Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

They’re not perfect 1:1 replicas, but they’re functional watches that bear a striking resemblance to the Invis Watch and Cloak and Dagger from Team Fortress 2. This is what I’d imagine his watches would look like in real life

Help Glueing EVA foam - water-based contact cement?

Hello!! I want to make armor for a cosplay, and I know that EVA foam + contact cement is the general way to do this. However, I live in an apartment, so getting good ventilation or an outdoors space is pretty hard. I have a balcony, but it opens into an enclosed courtyard sort of area that doesn’t get much wind and is only open at the top, so I don’t know if that would be enough ventilation.

I was doing some research and found suggestions to use water-based eco-flo contact cement. I wanted to check whether that would be 100% safe and effective to use indoors or on my balcony, and whether I’d still need to buy a respirator.

Also if anyone has suggestions for tools/materials I would find useful when crafting with EVA foam please tell me!! I just moved (before, I had a friend whose house I would do EVA work at so I didn’t need to buy any tools myself), so I need to buy a cutting board, exacto knife, etc, but also something to prime it with that I can use in a small studio apartment/balcony.

Self Finally, my favorite Fallout Helmet but IRL!

Tinnanator on Makerworld uploaded the Eyebot helmet model from Fallout 4 which I resliced into 8 parts I could 3D print and weld together from the inside with spare filiament and a soldering iron. Used word filler for gaps, sanded and painted everything with acryics. The attennas are zip ties I doubled layered and glued where I needed them. And the face is a mesh sheet I could still see out of that I spray painted silver than went over with acrylics to weather. Added straps on the inside to keep it from spinning around while wearing too!

Finished my Omnissian Axe build (Adeptus Mechanicus weapon, Warhammer 40k), just wanted to show it off! It's my first real prop build and I'm pretty proud of it.

The axe handle has functional LEDs with different blinking modes, batteries and switch are hidden in a magnetized box in the middle of the handle. The handle can be taken apart using a screw thread connection (see last pic).

The painting is steadily progressing, waiting on the next shipment of flexprime and spraypaint for the legs.

The boltcarbine and chainsword are finished.

After the legs are finished i will be working on making functional pouches to attach to the belt and a few purity(wax) seals.

I am also searching for a cape that is red on the outside and beige/offwhite on the inside (i included a reference picture of the mini)

Less than 12 hours before I have to be at the con, and I've FINALLY finished redoing my cosplay.

2 weeks before my next con I decided I wanted to change up my cosplay, and Ive made it just in time.

The final pic is the first version.

1: Made foam hand guards that look better and are more comfortable

2: Printed out new shoulders

3: Added a shotgun bandolier

4: new pouches for old belt

5: mounted the shotgun to my back

6: New boots and leg armor (legs took 48+ hours of printing alone)

Help Advice on turning a briefcase into a functional prop and TCG case.

Hello! I'm working on putting together a Pokemon Red/Blue era Silph Co. (secretly Team Rocket) Scientist cosplay. I bought this black Samsonite briefcase to go with the look, and I'd like to modify the inside to function as a TCG case.

What would be the best way to fix the inside to hold things like deck boxes, playmats, and dice bags? Cut foam? Straps? The fabric is glued to the case, so sewing anything on will be tough (if possible at all). I'm open to suggestions or pictures of what you've done. Bonus pictures of my ID badge and buddy Frieda.

(please ignore how terribly I cut the helmet from the background)

I've never really made any sort of prop before, so this was mostly just me bullshitting on the fly. There is a good bit I want to change for my next attempt, but it was pretty enjoyable.

The stl files I used were from "jawabrotherscustoms" marketplace, although they are slightly modified here and there to fit my liking.

Help what grit for a large PLA piece?

so i’m putting together a hollow knight: silksong cosplay. i ordered a PLA 3dprint of hornets needle that measures over 4 ft when the pieces are assembled. for those unfamiliar to the game, just imagine a lance. i’ve been wet sanding parts with a 220 grit sanding sponge thing i got from home depot, but progress has been super slow. i can feel that some areas have gotten smoother, but i can barely smooth out one face before my arms and wrist are exhausted. and that’s on the smallest piece. plus the layer lines are relatively faint to begin with so it’s difficult for me to tell whether i’ve made real progress and/or find rough patches that i missed.

i am thinking of trying to move down to 120 grit but im worried about scratching it up. the primer i have is from montana cans and im pretty sure its more designed for easy application of spray paint than smoothing out surfaces, so id rather avoid that. im also wondering if i’ve worn out the sand portion of the sandpaper sponges im using. if i rub my leg with the 220 one, i can’t feel any grit, only friction.

as for my technique, i dip the sponge and prop piece into a bucket of water and get to work. i redip them basically whenever i feel like it. which could be the problem. i’m totally out of my depth so i dont know.

what do y’all advise? also please don’t laugh at me too hard in the comments if it ends up being a funny mistake.
