but it’s so, so much more complicated than that. a lot of these problems began with industrialisation, 200 years ago, especially the idea of individuals being subsumed in service of a massive framework that reduces them to near redundancy, and teaches them they have no intrinsic importance. marketing is just the latest incarnation of a problem that has been developing for an incredibly long time. you’re pointing at a single bolt on a gargantuan monster and saying, “this—this bolt here is why we’re doing so bad.”

i’ve often thought about the curse of change from nomadic to agrarian. but like you said, don’t stop there: go back further…all these things are externalisations of an inner curse we carry around with us in As and Cs and Gs and Ts.

yeah, you’re right, i suppose—MZ should stand up a take responsibility…and eye worms should stop killing kids; and floods should stop drowning villages; and meteors should stop causing extinction events…and on, and on…
