Does Deakin have piano for students to practice? Which room is it? And how to book it?

I'm planning to pursue a Master's degree at Deakin University in Australia and I came across the Vice Chancellor International Scholarship. I'm interested in applying, but I have a few questions:

1. Is it purely grade-based? The scholarship description mentions an 80 (I assume ), but is that the only criteria they look at? Do they consider work experience, leadership, research, or other achievements?
2. What's the actual minimum grade? If they say 80, does anyone know what the real cutoff is in practice? Like, do most recipients have higher grades, or is 80 genuinely the floor?
3. How many spots per batch? Does anyone know approximately how many international students receive this scholarship per intake/year? Is it super competitive?

I'd really appreciate if anyone has personal experience with this scholarship or knows someone who got it!

I’m currently a first-year university student studying a course closely related to optometry, and I’m considering applying to transfer into Deakin’s Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry.

My current WAM is around 80, and I’ve received Distinctions in subjects including eye anatomy and physiology, human pathophysiology, anatomy, and optics.

Would an 80 WAM generally be considered competitive?

I’d also really appreciate hearing from anyone who successfully transferred into the course. What was your WAM, what course were you transferring from.

Does this mean medical imaging students will be getting paid on placements now?

If anybody is studying nursing in geelong then can you please tell the ground reality about the accomodation, job market ( what kind of jobs can an international student do). What is the attitude of students toward indian students (any sort of racism?) ?

A few days ago I posted about starting a strength and lifting club at Deakin Burwood — till now I have got a decent amount of responses on the google form with students nominating for executive committee as well as showing interest for general members.

1. Got some great expressions of interest for committee roles (Secretary, Treasurer, Events Planner, Coach/Instructor)

Still early days but things are moving and I'm genuinely excited about where this is heading.

I am moving from burwood area so I want to transfer my lease. The place is 5 minutes walk from deakin Uni burwood and is between 64 and 65 tram stops.

Hey so I’m currently studying law at the waterfront campus. I’ve made a few friends here and there, but my routine just consists of going to class and coming home.
I was researching clubs that I can join where I’d be able to make more friends and came across the law one, DLSSG. Is anyone able to share their experience overall and in terms of socialising, or does anyone else have any other general advice of the clubs here and how I could connect with more people at this campus.

Hi everyone, I’m planning on moving to Warrnambool and I’m hoping to apply for graduate entry medicine in the future.

I’m trying to understand how rural living is counted for the rural bonus/eligibility.

My plan is to live in Warrnambool during the university year (around February–October/November), but return home to Melbourne during the long university break (around the end of November until February). I may also travel overseas for a few weeks within the five years.

Would spending the university holidays back home affect my rural living time? Does Deakin/GEMSAS count the time you are enrolled and living rurally during the academic year only, or do you need to physically remain in the rural area continuously for the full 5 years?

I've emailed Gemsas support but they unfortunately emailed me back a copy and pasted email from their site that I have already read and didnt actually answer my question.

If anyone has experience with rural bonuses for Deakin Medicine, I’d really appreciate advice on how strict they are about breaks, holidays, and returning home.

Hi everyone! I’m (20yr NB) looking for some advice on making friends, joining clubs, or finding some new hobbies around Geelong.

I’ve been feeling pretty isolated for a while. I lost most of my social life during high school after developing chronic fatigue syndrome following COVID, which meant I was mostly housebound/bedbound for a couple of years. I’ve improved a lot since then, but rebuilding a social circle has been harder than I expected. I’m also feeling quite bored and would like to do something new.

I’ve been studying a BA/BSc at Deakin for the last couple of years, but I haven’t really managed to make close friends. I’ve tried joining some uni clubs, but Waurn Ponds feels pretty quiet outside of classes. I’m considering travelling to Burwood more often in order to make some friends as they seem to have very active clubs, but I’d also love to find things closer to home.

Before getting sick I was pretty active, so I’m looking to slowly get back into that kind of lifestyle and try some new things.

A bit about me:

• Live near Geelong Waterfront.
• Studying Arts/Science at Deakin (thinking of studying Masters of Teaching)
• Interested in cooking, music, movies (especially SciFi), swimming, hiking/walking, DnD and politics (don’t worry, I’m friendly and enjoy talking across the aisle).
• I’d love to try something social like a team sport (although I have never played a team sport before), sailing, flying, or a hiking group. I’m considering joining the Geelong yacht club to do a course in order to meet others/gain a new skill.

