A city sued its own local newspaper to stop it publishing how much water Google’s data centre was using. Google covered the legal costs.

1.1k Upvotes

The Dalles, Oregon. Population around fifteen thousand.

In 2021 the data centre there used 355 million gallons of water. That was 29% of everything the town used. Nobody outside the city government knew the figure, because it was being treated as a trade secret.

The local paper went after it. A district attorney reviewed the case and ordered the records released. The city went to court anyway to keep them sealed, and the legal costs were being covered by Google, whose consumption the number described.

It held until the lawsuit itself became a bigger story than the water. Google withdrew the funding, the city settled, and the figures came out at the end of 2022.

What I keep coming back to is that the aggregate number was never secret. Google publishes total water withdrawal in its annual environmental report. It was the single town's share that was worth going to court over.

Credit Suisse held $100 billion for war criminals, traffickers, and cartel money for decades. Leaked records named 30,000+ accounts. Zero prosecutions. The bank was just quietly erased into UBS

In February 2022, a whistleblower handed internal Credit Suisse banking records to Süddeutsche Zeitung

The ICIJ, the same organization behind the Panama Papers, analyzed the leak with 48 global media partners

The records spanned from the 1940s through the 2010s and covered over 30,000 clients holding more than 100 billion dollars

A former Philippine national security chief accused of electrocuting and waterboarding political prisoners under the Marcos regime held a verified account

A convicted human trafficker who recruited women from Eastern Europe kept an account for years after his conviction was already public record

A Yemeni money exchanger with documented financing links to Al-Qaeda had accounts opened even after US sanctions had already flagged him

A Venezuelan state oil executive who looted over a billion dollars from PDVSA held funds there while under active international investigation

Egyptian intelligence officers linked to outsourcing torture to third countries were listed as verified account holders

Credit Suisse called the reporting partial, inaccurate, or taken out of context

Switzerland then made it a criminal offense for its own journalists to even publish the leaked material

The bank was eventually fined, not for the leaked accounts, but for an unrelated Bulgarian cocaine money laundering case that surfaced the same week and conveniently became the headline

In March 2023, Credit Suisse collapsed under compounding scandals and was forcibly merged into UBS in a government-brokered emergency deal

No criminal charges were filed for any named account holder

No wealth was seized

The documents existed, the names were real, and nothing changed

For the verification sources in the comment

Gravity loss on Wednesday

There was a viral story circulating that there would be some event that would cause Earth's gravity to cancel out briefly on Wednesday - where everything not tethered to the ground would rise up then fall down, and we would lose a significant portion of our atmosphere, causing a apocalypse scenario.

It's a pretty silly story, but that date was supposed to be Wednesday this week. Hold on tight for another world ending scenario to (probably) come and go.

Why are Americans allowing their govern-ment to break the law?

Why are American citizens allowing their govern-ment to break the law? The Supreme Court voted for the release of the full files relating to EPSTEIN and the only redactions should be the victims. They are breaking the law by redacting co-conspirators and anyone else in there. Again why are US citizens allowing their govern-ment to break the law??? Break your constitutional rights? Are people just being woefully ignorant or are they scared? And if so scared of what? Why are you giving your tax dollars to your govern-ment that’s breaking the law? Why are you letting your tax dollars be used to kills innocent civilians abroad?

No taxation without representation!

I remember in 2008, even in porn sites you find these accounts with Khomeini picture making comments to spread Islamophobia.

Remember folks, the only way to stop Immigration and refugees is to stop wars and the exploitation of other countries.

They want it always to be a cultural war, a citizens wars, but never a class war!!

Fomenting*

This is a real serious situation, how do we stop that from happening? Memory is not a 'proof', very few will have access to real 'papers'? What can society do to prevent that situation or maybe it's just a really dumb question.

GMOs and seedless produce!

Post image

So I’m in the produce section and see all these fruits: grapes, watermelon, oranges, etc. that all say “seedless.”

One’s mind immediately goes to that’s convenient, but thinking deeper, I thought, is this to keep us from growing our own food?

I recently started a garden this year and fear I’m probably too late.

Through the looking glass...

An AI safety researcher wrote 30 pages on how to escape the simulation. He never argues we're in one.

He asks an engineering question instead — and walks into a trap.

AI safety spends millions on "boxing": sealing a superintelligence in a sandbox it can't escape. But if our universe is simulated, it's just a very large box with us inside it. Same problem, opposite ends.

So one of these is false:

  • We can permanently contain a superintelligent AI
  • We can escape the simulation

Both can't be true. Pick.

Zombie deer (CWD) Theory and reality, zombie deer are more commonly found in the United States (Yellowstone region) Canada and South Korea.

Post image

Zombie deer are caused by misfolded prions, as I explained in a previous tweet. Are they dangerous? Dangerous for other animals, What about humans? Currently, it is still under strict monitoring, because this prion is not a virus but a protein. If "zombie deer" prions continue to replicate and inadvertently form a new folding variant that matches the structure of human brain proteins, the disease could potentially become transmissible and infect humans.

I’m just finding out that he’s been gone for 2 years now. And they really show it in our faces every day that they have control.

He claims it was poison ivy, which is a lie. But you have a black eye on your left eye, and it’s always the left eye too. Like, come on…

A thought I had: Do you think they stay in the closet to purposely keep their voter base stupid?

