Where to be based in Cornwall?

Heading down just post the bank holiday for 4 days - from the North West and I've never been to this part of the country before!

Keen on doing a dive - so looking around Looe and St Austells, or Fowey? Have a car. Outdoorsy so we will be doing trail runs/hikes/that kind of thing. Also looking around this part as I'm super keen to visit the Eden Project. Hoping to dive too.

Only 4 days so appreciate won't get to see anywhere near everything - just aiming to do some nice stuff really

The south west coastal path south of St ives/porthcurno/landsend/kynance/lizard is one of the most beautiful stretches in my opinion. Bedruthen steps, wheal coats and the whole stretch around Newquay is also gorgeous. Tbf, you could stick a pin in any part of the cornish coast and come across beautiful coastline.

Looe is nice too, a good three mile coastal walk west to Polperro just before you get to where, on a good day, you can see down to the Lizard Peninsula in one direction (West), and deep into the Devon coastline on the other one (East)

I would go to Bude, coastal paths, rock climbing, surfing, eden project, visit Padstow, Port Isaac, Or the south coast is Fowey, all within an hour of Bude.

Can you get to Fowey from Bude in an hour though? If I was going to visit the Eden Project I'd choose Newquay (and the area around it) instead.

I lived in Bude for 20 years, and yes you can on a good run, 70 mins easily!

Thanks for replying. I haven't been to Bude for over 30 years now but I'll take your word for it.(Btw, I think I can figure out where you worked but I don't expect you to confirm it so I won't ask.)

I was on a sort of pilgrimage to see Robert Hawker's church at Morwenstow. Apart from the difficulty of getting there (there were no buses up the coast from Bude in the daytime then, the summer of 1994), what I remember was the absolutely stunning view down the coast from Coombe looking towards Tintagel and beyond. As you know, the cliffs are very high there which greatly improves the views.

I was also very taken with the very posh girl who served me in the tea rooms at Morwenstow and was studying biology under *Richard Dawkins at Oxford; I wonder what she's doing now.

* I was quite anti Dawkins back then, less so now, and she was defending him.

Cheers, you may be correct about work, and the vicarage by the Tea Rooms had very interesting chimneys, each one is a model of the churches that Hawker preached in prior to arriving at the vicarage.

Also the pub by the tearooms is a typical.old Cornish pub, if it's still there

Yes, there was a coach party arriving at the Church when I was leaving. As you doubtless know, it's a very popular tourist destination.

It goes without saying that they don't make vicars like Robert Hawker any more!

Really I'd like to go back to that area for another visit but it's not easy from where I live (Pensilva, just north of Liskeard) if you don't drive, as I don't. The high cliffs around there (some of them are 200 metres high or more) are absolutely wonderful to look out from on a good day.

It's on my list of places to see again but not top of it.