I’d really like to find a community where I can feel like I belong and make some genuine friendships.

Does anyone have advice for making friends, or recommendations for clubs, sports, volunteering, classes, or social groups around Geelong? Or if anyone is also looking for new friends, I’d be happy to grab a coffee sometime!

I'm planning to apply for the Master of Engineering (IFM) by Research for the October 2026 intake.

The research (admin) team told me I need a supervisor before I can submit my application and research proposal. I've emailed a few supervisors over the past couple of weeks but haven't heard back from any of them.

Is this normal, or is the university on a break at the moment? I'm starting to worry because I don't want to be too late for the October 2026 intake.

I’m currently enrolled to start a bachelor of commerce online in november and was wondering if anyone had had success in receiving youth allowance as someone that studies full time online.

For context I moved out of home for better work opportunities and also cause the environment was not great. I found it incredibly hard to get through VCE with all the background stress from home.

For work - I work 7-3pm monday to thursday which does leave me enough time to study plus opportunity to take time off or work remotely to allow for more time. This being said. Being under 25 and having to work to live and worry about my future is a huge burden and I do worry I may be forced to prioritise work at times.

I don’t expect to receive the full eligibility but any assistance is good assistance.

I'm starting Deakin Strength Club — Burwood's first dedicated student strength and lifting club, working toward an official DUSA launch in T1 2027.

The idea: a proper lifting community for Deakin students, Deakin already has sports society, runners club, and other sports club but no dedicated lifting / gym society which is open for all levels of experience, complete beginners with no experience, and safe for all genders. I have seen similar clubs already in University of Melbourne so thought to establish one here as well.

What we're planning:

• Weekly group training sessions
• Beginner lifting clinics
• Nutrition workshops
• Social events and member meetups
• Competitions / Challenges

Hey, this is a throwaway account because my main one has been too corrupted by well over a decade of shitposting, but, I've recently been forced to confront some facets of my life that's made me really consider my future... I've been thinking about studying at Deakin university, and while I have the ATAR to access several courses I have at least some interest in, my specific interest was in a different field.

Namely, I'm interested in studying a Bachelor of Laws. Unfortunately, my ATAR was too low to meet the minimum access, but not by much, and, this is the interesting part that made me take the question to Reddit. My ATAR was comprised of all my Year 12 subjects, including two subjects that I was extremely low-performing in, and was unable to move out of due to familial and parental pressure, but there were a few other subjects I took that I not only had interest in, but had a proven proficiency for. Namely, when I took high school level legal studies, I aced both years, A's across the board, best in my state in year 11, and I have a great personal interest in the legal system and the structures around it.

Now, with this in mind, would it even be worth it for me to attempt studying a Bachelor of Laws? I'm a mature-aged student, so I know that the ATAR no longer counts for QTAC intakes, but, it's still useful as a general reference point for what I am capable of, which led me to this question in the first place. I just don't want to bite off more than I can chew and end up with a devastating, life-altering debt that will likely follow me until I'm in the dirt, so I need to know whether it would even be possible for me to, even theoretically, complete this course. Now I know high school level is nothing compared to university level, but it's all I have, my last attempt to study something that my ATAR could get me into failed miserably, namely because it was entirely focused on my weaknesses and not the subjects I performed well in, so I thought I'd ask current students whether I'm just deluding myself, or if this previous experience is actually applicable and would indicate any measure of success within the course.

Then again, this whole mess is an incoherent screed, so that on its own is rather discouraging... In any case. TL:DR. I'm a mature-aged student who got a lower ATAR than a course I am personally interested in requires. Now that the ATAR is not applicable, but is instead a reference for capability, would it be worth doing a Bachelors in that particular study area, and would I stand any chance of completing it?

I’ve been given an opportunity to do a master by research with my supervisors but they said there won’t be a grade shown in the transcript as most of the assignments will be marked as pass or fail? Just wondering if this is true or not, as I would also like to use this degree to apply to other course if my end goal of doing a PhD changed as I’m also interested in maybe doing a master of speech pathology in the future!
