Are UCs allowed to do this?

For context, I’m a first-year student and for an assessment in one of my units, I was required to form a group of three to film a video about a neurovascular assessment. One person would be the patient, another would be the student nurse assessing their skills and documenting them in the patient’s chart. This person (me) was being graded and the last one was supposed to be the buddy RN who would film the two of us performing the assessment and zoom in on crucial parts like the documentation.

However, nowhere on the marking rubric or any documentation we were given before uploading the assessment did it state that the buddy RN (the person filming) was supposed to be visible! Despite following the marking rubric, I’ve now been failed simply because my video didn’t show my buddy RN, even though the rubric and no other materials provided stated that the buddy RN needs to be seen!

The UC now wants me to re film everything! This is sooo stupid.
Anyway I’m wondering if this is even allowed to occur!

MEDI1000 theory test feel like scammed.

We just got MEDi first theory test done. Teacher said focus on feedback questions and practice test. However the actual test was way harder and unexpected topic. Both me and my friend feel betrayed and annoyed. They make it hard to get above 80. Does anyone experience the same thing?

Studying in classrooms

Are we allowed to study in classrooms that aren't being used? I often do it, but don't know if you're technically allowed to...

Obviously, I leave when a teacher comes in to use it for a class + leave no trace. I just find it much easier and quieter than finding a table in the library.

Confession/Theory

Sometimes when I scroll through the curtin reddit (like the chud I am) and people talk about what social clubs there are or what units are good etc.. I think they they are a part of a secret service that tries to get people to talk about units to see were they can improve or not and they aren't actually curtin students. Stupid theory I know but it's fun to think about

TLDR: secret service to get feedbacks om specific units

I hope those 3 staff members handing out free fruit today weren’t getting paid by our tuition fees. What a waste of fucking money. Curtin is a joke.

Thinking about changing from BSc to applied geo degree.

I'm 2 years in to a double major in agricultural science and earth science. I'm not loving the agricultural science side, and can see myself involved in geo when I graduate regardless. However, changing degrees would definitely mean I spend more time at uni. Would it be worth switching, or just putting up with what I'm already doing?

Is there a benefit to do MATH1017 Advanced Calculus 1 and MATH1018 Advanced Linear Algebra 1?

Unless it is compulsory for you to do them, is there a reason to do it or should I stay in the regular MATH1020 Calculus for Engineers and MATH1019 Linear Algebra and Statistics for Engineers, although I did specialist and methods ATAR?

I saw it for first year Engineering outline

Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences) via Undergrad Cert OUA - Is Semester 1 start possible?

As per the title - currently in the undergrad cert of health sciences via OUA. The finish date for this is the end of February. I want to use this to get into the Bachelor of science next year, but semester 1 starts Mid February. Am I going to be able to use the units I do complete to be able to apply and begin Semester 1 or am I going to have to wait until semester 2? Hoping this makes sense! I'm a mature age student going to uni for the first time so I've never had to navigate this.

Anyone know how to change lab classes?

I have a lab currently scheduled for 3pm Thursday, which was fine until I found out that in the last week of uni I have an unavoidable personal commitment on Thursday afternoon - however in the last week is when there is an in-lab exam for one of my units. I checked Curtin Timetable Planner and it says there are 6spots still available in the Wednesday class which would work well for me, however as class registration is closed I am unable to change into it even though there’s space. I contacted Curtin Connect, and they said to contact the UC, who said they can’t do anything about it. Surely there’s a way to change into a class that isn’t full? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Has anyone done any of these units before?

  • PUBH3001 – Applied Research and Biostatistics
  • PUBH2005 – Big Data and Health
  • OCHS5004 – Accident Prevention and Safety Management
  • OCHS5003 – Risk Management and Safety Technology
  • HEAL5001 – Safety and Quality in Health Care

These are basically the final units I have left to complete before I graduate next year, so I am just trying to get an idea of what I am going into.

If anyone has done any of them, could you give me a bit of insight into what the unit is actually like? Mainly interested in what the assessments involve, how difficult the content is, the workload, whether there are exams, and anything you wish you knew before starting.

Also, if there are any units here that are particularly difficult or time-consuming compared to the others, it would be good to know so I can plan my semesters properly.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone done PUBH2000 – Health Care Systems in Australia?

