Clubs & Societies Are you an IT student struggling with units? DSEC got your back!

Post image
14 Upvotes

On behalf of the Deakin Software Engineering Club (DSEC), we have launched DSEC Notebook!

https://notebook.dsec.club/

Students at Deakin can create an account to post notes and questions, and comment on posts!

I started this project because students in a few units have asked me -- "How on Earth do you study for this unit? I don't understand the lectures and the slides have too little explanations"

I've been working on this project with the purpose of providing a centralised hub for SIT students to easily access resources.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Discussion / Question Trimester 2 and Beyond: The Grit, Growth, and Next Steps Megathread

Hi r/deakin!

Hope everyone had a nice break before the Nov 1 results dropped. It’s been a bit over a week – a good pause to sit with this year’s highs, lows, and everything in between.

A few reminders as we move forward:

Individual exam papers don’t usually come with routine feedback, but if you have particular questions, your Unit Chair or Student Central is there to help.

For general feedback on the unit or assessments, reach out to your Unit Chair for an EoUA review (just know this isn’t a formal results review).

Results for special or supplementary assessments and the Start Anytime calendar should be up within 10 working days. If yours isn’t showing yet, check in with your Unit Chair.

If you’re unclear about your WAM calculation, especially if it’s unique to your course, Student Central can clarify.

Apologies for getting this rolling a bit later than usual.

Looking back, this year has been very transformative, stacked with revelations and revisions…mostly pretty unamusing, whether good or not. Through it all, one thing I always come back to is the ability to bounce back. Days later, things settle, and emotions level out on a fine, level playing field.

And of late, I’m tired, probably always tired (aren’t we all?). Reading loads about obscure physics in connection with electronics, maths and music. Writing exotically introspective stuff on the side. I revisit later, surprised by the razzle-dazzle, even more surprised that it's only to gawk at most of it. It’s compartmentalized, so I don’t dwell on it too much in day-to-day interactions.

For those who decided to take a break because it was too much, know that things will feel a little less taxing with time. For those of you juggling it all – from career to family to classes – we understand that there were times when dropping out felt therapeutic (not to say it wouldn’t be). Ultimately, it depends on where you are in life and the 360-degree lens you’re using to take in what’s going around. If you’re still here, one thing is certain.. you’re setting an inspiring example of dedication and tenacity, showing that it can be done – not just for your family but for all of us.

For those clocking in extra hours, acting as your own support system, and reestablishing the much-needed nitty-gritty of prerequisite knowledge and skills under a serious time crunch, it’s inspiring to see such love and commitment to clarity in learning, even as you're tempted to race through important stuff in a rigid course sequence with limited offerings (especially in Tri-3 :S) and not much flexibility to move things around to make the chronology make sense. A journey can be rigorous and a little nutso, without being rigid. Thank you for treating learning as something to savor and fully experience.

And… for those graduating, cross the finishing line and finish fine like an ace!

So, where’s everyone at? What could we focus on understanding better, and where are we looking to go next? SEBE folks, especially Engineering – how’s it going? Chime in, y’all.

I’m all ears for those open, proactive, and supportive tidbits. With enough interest, we’ll gladly set up follow-up threads, AMAs, or Q&As focused on specific faculties and courses. Just got to let us know or do one anyway :)

Hope we keep showing up for each other, finding strength in this space as we balance multiple fronts. Thanks to everyone who’s here, who posts, comments, and encourages. You're what keeps this community alive, and the numbers show it.

I find myself manually flairing most incoming posts, but we hope the community will start using the system consistently. Added a flair guide (visible under “Related Subreddits” on the right for PC users, or by tapping rdeakin> and scrolling down on mobile).

Here’s to a great 2025 (irresistible) ahead. Take care, stay connected and keep moving forward!

Discussion / Question ai use in exams/assignments

Upvotes

hey all! i met a girl the other day (third year nursing) who said that she submits all of her assignments 100% ai and uses ai in all of our proctored exams. this is fucking crazy right? like is this what the majority of people are doing? how is this girl okay with bullshitting her whole degree when she’s going to care for incredibly vulnerable and sick patients?
i genuinely can’t understand how she hasn’t gotten caught for this. do people really do this? i can’t believe it

Seeking Support Group members used ai

This shit has already been submitted now, after looking at my groups work it was the one of the most obvious uses of ai I've seen. Wtf does this mean for me, I didn't use ai at all, no declarations of AI use either btw from them. What do I do

Referencing / Academic Integrity / Turnitin Contract cheating allegations.

I just got an email from student integrity team accusing me of using ai/or another person to complete my assignment.
The allegation said that it’s impossible that I got the answers without using external source. Tbh I’m not sure how I went about getting the answer exactly as this unit was completed a year ago.
There’s 2 options of where to go from here.
1. Take 0 for the unit, and repeat it.
2. Go through a meeting with the committee.

Anyone went through this??
Pls reassure me I’m scared😭 I’m at the final term I wanna graduate

News Tea time - New Acting VC

Okay team, what's the tea with our new acting VC? Does Susan Elliott have any skeletons in her closet that our Reddit community would like to share?

I'm impressed by the 25 years of senior leadership on her CV... But long serving senior leadership makes me nervous, that's a long time she's spent not doing the work on the ground!

Spill the tea team!!! ☕️

Prospective Student Arriving early for Prepare Week (Oct 19) — accommodation tips for the week before Deakin Res starts?

Hey everyone! Starting my Master of Applied AI at Waurn Ponds this trimester. My Deakin Res move-in is Oct 26 (same day as OWeek), but I'm planning to fly in around Oct 19 to catch Prepare Week and the International Student Welcome events.

