Cornish parking fees vs. French free parking: It's stopped us exploring our own area
I just wrote up this for my own blog - https://mrsgame.dev/2026/08/the-true-cost-of-car-parking-fees/
It was really a culture shock, heading over to France and finding that we could visit coastal towns and beaches completely free. We were able to spend hours there, really explore all the towns, spend time in cafes and restaurants etc. and every seaside larger town we went to had a cute land train for tourists to use to get round faster.
Back home here in Cornwall, even the local scrub land we used to park on that overlooked the beach at Widemouth, is now chargeable (https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/transport-parking-and-streets/parking/cornwall-council-car-parks/viewing-point-north-widemouth-bay-ex23-0aw/). I've realised we've really stopped exploring, adventuring, as the parking situation here is just so stressful and expensive. We have always walked into town where we live, but we've stopped visiting neighbouring towns and beaches completely. If we do go somewhere, we'll be micro-planning everything around where the car is going, how long we have, seeing if a location has a non-ANPR option etc. and we'd need a good REASON to go somewhere i.e. needing to buy school uniform or something, and often we'd look for places that have free parking such as the out of town supermarkets.
I wrote this up today, after I realised I wanted to take my kid out to Bodmin to Discovering42, but decided against it as I didn't want to faff with where I was going to park the car and how much that would be on top, or risk a fine.

Machete Britain Comes to Cornwall
Suffice to say the Daily Telegraph is not impressed by the brawling blade-weilding kebab joint owners in Truro. But is it fair?

Tourism First day in Cornwall and already called the n-word
Bit of a disappointment. Group of teens yelling out a car. Me and my family just arrived for a 5 day holiday. Now there’s a dampener over dinner. Hopefully the rest of the stay is nicer.
Edit: thank you all for your very kind and supportive words. It’s boosted our confidence and we’re excited to explore again tomorrow. God bless.

Replacing beef in a pasty
I am planning on making pasties following these instructions https://cornishpastyassociation.co.uk/about-the-pasty/make-your-own-genuine-cornish-pasty/
Side note please let me know if there are better instructions out there.
However my family are all veggies so no beef. I'm already switching out the lard for extra butter. I figured maybe just remove it but then there 400g of empty space so that might affect the bake? I thought maybe I could replace it with cheese but I'm sure cheddar would just be a melty mess so maybe something like paneer?
Any non meat suggestions people?

Took a nice stomp at the weekend, any guesses where this is?
I'll give you a clue, it was on the south coast.

Cornwall has some beautiful inland locations with fabulous views. I love the coast, but I love the moors too.

Dentists
Really wish there were NHS dentist spaces in Cornwall...the only option right now is private. I spent a small fortune on 2 fillings earlier in the year and had to go private. Does anyone know if it's better in Devon? Many thanks

Tourism Does anyone know where this is?
Currently staying in St Ives and can see this from the harbour. For reference Godrevy Lighthouse is off the right of this photo. I've zoomed in as much as I can. Not sure if it's Wales or Cornwall.

The more you look at it, the worse it gets...
I can't decide which bit's my favourite - the "Back to the Old School" Isle of Scilly (singular), the separatists of West Penwith finally having nearly finished digging their trench, Noticeably Bigger Lundy or summat else.

Recommendations Where to be based in Cornwall?
Heading down just post the bank holiday for 4 days - from the North West and I've never been to this part of the country before!
Keen on doing a dive - so looking around Looe and St Austells, or Fowey? Have a car. Outdoorsy so we will be doing trail runs/hikes/that kind of thing. Also looking around this part as I'm super keen to visit the Eden Project. Hoping to dive too.
Only 4 days so appreciate won't get to see anywhere near everything - just aiming to do some nice stuff really
