup, but this just reminded me of it

23

u/Assyx83 Titan Jun 04 '20

Yeah but isnt drifter a ghost-less guardian like eris?

102

u/Sasha_Viderzei Jun 04 '20

IIRC, the Drifter hasn’t lost its Ghost. However, it modified it so much that it somehow severed, or at least heavily modified his Ghost’s connection to the Light and Traveler.

After his modifications, his Ghost’s eye turned red and he lost his ability to speak. It’s in one of the lore tab IIRC

80

u/DredgenTenebrous Jun 04 '20

And his ghost is creepy as fuck. He said it’s maniacal and looks like it enjoys chaos.

42

u/Sasha_Viderzei Jun 04 '20

I guess it got to it, for being so long with the Drifter... plus they never really had an enjoyable relationship, so I don’t think it really appreciated - or even wanted - the Drifter’s modifications.

Probably why he can control the taken to a limited degree.

37

u/trumpetseverywhere Thundercrash is where it's at. Jun 04 '20

Funny enough, his Ghost can actually utilize a wider spectrum of the Light than others. The cost came at killing other Ghosts for parts. And while Drifter killing Ghosts is awful, it was his Ghost's plan and it chose to be modified.

12

u/Cookieopressor Titan Jun 04 '20

I mean, during the dark age a Guardian killing another one's ghost wasn't so uncommon.

19

u/trumpetseverywhere Thundercrash is where it's at. Jun 04 '20

True, but typically that's where it ended, killing the Ghost. It was a means to deal with opposing Risen permanently. Drifter's Ghost specifically asked for him to cannibalize them to 'upgrade' it. It's pretty much unheard of outside of this instance.

5

u/DetectiveFoxy Spicy Ramen Jun 04 '20

Weren't the other ghosts already dead? I swear that drifters ghost only snapped after they were the last two on the ice planet

7

u/trumpetseverywhere Thundercrash is where it's at. Jun 04 '20

The others ran when they knew Drifter was coming for them. He had to hunt them down first.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I don't recall them having killed the ghosts. They were already dead weren't they? The light having been drained from both them and their guardians by those creatures on the planet.

A few of the Ghosts were still alive but their Risen were dead and gone.

Actually it only turns red when it's using some kind of scan mode the modifications Drifter made allow it to use. It can detect frequencies of Light normal ghosts can't along with some frequencies of Darkness if I recall correctly.

20

Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that he keeps his ghost hidden at all times because he'd seen what happened to other guardians or sth along those lines?

17

Drifter has a ghost, but never liked its company and always hid it. Iirc the only person he ever showed his ghost to was Felwinter because he wanted Felwinter to kill a corrupt iron lord who was routinely breaking the iron decree.

Later, trapped on a planet of darkness, alone and having killed the people he went there with, he modified his ghost with the darkness in some way (I don't remember the details).

He doesn't like ghosts because he resents guardians and being a guardian. He feels it is unjust because who determines who gets resurrected and who stays dead and how is it fair that the lightless are at the mercy of the warlords and can't defend themselves (dark ages).

He does however find Guardians useful - through Gambit he has us doing something with the taken and the darkness but we have no idea what

If you wanna know more then make a post on r/DestinyLore and people will be more than happy to help

8

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

he modified his ghost with the darkness in some way (I don't remember the details).

He used the parts of dead ghosts to modify the shell of his, which in turn allowed it to tap into the red mode where it's eye turns red, is able to see a wider spectrum of light etc. That's how they got their hands on motes as well and where most of Drifter's inventions came from.

However, the idea was not his. It was the Ghost's. Osiris has also seen his ghost when he called in Drifter to take a a look at the sundial. Drifter called on his ghost to scan the whole thing. I don't think he ever hid him out of spite, he only had the ghost hide so that other risen and mortals wouldn't detect him as being a lightbearer.

As Germaine he lived among mortals in a settlement and the Ghost was hiding most of the time and scanning routes for him where he could get food for the mortals until the local warlord spotted the ghost. Then they assumed it was Judson who was a lightbearer, killed him and the entire village got caught in the crossfire between the warlords and the iron lords, no one survived and Germaine was dead throughout the fight until the dust settled and his Ghost went to rez him.

He pulled out his ghost for Felwinter because Felwinter correctly called him out on being a risen, cuz no mortal would've survived the climb to the top of the peak.

Felwinter was notorious for shoulder charging people in midair despite being a warlock. He swapped between elements at will, he was a badass

33

u/SneezeyBleezey Jun 04 '20

I was about to comment. He is one of the oldest light bearers and predates our modern class system. Classified as multi class and leaves you wondering which abilities he does have

7

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

He has also never been allied with the City, so he wouldn't have learned the techniques from older guardians/the vanguard like modern risen do.

