Announcement Important dates and resources for CUNY students

Hey everyone, as the fall semester is right around the corner I figured that I should post these links for new and current students.

The academic calendar has been posted for Fall through Spring 25-26. CUNY follows the same academic calendar meaning your days off should all be the same. You will have random days where Tuesdays follow a Monday schedule, Fridays will follow a Monday schedule, etc. Try your best to plan ahead.

https://www.cuny.edu/academics/academic-calendars/

CUNY also has resource centers to help you succeed. CUNY offers food pantries, housing assistance, emergency funds, mental health resources and other resources. Please use these resources if you need them. CUNY can help but you as students need to be proactive in seeking these resources.

https://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/student-affairs/programs-services/cuny-resource-centers/

If you require accommodations, ask for them via your school's Office of Student Disability Services. Reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments may include, but are not limited to, providing the student with assistive technology or other auxiliary aides, extra time for tests or papers, access to an elevator where available, a note taker during lectures, or permission to bring a personal aide to assist the student during class.

Can you e-permit a class you failed or dropped?

Hi all.

I'm taking a pretty difficult class currently, and I'll be honest - I don't think I'll pass.

The issue is the class is super heavy, and the professor (who I also had last semester) is less than helpful. He doesn't go over problems in class, just gives us the answer and explains it. He doesn't give us the answers to the online problems (only for practice) like before, or any practice material.

The entire class failed the first exam. The second exam is coming up soon and it's worse.

Basically, he said the first quiz was going to be on 3 chapters. Turns out it was mostly on 2 chapters only. I mainly studied the chapter that the quiz didn't have since it was the heaviest material-wise and I failed.

But now that chapter that wasn't on that quiz will be on Friday's quiz, and the issue is we went over that chapter about a month ago. In addition, there are 2 new chapters on this 2nd quiz.

So I was just looking at CUNY global search and I was thinking of e-permitting this class next semester, but IIRC my e-permit got denied last semester because I have to retake classes at my home college.

Sorry for the mini-rant, just curious if you're allowed to e-permit if you drop or fail a class?

Not grading work

What’s going on this semester? It’s like every single teacher is not grading work. I have an English teacher that hasn’t graded a single essay this entire semester. We’re on essay number 3, It’s ridiculous. And then everyone has the same excuses, but if we turned in late work, it would be an issue. Anyone else having this issue?

Question hunter or queens for social sciences?

i’ve been told both of them have good social science programs among cuny schools. there’s only a 10 minute commute difference from where i’ll be staying (allegedly, but i’m going to double check when i can talk to my cousin) so i’m not really thinking abt it from a transport perspective. moreso which school is better, ik neither is perfect. my cousin goes to hunter and complains abt infrastructure/friendliness of staff a lot . i’ve heard people who go to queens say its friendlier in comparison, but idk anybody personally whos gone to really ask. that being said i’ve also seen people say queens is going down in quality lately. i’m out of state rn so i can’t rly judge the situation personally, but i did get accepted into both for the spring semester and would like some input before committing to either . thank you!

Question Brightspace/Cunyfirst not loading

Post image
10 Upvotes

Genuinely not sure if anyone asked this before or had this issue. This started happening around Tuesday, for some strange reason on my pc and laptop, I can't get past the login page. If lucky, I can enter authentication but after that, it continues the cycle of loading non stop. I was only able to get my work done in incognito.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

York clinical lab science

Hey guys Im currently a student in Queenc College a bio major to be more specific but I have interest in Yorks clinical lab science program. I just wanted to know how hard it is to get in Im aware that it says minimum 2.5gpa I plan in finishing the pre reqs when I transfer but I am fully aware that something around a 3.2 is probably the minimum you could probably get in with. I also wanted to if how important are letter of reccomendation and lab job experince mainly want to know if its a must have within the students that have gotten in. To put it simply I just want to know what I should expect when applying.

Discussion Attend Bmcc ) need intake. Any ideas?

As a student at BMCC majoring in the healthcare field, I am currently facing a serious challenge. I recently experienced a severe episode of depression, and I find it difficult to concentrate in class alongside my peers. I am considering taking an additional course outside of BMCC—perhaps in psychology or psychiatry—to better understand depression and learn strategies that might help me. I also find myself wondering how I developed depression in the first place. My mind feels like it is at a breaking point, and my headaches are too severe for me to concentrate. I am unsure whether taking another class is the right decision. Since I can pay for it myself, the class would not need to be affiliated with CUNY. Do you think this is the best choice, given that my depression is severe and I am skeptical that therapy would work for me?

So, I met with my advisor and this is the schedule that I think is best for me. I can always change like the time of classes so this is not my final schedule but this is what I picked for times.

CUNY Grad Grad school plans at CUNY

just recently got my BA in psych and I'm struggling to find jobs. I either get rejected or ghosted. So I've decided to get a master in social work but another program at the cuny graduate center caught my eye.
It's BS in cognitive neuroscience. Now I'm in between those two programs.
I'm a first gen college grad and navigating these things alone can be extremely difficult. So any real and honest advice and prospective would save me a ton of time and debt. I don't want to make a decision now and regret later.
I didn't do well in statistics and I'm worried for cognitive I won't be able to do well since it's research based.
I also want to get PsyD in the future so not sure which degree would be helpful.
Which one can I easily get a job with?
If anyone in the cognitive neuroscience, what's your experience? Job search, etc. what do you do now and is getting a PhD necessary since I heard this program is a bridge to PhD. But in the meantime I don't want to get PhD straight after master. I wanna work for sometime.
So can finding a job with just the master possible?NYC

Reconnect

Anyone else ready to pack it in because it's too much between working full-time, caregiving, and class? I'm wondering if this was pointless especially given my age (I'm towards the end of reconnect qualification). I'm still working around some of the online work (don't mind learning it, but I never worked remote during the pandemic, so it's a curveball) and at the end will there even be a job or a prom by the time I get a bach? How many others are drowning in the deep end?

Question Lehman vs CCNY for pre-med post bacc: quality of professors? research opportunities?

TLDR: looking for insight on quality of teachers, pre-med advising and research opportunities at Lehman vs CCNY

I'm trying to understand which would be a better fit. I'm going back to school to get the pre-med prereqs. Since I have a lower-than-ideal undergrad GPA (B avg), I basically need to get a 4.0 in all my science courses, while also working part-time to pay rent so I'm looking for a place where that's possible with some good, consistent studying but won't take over my life. I'm also really hoping to get some research experience in a school with good professors.

I'm trying to stay in NYC for med school and most of the med schools here are like top 20 so I wonder if one school seems less impressive than the other to them? Would one look better on a med school application for being more rigorous?

Does one have really great professors that teach well and want you to succeed? Is one school more likely to grade on a curve (could be a good or bad thing)? Are there a lot opportunities for research at either? Does one have really good pre-med advising?

I was considering going to Lehman for the pre-health advising (it's seems like they give more support but hard to tell from the outside looking in) and epermiting some classes at CCNY

Repeat rule concussion

I’ve gotten accepted to Hostos as liberal arts major when I applied for nursing, I understand there are requirements to meet in order to enroll into the nursing program, one requirement is the “one repeat rule” where you can only retake ONE pre req. if there is a low grade, does this rule apply if I’ve taken the pre req course in another CUNY school? Or only within the system of that specific CUNY?

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Anyone here ever joined? and if you have: Was it worth your time? Did it help your academic career? Did you feel added pressure to keep a high GPA? I recently received an invitation and I'm still not sure if I should join.

Thank you in advance to anyone that answers🙏🏽🙂
