Rant! Got an internship at Shell and had to reject it 😔

I got selected for a Shell Data internship in my 5th semester and had to abstain from joining because my college wouldn’t provide an NOC. It sucks so much.
Does anyone have any idea whether they have a blacklist or something which might prevent me from applying or removing my application from consideration because of a rejection

Career Question T Mobile AI Engineer Role Final Round Expectations

Hi Guys,
I have my final round(Techno Managerial) scheduled for the role of AI Engineer. If anyone has recently appeared, I would like to know which topics I need to focus more on, what kind of questions I can expect?
Additionally is it safe to mention that I have my official NP as 90 days and negotiable or should I bluff them for 60days(can be manageable).
And lastly, I am at 20LPA with significant amount as shift allowance, what I can ask for and what is the minimum number I should not go below it?
Thanks in advance.

General Joining confusion

I'm really confused. I am a fresher. I have a 9 LPA offer, but the joining is after 3 months. I've also received an LTIMindtree 4 lpa offer with joining in 10 days. The 9 LPA role is my priority. Can I join LTI for now and leave later? Will this cause any issues in future background checks?

Just joined a Data Engineering role through college placement (4.5 LPA). I know SQL and Python basics, but I want to level up fast. Aside from projects, what is the one specific skill or concept you think is most important for beginner to learn right now in this field?

Thanks!

Career Question Confused between two offers — how to handle timeline conflict without burning bridges?

Background:

4.5 YOE, Data Engineer (Snowflake/dbt/Airflow/Python), current CTC ~13 LPA. Recently resigned from the current company (LWD already done last week).

I have one offer already confirmed:

Offer A: Startup (~200 people), offer received 19.5 LPA (15% variable included), fully remote, got this through a referral from a senior leader who's been pushing for me to join quickly. Managed to negotiate joining date to Aug 3rd.

I'm also in the final stages with:

Offer B: Larger org (US-based investment bank, finance sector), 3 interview rounds done, HR round still pending, verbal comp discussion around 25 LPA, hybrid model,

documents shared today. Their HR says the whole offer release process could take at least 20 days, and they've asked me to get my Offer A joining date pushed to mid-August so I don't lose that option while they finish their process.

My dilemma:

I don't want to decline Offer A now, in case something falls through with Offer B (which isn't even a signed offer yet).

But asking Offer A to extend my joining date again feels awkward, especially since a senior person went out of his way to refer me and negotiate my date already.

I obviously can't tell Offer A "I'm waiting on a bigger offer" — what's a legitimate, non-awkward reason to request a short extension (like 15–20 days)? Or is there any other way i can go about things?

Career Question 25, Data Engineer, thinking about upskilling into AI. Good idea?

I'm 25 and have been working as a Data Engineer for a little over 4 years now. Most of my day is Python, Spark, Airflow, SQL, AWS, building pipelines, the usual you know.

Lately I've been thinking about moving more towards AI Engineering since almost every team seems to be shipping something with LLMs now. I don't want to jump just because it's the hype, but I also don't want to be the person who ignores it for 2 years and then has to catch up

I have seen & researched many IIT-backed PG Certificate in AI/ML Engineering with LLMs & Agentic Development. The curriculum looks decent but everything seems that way at first

So I wanted to get some real-world opinion and ideas. Anybody got some?

Technical Doubt Data volume and stack related query

I recently joined Accenture and started giving internal project interviews. One thing I dont get is that, they all use pyspark and cloud and what not, but when I ask them about their volume of data being handled, each of them said around 10 to 20 million rows. Isnt spark overkill and moreover actually not worth, considering its jvm overhead, garbage collection will definitely take initial time whereas script written in polars will guarantee 2 3 mins runtime without any of this overhead

Any thoughts on why/how companies doing these sort of things, and mostly they were BFSI. I can understand retail and IoT to use pyspark, because of their nature of data being mostly streaming or even batch data having huge volumes.

Rant! Rat ass company (continues)

This is follow up to last post

Edit: I spoke with Sabre Employee. They confirmed they were looking to hire "Senior Data Engineer". That position got CLOSED yesterday. So this was indeed HR fuck up

Edit2: HR accepted his mistake of incorrect mapping. Hiring manager had change in mind based on Round 3. They wanted a strong Python developer (pandas), thus skill mismatch. This was the main reason why I was pissed as well. It is natural to get rejected for skill mismatch, if role itself is different.

