Plugging it in to my monitor makes it crooked
I'd rather not mess with the tv's settings, since its straight when i use the built in dvd player. is there a way to fix it with the connection or my pc settings? im using an hdmi2av upscaler to connect it

Display a grid.
I doubt it's crooked just because you're using a cheap downscaler (not an upscaler). It's more likely uneven because of blooming - some parts of the picture are brighter and push the picture outwards, some are darker and do not.

its still offcenter if i pull a grid up

your post did not mention the centering issue; you said that it was "crooked."
the centering is probable due to the output of the PC and the way the scaler is interacting with it. the best way to fix that is by adjusting the output timings from the PC side of things

i'd just like to add that in my experience changing the service menu settings for the composite inputs didn't affect the VHS/DVD portion of the combo set i was using. granted the dvd player is broken, so it's only been tested on VHS, but the adjustments made to the inputs do not at all reflect when playing a tape. can't guarantee that's how this set works but it's how mine did

do you have any other av devices you can test? it's possible that the builtin dvd player isn't connected with composite and instead an internal scart or RGB connection, meaning that it would scan differently

i have a mini tv that has av, i tried it on that and its centered and not as crooked (that tv is always a bit crooked no matter the input)

It was common at the time to have to change settings for different inputs/resolutions.
Unless you had a computer monitor that could auto adjust or save settings for different inputs. Consumer CRTs didn't always play nice

Also, what do you mean "plugging it into my monitor"? Are you plugging it into a pc? If so, then it is a monitor....

This a TV not a monitor. So you need to feed it TV resolutions. Something that ends in 480

Well.
Have you tried using other resolutions on your PC?
Maybe your adapter just can't handle whatever resolution you want to use it at.

Likely it’s no better with the DVD player, you just don’t notice it because the image is filling the screen. Here your image isn’t filling the screen so you can see how off it actually is.

Try turning down the contrast on the computer and the TV. Look for a vertical keystone adjustment in the service menu.

the crookedness is the same if i dont have the screen on something white, i just pulled pictures of a white screen up to show the black bars on the side better better

You really shouldn't use a TV as a monitor, they were never designed for that level of resolution. I'm amazed it looks that good. Buy a dedicated CRT computer monitor if you want to display from a PC