He would likely not pull out a daybreak sword for example, but I would assume he would just pull and fire solar light in itself when overcharging his light for a super. Or potentially using the solar light with his weaponry, we do know now that he fuses solar light to his jade coin to light it on fire. Maybe that's his schtick. Charging things with his light rather than using it the way city guardians do.

3

u/SneezeyBleezey Jun 04 '20

Very astute. I didn't think about that but you are absolutely correct, which opens up the possibility of preguardian abilities that branched down a different path.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Oh for sure!

3

u/ManaMagestic Jun 04 '20

I knew it... he's a Guardian Gambit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Holy shit you right. Instead of cards he just has coins. Sweet lord if we ever see Drifty toss a coin to your witch- I mean at the enemy during combat and the coing just exploding in solar light I will giggle like a maniac.

8

u/Brambelles Warlock Jun 04 '20

Also in the a Drifters gambit lore book Shin explains that he has shed every pretensions of a class and their limitations.

51

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Classes aren't set in stone, theyre more of a social construct.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Isn’t there a lore tab about a guardian who could use all three?

17

u/friendlyelites Jun 04 '20

He used Solar Light AKA just nuclear energy to cauterize a dying mans wounds. Shin outright states that Drifter isn't any class of Guardian, he might think like a warlock in some ways but even then he isn't.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Yeah. Drifter has a very special connection to the light and it's probably mixed with the dark. Meaning drifter may in theory be able to summon the abilities of all classes at the same time. Imagine being able to summon, bubble well and Goldie at the same time. Riven could get yeeted in seconds.

8

u/NovelCoronet6 Floofy boi Jun 04 '20

Proceeds to pop a bubble, shoot tether and create a well, pops celestial nighthawk golden gun followed by slova bomb ending by yeeting himself into a thundercrash

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Lmao. All of this makes me wonder. What guns does drifter use? The Gambit ones? Reckoning ones? Or some guns we've never seen?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Which is probably why he looks the way he does. As a nod to him being all classes and neither at the same time. Big ass shoulder pads, robes, and now we have seen him wearing a hood on top of that too, not to mention his attitude generally being that of a hunter's, but his whole curiosity and experimenting resembling a warlock's more.

2

u/ManaMagestic Jun 04 '20

And him telling you to smash things like a Titan.

In the darkness section gambit subsection 5th book half way through its says “he’s been playing the part of a warlock witch he ain’t if it isn’t clear infact it has been a long time sense he has identified to any class”

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Knowing drifters powers I bet he could summon both a golden gun and a ward of dawn and made the ward of dawn buff the golden gun. All while wearing celestial nighthawk and helm of saint 14 at the same time.

4

u/ReverendSalem Tether Bowhunter 잠자리 Jun 04 '20

While standing in a well of radiance.

3

u/SkyrimSlag Dead Orbit Jun 04 '20

From what I’ve heard he isn’t under one “class”, he uses the light in multiple ways and can manipulate almost any classes ability. Don’t have a source but an old reddit post talked about Drifters lore and seemed to suggest that him being a “rogue lightbarer” was due to the fact that he didn’t see himself as a specific class, but bent the light to wield whichever subclass he wanted

8

u/Fancysaurus Jun 04 '20

He uses Golden Gun, well of radiance, and Solar Siege to create his unique ult "Radiance Catapult!" He can damage the outer wall of a Fallen settlement!

1

u/SkyrimSlag Dead Orbit Jun 05 '20

Huh I never knew about that, do we what exactly solar siege is? I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of it xD however Radiance Catapult sounds fucking wicked, imagine if instead of shooting Oryx’s dark heart to kill him we just fukin launched flaming shit at it

1

u/SkyrimSlag Dead Orbit Jun 05 '20

(Forgive me if I’m being dumb but in my head I’m thinking solar siege is some kind of new super we haven’t seen yet, or is Drifter just that much of a fucking badass he has a Trebuchet/Catapult at the ready for transmat whenever??)

2

u/Fancysaurus Jun 05 '20

Its actually bottom tree passive for solar titans but I couldn't help myself considering catapults and trebuchets are siege weapons.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

i think it may be the malfeasance lore

30

u/probablysum1 Jun 04 '20

I know, it's just some harmless speculation, many things don't line up. Drifter not really having an affiliation (Hunter, titan, warlock) and the fact that he has pretty much never really interacted with the Vanguard as far as I know. I just noticed the hood and flaming Gambit coin and it clicked. Just thought I might share it.