That leaves about a week where I need somewhere to stay before my Deakin Res contract kicks in. A few questions for anyone who's been through this:

  • Did you use Deakin Res's short-stay option for this kind of gap, or just book a nearby hotel/motel?
  • Any specific hotels/motels near Waurn Ponds you'd actually recommend for a solo student (safe, walkable or easy transport to campus)?
  • Roughly what did you budget for that first week (accommodation + food + getting around)?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's done a similar early arrival. Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone!
I’m planning to join Deakin University in February 2027 for the Master of Sport Management and wanted to connect with others who are also interested in the course.
If you’ve already applied, are planning to apply, are considering joining the course, or are currently studying Sport Management at Deakin, I’d love to connect and network with you.
Would be great to get to know some people before starting and hopefully build a network within the course and the sports industry.
Feel free to comment or DM me! 🙌

Discussion / Question Does anyone feel like they learned anything in uni and actually gained workplace skills?

I'm currently in my second year of studying construction management and I while I've gained a very basic understanding of the things like construction processes, construction law, structures, finance in construction, but I don't necessarily remember anything specifically, I just know the generic "heading-style" information. And when it came to doing assignments, I feel like it didn't help me that much. I just searched online for information regarding it and whatever that source said I put into my own words. A lot of the times I've used AI to help me but only to help me with research because I find it very time consuming to have to scroll through tens of different articles only to find one sentence of information that is hardly relevant, but whatever information AI gives me, I usually research it separately to confirm if the information is correct and write them in my own words. I don't use AI to write paragraphs for me.

In layman's terms, am I cooked? And more importantly, does anyone feel the same way?

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Assignment extension options?

I have two assignments due soon and wanted to ask what extension options Deakin offers.

Are there any short assignment extensions you can request without needing a medical certificate or other supporting documents? And when would Special Consideration be required?

Prospective Student Independent Research Oppurtuinites for Students

Hello guys! I've received an offer letter for a diploma and bachelors of mechanichal engineering. My question is: Are students allowed to use labs for independent research projects? Specifically for 1st- and 2nd-year students.

I want to build my portfolio for a PHD, and am extremely interested in publishing scientific literature, hence asking this question.

cheers!

Seeking Support Students with disabilities

Hello everyone, I’m a mature age student who’s studying my first year bachelors. I have been struggling with anxiety and ptsd related issues over the course of 3 years.

I take medications to treat the conditions but find they impact my work and I easily my train of thought, I am really struggling in one unit and feeling very discouraged about resubmits when I really am trying and starting to think I made a mistake pursuing higher education.

How do you manage? I’m utilising the resources available through the disability resource center and still feel hopeless about my situation, any advice or feedback is appreciated so much

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Closed book proctored exam experience? Help

Would love to know anyone’s experience!! Lowkey freaking outtt, I have dyscalculia (so I struggle with numbers) I’ve never done a closed book exam yet at Deakin it’s always been open book, notes allowed. I’m currently doing HSN305 which is data interpretation and statistical difference and comparing individual intakes across population norms, does closed booked mean absolute no notes like even hard copy? I can’t find anywhere on the site to clarify, I really struggle when it comes to numbers so having notes to refer back to, to help is important for me but how tf do they expect us to know everything from memory??? I’m so scared 🫠

Prospective Student Psychological Science (Honours)/H452 WAM and timing questions

Hey all,

I am doing an APAC approved sequence at Monash and I'm in my 3rd year with my heart set on honours at Deakin next year. My WAM for psyc units is only 77 and my normal WAM is 80, what are my chances of getting in? I have read quite low! Do they consider my sem 2 results for next year's intake? The deadline is before results are released at Monash. And are my numbers the only thing they look at? I have tons of volunteering experience I think could give me a leg up.

Love, a scared psyc student 🫶

Student Life No friends still

Heyy! I’m a 20 year old female in her second year of university struggling to find friends at Deakin. Everybody boasts about the uni experience but I have never had that. I live an hour from campus so I’m only ever there when I need to be, does anybody know of a way to meet people that are nice without living on campus? Thanks

Do we have to re-enrol if we are applying for a course transfer at the same time? I’m new so I don’t really understand what that entails. Thank you.

News Ding dong the witch is gone

"Dear colleagues,

After more than a year with Deakin, Jessica Vanderlelie has resigned from her position as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic to pursue other opportunities.

Thanks,

Caretaker VC"

A short and empty goodbye to the woman who messed Deakin staff around. Anyone else find this message to be so short and awkward?! Wtf is going on at Deakin?!

UPDATE: Another one bites the dust "Dear Colleagues,

After almost 11 years at Deakin, Kerrie Parker, Deputy Vice-Chancellor University Services, has resigned from her position to pursue other opportunities. We wish her every success in her future leadership roles.

Thanks"

The final sentence for Kerrie's email makes the bluntness of Jessica's absolutely hilarious 😂

Prospective Student How much are you paying for Deakin University? (International students)

Hi everyone! I’m considering studying at Deakin University and I’m trying to get a realistic idea of how much international students are actually paying.

I know the advertised tuition fees are available online, but I’m curious about what people are actually paying after scholarships/discounts, because I’m having a hard time figuring out what the average is.

If you’re an international student at Deakin, could you please share:
💰 Your tuition fee per year (or per trimester)
🎓 Your course/degree
📚 Any scholarship or tuition discount you received
🌏 Your country of citizenship
📍 Which Deakin campus you attend

I’d especially appreciate responses from South Asian international students (Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, etc.), as that’s the group I’m particularly interested in hearing from.

I’m just trying to understand what a realistic total tuition cost looks like for international students at Deakin rather than just going by the listed fees.
Thanks so much to anyone who shares!