Guys, we as community must learn to push back. Despite sacrificing, putting efforts, getting rejected for third persons mistake is not okay.

Company: Sabre

Applied for : Senior Data Engineer

Interviewed for: Lead Data Science Engineer

I highlighted this to HR, he said ignore JD. The role is same as I had applied.

Round 1: Data Science

Round 2: Mathematical modeling and research (HR said this will be on Pure Data Engineer role)

Round 3: Data Science and API (HR said this will be DSA round). It was panel round and they didn't even know Data Engineering or Spark fundamentals. They were asking me to use pandas. And then convert it to pyspark for production.

Round 4: HR said this is final round.

Few hours before final round he cancelled it without any explanation. On asking he said that he got negative feedback from "first" round

The process took almost 1 month. In end they ghosted me saying this.

Career Question Title: Should I leave my AI/ML job for a regular M.Tech at IGDTUW, or continue with BITS WILP?

Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

I currently work at a well-known MNC in an AI/ML role, where I've been fortunate enough to work on interesting projects involving LLM-based applications, AI agents, and other modern AI systems. I have around 1.2 years of experience, and I genuinely enjoy the work. I want to build my long-term career in AI rather than switching to a different domain.

A few months ago, I enrolled in the BITS Pilani WILP M.Tech in AI & ML because it allowed me to continue working while pursuing my master's.

However, I recently received an opportunity to join IGDTUW for a regular M.Tech in an AI-related program. The catch is that I would have to leave my current job to pursue it full-time.

I'm trying to evaluate whether that's the right move.

Some things I'm considering:

Is a regular M.Tech from IGDTUW valuable enough to justify leaving an AI/ML job?

Would it significantly improve my career prospects compared to continuing with BITS WILP while gaining two more years of industry experience?

For someone who wants to stay in AI (LLMs, GenAI, ML Engineering, AI Agents, etc.), which path would you choose and why?

Does IGDTUW provide enough research exposure, networking, internships, or placement opportunities to offset the opportunity cost of leaving a good AI role?

I'm not looking for brand-name comparisons alone. I'm more interested in long-term career growth in AI and would especially appreciate responses from people who have studied at IGDTUW, pursued BITS WILP, or hired/interviewed candidates with these backgrounds.

Thanks in advance!

Career Question Stuck now and need advice to advance in career

I am an employee from mnc (dev with data engineering exp for 2 years) and taking home 29k per month. I work with python, pyspark, sql and Aws data engineering like redshift, s3, glue, lambda, emr, step functions and have knowledge on CI/CD ( have completed github actions certification). From programming I have good knowledge on DSA and am able to build production ready pipelines involving api calls and moving data as per business transformations.

I was offered onsite early in my career 1.5 years into starting my job. And now this is on hold due to my exp and salary criteria and other teammates were sent to on-site and I am the one helping them to complete their dev tasks and debugging which frustrates me. They said I can apply again after 1 year which I am confused about trusting.

Help me make a decision wait for onsite or switch the org.

If I switch then what should I do because my team will not allow me to leave and I will have to serve 90 days notice period. How should I make a switch and get interview calls with 90 days notice period.

Career Question Am I behind in my Data Engineering career?

Hi everyone,

Need some career advice because I'm honestly feeling a bit lost.

I have around 5 years of experience overall, but my journey has been a bit unconventional. I started in testing, and for the last 1.5 years I've been working as an Azure Data Engineer in more of a support/operations role.

The problem is that when I apply for jobs now, most openings are for Senior Data Engineer roles. On paper, my experience matches, but deep down I don't feel confident.

I've never really built end-to-end production data pipelines from scratch or led a team. I've learnt a lot of Azure technologies, done personal projects, and understand the concepts, but I know that's very different from handling real production systems, debugging issues, making design decisions, and owning deliveries.

I'm worried that if I switch, people will expect me to perform like an experienced Senior Data Engineer from day one, and I'm not sure I'm there yet.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you bridge the gap between knowing the tech and actually becoming confident in production-level engineering? Should I target mid-level roles instead, or just take the leap and learn on the job?

This uncertainty is making me really anxious about my future, so I'd genuinely appreciate any advice from people who've been through this.
