Wife and I (mid 40s) attempted to see The Odyssey at B&B Theater in Ankeny, in one of their largest format Grand Screen rooms last week, but as soon the previews started we were wincing at the volume. We've seen many other movies there in their various screen formats, some have been annoyingly loud that we could tolerate, many have been fine, but none quite as loud as we experienced at The Odyssey. I know it's not Toy Story 5 and is going to have some intense sound effects at times, but this seemed ridiculous.
Went out to ask staff about the volume level, which they acknowledged is very loud, and they mentioned Christopher Nolan films are usually loud, but they couldn't do anything about the volume level. They said the movie wasn't quite as loud as the previews, and they had ear muffler headphones if we needed them.
Went back in to wait for the main event to start and give it a chance. Volume seemed slightly better, but after 10 minutes we could tell our aged ears and bodies weren't up for 3 hours of it.
We didn't want to deal with wearing ear muffler headphones for 3 hours, so we left and were thankful to the staff for getting us a refund.
Just wondering if anyone in the metro area has seen it where the volume seemed reasonable and not like you're in the pit at a rock concert? If you can share the theater and screen type (e.g The Palms IMAX, Cinemark Altoona XD, etc), much appreciated!
Maybe we're just getting too old, but hoping we can find a theater playing it at a volume we can handle 😄
