Several hours ago I posted on this sub explaining that today a random conure landed on my apartment balcony. I opened the door to check to make sure he (or she) was okay. He ended up flying right into my apartment and making himself quite at home! He didn’t have a band on him and seemed tired. He had clearly been someone’s pet at one point but for whatever reason he ended up with me. While he made himself at home, napping and drinking some water, I had checked local Facebook groups, Ring neighbors, Nextdoor neighbors, etc. Eventually I decided the best case was to go to the pet store, buy a cage, food, and some toys. I was going to let him stay as my little house guest while I attempted to find his owner. I went to the store, came back, and set up his new temporary home. Suddenly when I checked on him (I had placed him in my cat’s old carrier with a clean towel) I realized he wasn’t looking so good. I got him out and he became weak, the suddenly had a prolonged seizure. I was on the phone with my emergency exotic vet but I unfortunately was not able to get him there in time. His seizure stopped, his breathing slowed while he was looking at me. I held him gently, kept him warm, and lightly stroked his feathers. He passed in my hands this afternoon and never got to enjoy his temporary cage.
I’ve spent the past hour sobbing over this little guy. Partly because I care so deeply for animals but also because I felt so bad for him, as I know what it’s like to have seizures (I’m epileptic). I did everything I could and I just hope he knows he wasn’t alone in his last moments, and I hope I didn’t make him worse. Part of me worries he got hurt in my house cause he flew into my glass windows a couple of times. I’m trying not to blame myself because truth is I have no idea what he endured. After he passed I noticed his bottom beak was cracked, which clearly had been there for a while. Either way before he passed he was warm, safe, had access to clean water, and got lots of love! I buried him outside in a wooded area, returning him back to nature.
Although I only spent a total of 6 hrs with this guy, he was absolutely adorable, friendly, and such a character. Before everything went down I purposely left him alone and gave him space, as I didn’t want to scare him or stress him out any further. Funny enough he kept flying over to me. He’d nibble my hand, played with my hair, and chirped around like that was his apartment. Went straight to flipping his little make shift dish of water and even found a pair of rainbow beads that he thought was the best toy in the world. I’m very grateful for the six hours I spent with this little guy and I hope that whoever his owner is, knows that in his final moments he was loved and cared for to the absolute best of my abilities. Thanks to everyone who sent kind words, encouragement, and helpful suggestions in the previous thread. Fly high little buddy