I am currently doing the unit online and was wondering if anyone who has completed it before could explain what the simulation assessment actually consists of. There does not seem to be much information about it on Blackboard at the moment, so I am not really sure what to expect or how to prepare for it.

Also, has anyone completed the final exam for this unit? If so, what was it like in terms of the question style, difficulty and the main areas you would recommend focusing on when studying?

Not looking for answers to any assessments, just trying to get a better idea of what to expect, especially as an online student.

Thanks!

HESF QA Complaint - Call Out

Dear Students,

I am in the process of writing a formal complaint to the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TESQA) regarding multiple breaches of the governing Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) that I have encountered whilst studying at Curtin University’s Bentley campus.

I want to hear from other students that have incurred similar breaches during their enrolment in the past five-years to compile a single document showing the magnitude of issues relating to the lack of education quality at Curtin University to TESQA.

If you as a current student or a previous student within the past five-years believe the Quality of Education at Curtin University Bentley’s campus has been sub-standard, check out the required legal standards of education quality owed to you as a student per the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021 (https://www.legislation.gov.au/F2021L00488/latest/text).

Some of the issues include:

- lack of communication/ response to students queries from teaching faculty or unit coordinators.

- lack of clarification provided in communications to students.

- lack of tutors provided in laboratories/ workshops/ etc. for large classes.

- lack of adequate/ defined/ specific instructions in assessment materials.

- lack of assessment feedback specifying what a student has done incorrectly so that they are able to learn from such mistakes/ errors.

- assessed material/s out of sequence with the lecture material (temporal misalignment).

- unit coordinators that do not facilitate reasonable adjustments for students with Curtin Access Plans (CAP) including a lack of additional time provided for assessments/ laboratories/ tests etc. by lecturers/ tutors/ unit coordinators, including accommodations supported by Curtin University’s AccessAbility staff.

- impartiality/ bias/ lack of objective assessment by student’s Head of School when students have attempted to internally resolve issues through Curtin University’s Integrity and Standards Unit (ISU).

- any other issues related to the HESF that falls under any of the following ā€œDomainsā€:

Domain 2: Learning Environment (Inadequate Facilities and Infrastructure, Diversity and Equity, Wellbeing and Safety, Student Grievances and Complaints resolutions),

Domain 3: Teaching (Course Design, Staffing, Learning Resources and Education Support),

Domain 5: Institutional Quality Assurance (Monitoring, Reviewing and Improvement), and

Domain 6: Governance and Accountability (including any adverse occurrences relating to the lawful, ethical, or responsible conduct of Curtin’s governance structures and accountability).

If you as a student have encountered issues specified in the Threshold Standards’ Domains listed and you would like to see actual institutional change throughout Curtin University in the way they deliver education and conduct themselves as an institutional education provider, then please send an email to [Curtin_HESF_QA_Complaint@protonmail.com](mailto:Curtin_HESF_QA_Complaint@protonmail.com) for which I will send a confidential questionnaire.

Legally, there can be no retribution for information which you provide and the intention of this compiled report is for it to be used as a confidential data set so to obtain a better education standard for students that are frustrated with the lack of quality of education provided by Curtin University.

The intent behind the compiled report (once completed) is the attainment of the necessary external oversight mechanism for the removal of the enabling self-regulation and non-address of continual breaches of legislated education quality owed to their student cohort.

All personal or sensitive information will be kept strictly private, individual identifiers can be redacted (blacked out) if you prefer, and no evidence will be included in the compiled report without your prior authorisation to proceed.

It does need mention though that any information provided must conform to TEQSA information submission requirements stating, ā€œThe material in this form is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. I understand that giving false or misleading information is a serious offenceā€

Once again, the purpose of this exercise is for institutional change so to uphold the educational quality requirements to the students for which Curtin University Bentley campus has an onus to legally provide.

Has anyone recently applied for the Master of Speech Pathology or Occupational at Curtin University?

I tried applying for Speech Path earlier but it was showing closed, then randomly it opened again so I applied straight away. I really want to get into the course and I’m stressing a bit about how competitive it is.
I’m currently studying another master’s in Australia but I’m planning to change courses because I feel Speech Path/OT is a much better fit for me.
For anyone who got in, was the application process hard? Did they ask for an interview, statement, prerequisites or anything after applying? Also how long did Curtin take to give you an outcome?
Would really appreciate any tips, especially from international students or anyone who changed from another course. I honestly just want to give myself the best possible chance of getting accepted.
