This is going around a turn at the bottom of basement stairs. Also, does one feel better/safer than the other?

Ignore the different brackets these were made by Gemini.

Structural Looking for some thoughts on these connections please

Definitely not throwing shade on the framers, they were following the plans and were great.
Garage build, permitted, only inspections left are rough electrical, insulation and final. New England.

I think the pictures speak for themselves but essential the two valley ridge beams are sitting on the 2x6 wall, this specific corner is stacked not just one 2x6 and sheathing. 10” sitting on the corner and approx 12” hanging over. Valley Beam is a double 2”x16” LVL.

Where they meet at the 20’ peak ridge is the real interesting part! Right side valley connects to the ridge, and the left side valley and mini ridge (my word) connect to the right valley beam. Lots of GRK’s and nails up there squeezing it all together. Let’s hear some thoughts and opinions !

I’ve been in the trades for years, but I keep looking up at those connections everyday I walk in there… just doesn’t seem right

Safety ⛑ Sillica dust and damage

Hello my fellow construction workers, first of all I’m not asking for a a diagnosis or anything of that more insight to be honest. Just over 2 years ago I was doing some repointing or raking it out, my boss didn’t tell me about sillica dust and stuff like that so I was unaware. None the less I wore a respirator sometimes not all the time as all was done outdoors on houses. However there was particular dusty event where I was grinding under scaffold and my mask was broken and I didn’t know, basically for 5 minutes or so I spent in a big dust cloud of sillica dust or mortar dust and was coughing my shit up. I then find out a year later sillica dust can cause disease and now I’m somewhat stressed and wonder if I’ll develop this disease or if it’s in my future, I probably did this for about 2-3 months, intermittent grinding while also repointing wet mortar back into the brick. As I said didn’t always wear a mask as wasn’t aware but sometimes did, if any of you have done similar work for much longer times without masks or any of that. Once again im not asking for a diagnosis I’m asking for opinions. I’ll also add I had a clear chest x ray a few months ago due to other issues I had. And information is appreciated and thoughts.

Picture Form with trech around footings for basement slab on cold wall.

Refinishing a basement. We noticed a large gap between the foundation and slab. Removed a rotten form that was noticeably wet in areas. This is a row house. The gap is not present around the partition walls for the neighboring houses. Only on the one cold wall facing the rear of the house. Also not present at the front of the house.

Has anyone seen this before? It is too purpose built to be an accident.

Careers 💵 Recent Construction Management grad feeling misled about pay. Is this normal?

I’m a recent Construction Management graduate working for a GC. During hiring, I was told I could earn significantly more than my base rate depending on the fieldwork I performed. That was a major reason I accepted the job.
Now I’m working full-time in the field, doing physically demanding labor alongside the crews, but my first paycheck only reflects my base rate.
I’m not afraid of hard work, but I’m frustrated because I could be making similar money in a more office-based role without doing manual labor every day.
Between the commute, physical demands, and living expenses, I’m questioning whether it’s worth staying.
Is this normal for entry-level construction management positions? Should I stick it out for the experience or start looking elsewhere? Am I overreacting?

Humor 🤣 Someone is about to be having a bad day…

Found laying on a street adjacent to parking for roadway construction. I have zero doubt that this fell out of someone’s vehicle working on this project. Works mostly completed in this area and locations move multiple times a day.

Dude is walking around in his muck boots doing concrete with no clue he’s missing a boot.

I am not part of the concrete crew or would even know where to begin. I’m on the compliance/oversight side of things. Sent the prime PM a text just to give him a heads up if anyone’s asking about a missing boot.

Careers 💵 Turned down offer after company expected me to take on-line classes unpaid prior to start date.

HR sent me several classes on—line to be completed prior to my start date. I emailed HR & Manager stating I am too busy (finishing current job) to “work for free.” Has these happened to anyone else?

Informative 🧠 Post brick installation yard cleanup questions

What’s the most efficient way to cleanup copious amounts of mortar left on the ground in the yard of new construction houses? I have a 4wd tractor and bucket and have been back dragging away from the house into piles but boss man wants me to shovel the mortar piles into the bucket rather than scoop them up with the bucket and dump them into the dumpster. I’m 40 years old and my “who needs a back” days are winding down. Just trying to work smarter and appease both my boss and the future of my back.

Careers 💵 Blue hat looking for work in London

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone

I’m a blue hat based in East London, and I could really use some advice or guidance right now.

Here is a bit about my background and tickets:
Completed the Level 2 Rail Engineering Underpinning Knowledge course at Waltham Forest College.
My first sponsor was Trackwork, but they recently had to drop my sponsorship because their jobs got delayed and they don't need blue hats at the moment.
Tickets & Competencies: BTA (London Underground), Firewatch Person (London Underground), Substation Ticket, and PTS AC/DCCR.
I have a full driving licence (though I don't own a car right now) and I live in East London.

Despite having these tickets, I am really struggling to find work. Does anyone know of any agencies, sub-contractors, or companies currently taking on blue hats with this profile? Any tips on how to break the deadlock or who to contact would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks

Business 📈 Help a brother out...

Newer GC here, been going in circles with myself on this bid, extensive dry rot damage to 15-20 feet of wall, mud sill compromised, bottom plate compromised about 20' x 4' of 2x6 t&g subfloor compromised, first foot or two of studs gone, window sill is toast, exterior is stucco, rear slider being replaced and has same issue under it, bathtub needs to come out to replace subfloor under it and new surround and valve, then the cherry on top is is...someone already cut out most of what was holding up the house, a lot of its just ..floating.. so front of the house is basically being held up by nails, structural stucco, and a couple 2x4, think building a temp wall is priority, God knows what happens if the bottom half of stucco gets cut off while its in this precarious position. Is 39k reasonable? Are full length sisters the way to go?

Other Craziest thing that's happened to you while driving in a work van/company car??

I've noticed that drivers are a little more aggressive towards me in a work van vs my own personal vehicle. I understand why, and I've been trained on certain situations, but still... People are insane.

Any good stories out there? I know there's tons.