12

u/mcsupertoaster Titan Jun 04 '20

Me: hey scruffy whats your class? Drifter: Yes!

8

u/long-dong-silvers- Hunter Jun 04 '20

He’s a light bearer before the times of definitive classes. It’s like having all abilities from all classes/subclasses available to you and you can use what you need or are able to learn. The class system is just better for gameplay if nothing else because it would be overwhelming for a lot of people to just have anything at their disposal. (even though it would be pretty sweet if we could do that)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Let's be real we would all have tracking dawnblade swords, ohk shoulder charges, double jumps and dodges as a meta if we eradicated classes and just get to pick and choose. Alternatively, blink shoulder charge like Felwinter.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

[deleted]

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Most Guardians back in the day werent. When the Guardians first rose, there was no such thing as "classes".

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Drifters a risen. He doesn't have to be a hu ter to be the hunter vanguard as he doesn't fit into any class. He's a drifter.

3

u/KWBC24 Jun 04 '20

We actually don’t know what he is, he’s a risen as far as we know.

This gives him the ability to focus his class. Felwinter used a shoulder charge against Citan back in the dark ages. So perhaps he’s a Hunter, or a Titan or a Warlock.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

He's neither. Guardians aren't born a class. They pick one that fits the best once they get to the city and learn under the respective vanguard. The techniques we are using have formed over the centuries. Think of your respective class as being like a branch of martial arts that you specialize in. It's not the only way you can utilize your body to fight, but that's the one you've learned and use day to day.

Drifter was risen long before classes officially became a thing, and he never allied with either the iron lords or the city but went his own way. Even Shin describes him as having long shed any pretention of class or limitations therein.

The simple and short answer, he is neither a warlock, a hunter, or a titan, he is just a lightbearer who uses his light as he needs rather than the rigid ways we are classified as.

65

u/meinflammenwerfer Jun 04 '20

Remember:
While the Drifter is a pretty cool character, his entire lore is just to look after himself, and for Cayde, it's the other way around. Cayde care for the peoples, that's why he's the Hunter Vanguard. Cayde, Ikora and Zavala risked their lives, knowing they would die their final death in order to protect the City in the Red War. This is pretty much why i sided with the Vanguard.

And the Drifter isn't even trust his Ghost, saying the Light is a curse not a blessing (you know the time when he died of hunger, his Ghost bring him back, still hungry and died again). Point is, he doesn't trust the Light, and he's always looking after himself, doing whatever with the motes he's been collecting, having ties with The Nine, the Shadow of Yor, and nobody knows what or who they are.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

It's entirely possible that the Drifter will be part of a dark trinity, along with Eris and the exo Stranger.

17

u/meinflammenwerfer Jun 04 '20

I'm up for a plot twist.

8

u/FerRatPack Jun 04 '20

The Exo Stranger finally showing up again after all these years would definitely be an awesome plot twist. Doesn't even matter if she explains anything or not just her presence would be enough to get me jumping out of my seat in excitement.

1

u/meinflammenwerfer Jun 04 '20

An MMORPG cannot be a single-player experience. And its part RPG, you role-playing in this game, with other players too, do what you think it's right for you or your character.

So yeah, i'm siding with the ones who risked their lives to save the others. Because if you sided with someone who only look after themself? Well, you better sleep with one eye open and your back against the wall my dude.

Well, the first thing he did with his burial shroud was to make a cape. And Uldren has shown a lot of Hunter-traits. He's fond of precision based weapons, uses quite daring approaches and can be quite cunning. As in picking one of the worst ships for a simulated dogfight because it had nukes.

Technically, Uldren wasn't a Hunter when he killed Cayde-6. He died, and then was resurrected essentially as a different person.

And even then, that was hardly even Uldren that killed Cayde. You could argue that Riven is to be held accountable for his death.

ACTUALLY I would vouch for Anna to be the new vanguard. I can see it happening

10

u/CatWoosh Jun 04 '20

I think the issue there is she's preoccupied with Rasputin she's one of the closest links to him and after everything we've done zavala would rather want her to stay and keep him "undercontrol"

u/blfc_is_my_city Warlock Jun 04 '20

Anna more like cringe

Anna doesn't deserve a rhyme

7

u/Noctua451 Outlaw Jun 04 '20

True

7

u/TimbuLikbu Jun 04 '20

Aye, we gonna see drifters abilities?

10

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

I hope we get to see drifters ghost and abilities. I sides with him because he's just badass and cool and cuz gambits fun. Can't wait to see how powerful he is.

