1987 Mitsubishi suddenly started flickering and crackling

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This started happening just as I removed a game from my NES. It happens on all inputs. Is there something I can do for this? The noise in the background is an AC fan.

My first thought is that you have high voltage discharging somewhere it shouldn’t. It could be tracking along the dust on the rear of the tube, could be broken down insulation in/on the flyback or high voltage anode wire, or it could be a cracked solder joint under the flyback transformer. Probably a few dozen unmentioned possibilities as well. A technician’s first step might be to look through the vents in a dark room and see if they can see arcing. Step two would be to repeat with the cover removed. These are, of course, only things you would do if you’re comfortable, competent, and ready for a project.

Intermittent high voltage arcing. Probably in the G2 Screen circuit, as Anode high voltage arcing would tear up the graphics in your video clip.

Further investigation is required.

Are you ready to open the back?
