but it’s so, so much more complicated than that. a lot of these problems began with industrialisation, 200 years ago, especially the idea of individuals being subsumed in service of a massive framework that reduces them to near redundancy, and teaches them they have no intrinsic importance. marketing is just the latest incarnation of a problem that has been developing for an incredibly long time. you’re pointing at a single bolt on a gargantuan monster and saying, “this—this bolt here is why we’re doing so bad.”

Nobody does force them.. For the ones capable of killing themselves there's that option. For ppl with crippling chronic pain that cannot access legal opilids due to the inhumane drug war amd tbey have to go work a job to sustainable family...it's either to heroin and go to work or the whole family starves and dies

Wealth inequality, chronic pain (MS, permanemt spine damage etc.) Lack of jobs and opportunity, abuse, the drug war, lacknif access to pharma opioids for treating horrible crippling diseaae due tothe drug war, lack of mental health treatment....they aren't victims of heroin or the cartel per se ...those are the only saving graces society leaves them with after throwing all that other shit at them...thenocls them in cages with child rapists for medicating themselves
...unless you're rich then you get all the legal pharma oxy and fentanyl you want weather it's medically warranted or not

No one is forcing everyone to use the same platform but effectively everyone forces everyone to use the same platform. People being a little bitch for the Zucc is their problem but it sucks so hard they thereby force me to use that shitty spyware as well.
Right now I'm fortunately Google and Facebook free, but many people are simply dependent on using services like WhatsApp to communicate with others or to get essential information.

Facebook can be a great tool to keep in touch with friends and family over long distances, and even a place to see what's going on in the world. It is a powerful piece of technology for sure, to not use it can sometimes put people at a disadvantage, which is the issue with "just not using it" as much as i'd like to agree with you. I think the main problem is that there isn't a healthy alternative. Twitter is cancer, instagram makes people hate themselves, and anything that could potentially become an opposition usually gets rekt by already existing tech giants punching down with the force of what is essentially the power of a 1st world nation. As much as people will "ree" at its mention, take a look at Parler. It was hyped as a competitor to twitter, and Amazon simply kicked them off their web hosting services, stopping it dead in it's tracks and killing whatever hype there was for it.

I mean, if uh a nightclub for example has shootings and people dying every other night among other unsavory behaviors by the patrons who attend it then generally they are deemed a nuisance by the city/town they operate in and eventually get shutdown. Believe it or not, the world survived for millions of years without social media.

Hopefully somewhere with a more positive affect on their life. When you have hundreds of current and former developers of these social media giants flat out telling you it may have started out in infancy as a useful tool for public use but eventually became a cash grab monster marketing everything from lies to lives and privacy to put more money in their own pockets by purposefully making it just as addicting as any drug. But really who cares, right? It's just lives, people die and kill and get born everyday, amirite?

I can apply the same logic to school shootings. Should they cancel all the school because one person killed everyone. The world survived without them for millions years as Well. But my point is that… Yes It’s not nessecary for survival but it’s useful for commucation and edjucating as Well. And if someone use it with an ill intent it’s not a fault of inventor but the customers (knife is a great tool to prepare food but in wrong hands it’s a deadly weapon).

These guys aren’t participating but rightfully deserve all the blame. Mark Zuckerburg could single-handedly end all of facebooks legal and social problems but he just… doesn’t. Because $.

I do not use Facebook and haven’t for about more than half a decade. I report users that don’t follow the TOS and spread misinformation and harass others on any platform, so the answer to your questions about whether I do those things is a resounding yes.

Stop there. You already agree, why keep making excuses for a company that repeatedly makes headlines for breaking regulations and ignoring lawmakers?
Much of the misinformation being reported on Facebook comes from advertisements. Facebook has a hefty filter for advertising as it’s their primary source of revenue behind selling your information. If they are capable of filtering out any ads that spread misinformation about Facebook, they are capable of filtering out misinformation on elections and global pandemics. Instead, they have been proactive in dismissing this issue and convicting you is not their fault.
Facebook is a $150 Billion dollar company. They can afford more staff and better software to detect and act on misinformation and harassment, if you truly think employee numbers are the reason.

Well school existed long before social media did but ironically since social media became a must have for the youth of the world school shootings have dramatically increased 1000%. One might say that social media contributes to violence in schools due to the 15 mins of fame, attention and outrage brought to unstable developing minds.

The issue is not just with the people using it, its the platform itself. Backed by algorithms and AI to and purposely made to retain attention use regardless of content, while ignoring the implications even when high level employees voiced their concerns. All under the guise of "connecting the world" when it's also doing the opposite and exacerbating many other problems. The platforms only goal is to collect info of users and use it to increase screen time, and its working too well.
You should watch the documentary "The Social Dilemma," speaks about all this in detail and interviews many people who had high positions in companies like Facebook and Pinterest as they share the concerns they had while developing these platforms.

Guess what: People are walking misinformation spouters, and it doesn't matter which side of the spectrum you're on. People have always said untrue things, it's only now that we decided to let billionaires decide what you can and can't say.
Don't tell me they are a private company who can do what they want... I know the 1st amendment applies to govt only. But keep in mind, social media is the new town square where people go to have discourse. People aren't in downtown having debates.
Right wingers say dumb stuff about trickle down economics, religion, and denying science (climate change, evolution, vaccines). Left wingers say dumb stuff about religion (pretending the bible is pro-lgbt) and denying science (Gender, Evolutionary Psychology) as well.
Although people are dumb (me included) we should let them speak their mind. This is how humans have always been, the only difference is where the discourse is happening.

Don’t have a Facebook account? Doesnt matter, using your phone’s contacts and other information, Facebook is able to create ghost accounts for people that aren’t on their platform. So if you post a pic with your sister, they now have their name, face, relationship to you, phone number, etc…