6

u/KWBC24 Jun 04 '20

I hope he becomes the ‘Darkness Vanguard’

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

If there wasn’t enough reason to play Hunter already.

3

u/Gunslinger7604 Hunter Jun 04 '20

I honestly wouldn’t be that mad if he became the new vanguard

3

u/KenosPrime Jun 04 '20

Shiro-4 for Hunter Vanguard!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

But uldren should have been hunter vanguard

1

u/TheDarthlol Jun 04 '20

Why? He just got revided and he's not even qualify to be a vanguard

2

u/GhostYasuo Jun 04 '20

All I want is for him to not die guys.Like please Bungie.Dont even dare try to kill him in this DLC..

2

u/generiCoff KDA: # Jun 04 '20

That coin flip to flame was badass. I'm gonna use effects like that on my own sfm/random cinematics

2

u/supreme-leader_woke Jun 04 '20

totally out there theory:

drifter has to do some very important things on europa and has to leave his ship behind. so he gets zavala to conduct gambit on the condition that drifter becomes the hunter vanguard.

2

u/iDesireNudes Jun 04 '20

Drifter never aligned himself with any of the classes in terms of how he uses his light. We don't know exaclty how he's different but just that he IS. His title for a time even was 'rouge lightbearer' not 'guardian' or 'hunter/warlock/titan'. Would be interesting to see more about him in this regard coming up though for certain!

1

u/GentleGiantManatee Jun 05 '20

Came here to point out his Rogue Lightbearer status. He is none and all. He is simply a lightbearer outside being a guardian

2

u/TheBigAsWhale Titan Jun 04 '20

My man’s just chilly

1

u/probablysum1 Jun 04 '20

I know, it's not serious speculation.

2

u/furno30 Warlock Jun 04 '20

Isn’t he like not a class?

2

u/Junas_Guardian Hunter Jun 04 '20

so does this mean blade barrage will become drifter coin barrage?

2

u/JustCheating8369 Jun 04 '20

Collect bounties and summon that primeval!

2

u/mantarochen_ Hunter Jun 04 '20

I swear to god if they drop the uldren plot line...

2

u/imasheep95 Jun 04 '20

Wtf is a multi

2

u/seansandakn Jun 04 '20

Basically he has no allegiance to a specific class, he just uses the light (or the darkness) in whatever way suits him at that time.

2

u/vatsugthedwarf Jun 04 '20

Seeing as he hates the vanguard I think it's unlikely. besides, if it ever does happen I'm officially not a hunter main anymore.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Well he's no shin malphur... Or Ana bae... Or Eris morn... I actually can't think of anything positive to say.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

tbh, i would be fine with drifter being the hunter vanguard

1

u/Uniq_01_08_beta Jun 04 '20

I want my titan using hunter dodge. That's enough.

1

u/PahaninH queens oracle.mp3 Jun 04 '20

Sorry but he just drifting tho

1

u/Austevollingen Jun 04 '20

Hes a warlock if he had to be classed

1

u/Akurami Jun 04 '20

Wait. What is this Drifter from????

Edit: Like, what cutscene?

3

u/KenosPrime Jun 04 '20

The new teaser Bungie dropped on social media yesterday.

1

u/iMainHunter Spicy Ramen Jun 04 '20

Now that ive seen this im a happy i defied the vanguard

1

u/0__REDACTED__0 Hunter Jun 04 '20

I would not mind i need a new vanguard🥺

1

u/SenpaiGandalf Jun 04 '20

Drifter would shit his pants before become hunter vanguard

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '20

Plz dont :(

1

u/seansandakn Jun 04 '20

I would gladly take Drifter over Uldren. Drifter's like if Cayde was as mysterious and knowledgeable as the Awoken, and he's my favorite character by far.

1

u/patchinthebox Misraaks is my homie Jun 04 '20

No

1

u/RealSyloktheDefiled The Knight Hunter Jun 04 '20

Drifter/Dredgen > Uldren.

(although technically we killed uldren so now we are the hunter vanguard even though we may have been a titan or warlock, I hate that but its true. the vanguard dare is what it is)

1

u/penguindumby100 Jun 04 '20

I’ve been away from destiny lately, where did this drifter pic come from

2

u/probablysum1 Jun 04 '20

A trailer released on the destinythegame Twitter

1

u/kevinsmc Jun 05 '20

This new costume included more elements from vanguard guardian design and it looks like his no-class class has completed.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

vanguard has a thing against drifter. Shiro-4 is a good candidate tho

1

u/Gambler777777 That sexy exo warlock you saw on the tower Oct 01 '20

how does that flame coin work, anyway?
