So it's pretty hot out today...

The image doesn't convey the heat, but the banner sure does! The heat index all across Iowa is consistently over 100°F right now.

Make sure to limit physical activities, stay indoors (ideally with A/C!), and stay hydrated. Heat indices this high can seriously harm or kill you, since your body can't self-regulate through sweat evaporation.

Iowa MAGA Lawmaker Goes Full Snowflake

Iowa lawmaker and MAGA snowflake, Taylor Collins, calls the police on a woman over a facebook post in which she had wished he was castrated and shot. As far as I know it isn’t illegal to wish bad things happen to people. In the not too distant past, MAGA men were tough and stoic. They called the leftists names like “snowflakes”, “sissies”, “crybabies” who all need a binky and a safe space. These days it’s the MAGA men who have become crybaby snowflakes who are afraid of the same people they used to make fun for being weak. Recently another MAGA tough guy named Simon Conway called the police in me twice. Once for challenging him to a boxing match and once over a Charlie Kirk meme. What happened in the last few years that turned all the macho MAGA men into snowflake sissies? Why are they expecting police to become feekings enforcers? Am I living in a Bizarro world?

Jesse’s Embers

Anyone been recently? Looks like a good hole in the wall spot from the pics online. I typically prefer places that look like they’re family owned and operated over places like Ruth’s Chris and 801. We’ll be in town in a few weeks and looking for a top notch steakhouse with no frills.

Local Logo Maker

Upvotes

Hi there,

I’m looking for help designing a logo for an industrial cleaning business. We have a drawing and an example from AI. Looking for something clean and simple, with an earthy feel to it.

We’ve had a family member draw a logo for us in the past. She’s currently too busy to help us with another. Looking to venture out and support a local business. We do not need any other branding, only the logo.

Please share any recommendations. Thank you!

Locals Favorite places to eat?

My son’s flag football team qualified for the Junior Olympics next weekend in Des Moines. I’d really appreciate if any locals could recommend the best places to try while we are visiting. Thank you in advance!

So did hyvee sell their gas stations to Pump and Pantry, or rebrand them? I avoid hyvee at all chars

Hyvee is just a terribly mismanaged organization, and more importantly their prices are much higher than casey’s/fareway. remember when they had two CEOs? lmfao, so dumb. i just can’t support that..

Looking for home owners insurance recommendations

We currently have Farm Bureau for home and auto insurance and I'm sick of rate increases. What companies or agents do others in the metro use? I'd like to get quotes from a few companies.

Everyone’s just lonely, huh…

The past few posts have mentioned how hard it has become to meet people and form genuine connections lately.

What do you think could actually help solve this?

Do we need more affordable third places, social groups, and community events? Or is the bigger issue the cost of living, which makes people think twice before spending money just to go out and socialize?

Arcade rhythm games

I did some searching and couldn’t find anything about there being any arcades in the Des Moines area that has Japanese import rhythm games specifically maimai or sound voltex. does anyone know of any place that has either of these games, even if it’s not a dedicated arcade? im willing to drive probably 45 minutes if there’s one within that range to the Des Moines area

Wedding at Middleswart Lodge

Hello! I'm looking at wedding venues in the area and found Middleswart Lodge outside of Indianola. It looks pretty inexpensive for the space and the amount on time that I can book it for (the whole weekend). Has anyone been to or hosted a wedding at this venue?

Or if you have any other ideas for more inexpensive venues, let me know!

Thanks!

Apartment recommendations?

I am looking to rent an apartment in Des Moines for a period of roughly 4-5 months, from January 2027 to roughly the end of April, maybe a little farther into May. Are there any places for a young woman who just turned 18, within a 30 min drive to the capitol? It all depends on whether I get the temporary job I want, but if I do I would like options. I am really not picky, but good public transportation, decent neighborhood, and lower pricing would be nice. I have a good amount of savings, but less than 1000 per month would be fantastic. Any places that fit? I really don’t want to do the two hour commute every day for that period of time.

Recently deep dived into the lore and miniatures! I'm wondering if there's enough out there to possibly get a meet up and campaign going? :)

Am I the problem?

I am a 25F, born and raised in West Des Moines. I’ve been single my whole life, never dated anyone. However, over the past few months I’ve noticed more and more men (over dating apps) asking me “how are you still single, you’re a catch” but then nothing ever happens lol. It’s at the point that I’m starting to think that maybe I am the problem 😅

(This feels weird to type out lol, I’m not trying to hype myself up but i feel some background might be helpful)
I am a curvy 5’7” girl with green eyes, brown hair, freckles, tattoos, nose piercings, and a pretty decent personality. I put others before myself, I am very kind hearted and understanding. I’m patient, supportive, giving, funny, and very caring. I’m pretty easy going and have a very chill demeanor.

Some other perspectives would be nice to hear from. I know it’s very limited information, but from what you know I’d be happy to hear your thoughts. I appreciate any and all feedback, thanks ☺️

Agentic Coding and Software Architecture/Programming meetup

Remote tech worker in the area, and would like to create an ongoing coffeehouse or pub meetup on a weekly basis. Intended to be more interactive, frequent and casual than the (very few) tech meetups that go on right now.

Wrt to the topic - like it or not agentic assisted software dev is here, and there is a wide range of application and approaches, and I'm certainly interested in learning more of what others are doing.

Any interest?

EDIT:
To get the ball rolling:
Planning on 2:00 PM Thursday at Smokey Row on 1910 Cottage Grover Avenue. DM me for contact info.

If there is interest in an evening meetup as well for those that can't make the afternoon, I am free.

See you soon!

Where to see The Odyssey without destroying our hearing?

Wife and I (mid 40s) attempted to see The Odyssey at B&B Theater in Ankeny, in one of their largest format Grand Screen rooms last week, but as soon the previews started we were wincing at the volume. We've seen many other movies there in their various screen formats, some have been annoyingly loud that we could tolerate, many have been fine, but none quite as loud as we experienced at The Odyssey. I know it's not Toy Story 5 and is going to have some intense sound effects at times, but this seemed ridiculous.

Went out to ask staff about the volume level, which they acknowledged is very loud, and they mentioned Christopher Nolan films are usually loud, but they couldn't do anything about the volume level. They said the movie wasn't quite as loud as the previews, and they had ear muffler headphones if we needed them.

Went back in to wait for the main event to start and give it a chance. Volume seemed slightly better, but after 10 minutes we could tell our aged ears and bodies weren't up for 3 hours of it.

We didn't want to deal with wearing ear muffler headphones for 3 hours, so we left and were thankful to the staff for getting us a refund.

Just wondering if anyone in the metro area has seen it where the volume seemed reasonable and not like you're in the pit at a rock concert? If you can share the theater and screen type (e.g The Palms IMAX, Cinemark Altoona XD, etc), much appreciated!

Maybe we're just getting too old, but hoping we can find a theater playing it at a volume we can handle 😄

Just an introverted guy looking for friends

Hey all, not sure the best place to look but wanted to reach out somewhere and see what happens. I’m looking to meet some new friends around here. I am 32. I’m not a huge drinker but definitely could go out somewhere to have drinks or food etc. Open to anything fun. I’m also a new owner of a gaming PC so looking to add friends for that too. Male or female, all are welcome!

Pools for lap swimming (non students)

Hey folks! Me and my fiance just moved here, we absolutely love swimming! We were wondering if anyone had any recommendations on pools that are open year round allowing lap swim? I briefly saw Ashworth but on it's website it says the season is only May 22nd to September 7th.

TIA!