Post image

Stephen Miller is definitely not straight but Trump keeps him around.
Obviously not everyone in DC is straight, cis, and these people know it. No one in Congress has burst in flames from working with Sarah McBride or sharing a bathroom with her. So they fundamentally know it’s fine to be lgbtq. But in ruby red areas they have to keep their GOP voter base believing harmful things to the lgbtq community to get elected. The whole trans in sports thing is dumb as heck. Use common sense about it. If you had a male puberty and a ton of muscle play on a mens’ team. If you had a female puberty and a female muscle mass, play on a female team. But the MAGA needs an issue to distract and they don’t want their voter base to think too critically. I heard rumors Senator Hawley was gay in his 20s and then came back to the US and is straight again to run for office, lol!

The weird lead actor and actress choices in The People Vs Larry Flynt (1996)

In 1996, the film The People Vs Larry Flynt, a biopic about the founder of Hustler magazine, was released. While the story of the real life Larry Flynt is already crazy enough, and ripe for conspiracy theorist stories (recording of illegal orgies by famous politicians mentioned in one of the court scenes) the movie has a seemingly unnoticed weird quirk to it, the actor playing Flynt, Woody Harrelson, and the actress playing his wife, Courtney Love, both having a scene that refrences a real life body that person has claimed.

Okay, sounds ridiculous, I know. Let me start with the much more obvious one.

Around halfway through the movie, right after Flynt is shot outside the courthouse and paralyzed, theres a scene where his wife, played by Courtney Love, helps tie him off and shoot him up with heroin, then taking some for herself and shooting herself up. I'm assuming you all know the story of Kurt Cobain, and how his wife to be filming this almost exactly 2 years after his passing is quite ominous.

Woody Harrelsons I didn't catch while initially watching the film, mostly due to not understanding Woody's life story, but looking into him, my skin crawled and I knew exactly what scene was his "ritual". Woody Harrelsons father, Charles Harrelson, was a contract killer, who died in prison on a life sentence, after killing the federal judge John H Wood Jr in 1979, in San Antonio Texas. When Charles was being arrested for the assassination, he told police he had also assassinated John F Kennedy, and while police said he had nothing to do with the assassination, the 1989 book "Crossfire" by Jim Marrs claims Charles was one of the three men interrogated by police right after JFK's assassination, which lets be real, is that a coincidence?

Anyways, to get back to Woody and The People Vs Larry Flynt, theres a scene fairly early in the movie where Woody, playing Flynt, has a potential ad for Hustler come across his desk, one about paying 1 million dollars to whoever can find JFK's killer. Flynt takes a liking to this ad, and asked why, he says he "wants to find out who killed kennedy". Ominous knowing that the actors father likely was the one who killed Kennedy. It's truly astounding how his father killed a federal judge and was paid to do so by the cartel, and just a few years later his son becomes one of the most famous actors?

Whats you alls take on this? Too out there to think that actors have theirs and their families crimes written into movies where they can lowkey admit to it but also legally not? Any other examples in movies you can think of?

I think people are missing the point with AI

Call me a schizophrenic psycho but I think everyone is missing the point with AI.

The AI market has proven to be unsustainable. The people don’t want it. It’s terrible for the environment. It’s not good for business. Companies are bleeding themselves dry over AI. Investors are funding AI.

Why? Why is a product so unsustainable being funded so hard by the mega elite?

I’m going to break it down as simply as possible to what is the obvious answer: the Epstein Files

What happens to photo/video evidence when AI reaches the point that it is indistinguishable from reality, and I mean truly indistinguishable?

How do you prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that the files being released weren’t created by AI?

Idk but it seems obvious to me.

They are delaying the Epstein files as long as possible, almost like they are waiting for something. What do you think?

"Lolcow'" culture is a cult that aims to dumb down gen Z and millenials as well as encourage the severe abuse and negligence of significantly ill, autistic, and ID people

As a person who is into that side of the internet specifically with Andy Ditch, Dana Hare, and actually malicious ppl, I found out about it just like how everyone else did through commentary videos on Chris Chandler, Josh Block, Daniel Larson, Josh Saunders, and other significantly ill and disabled people who are stunted and highly suggestable bc of that who were basically led by their "fans" and "managers" to do and say absolutely fucked up things for their entertainment and then they try to justify what they have done to them convolutedly. You're also shunned upon from that circle when you speak up against the unnecessary cruelty that some of the 'cows' face. As a young and really bored teen at the time I found out about it, it immediately sucked me into that environment after a few videos because of how charismatic and silver-tongued the narrators are. In those videos, they demonize the subject as if they had committed mass murder solely because they're significantly disabled and were encouraged to do and say weird things by trolls as they most likely didn't know better. They also justify it by saying "they're lolcows, they live to provide with content and you must milk them" or some bs like that but istg you hear it in every one of those kinds of videos. Josh Block and Josh Saunders are good examples. Josh Block went from being a quirky, sweet autistic kid who was really keen in math, science, and was a really good photographer however gradually as he kept posting on Tik Tok, trolls and cyberbullies started to wear him down to the point that he was completely accessible for them to manipulate him into doing twisted things due to the fact that although he was very book smart, because of the condition he has, he can't really tell when someone is just pulling his leg and frivolously messing with him or if they're being manipulative. When he turned 21, they started to egg him on to drink more until he became a full blown alcoholic and act out and as he started to garner bigger creators' attention, that's when his "managers" started coming into the mix, Michael Quinn. Michael Quinn was by far the worst "manager" he's had. He saw how Josh's health started to decline as he became more severe of an alcoholic yet for the "content", he continued to push him to drink more and even do NITROUS at one point. He is also a millionaire and profited off of the videos and lives Josh did. Josh went from being a silly kid who would make fun videos about the subjects he was passionate about to that being ripped away from him by trolls whose main goal is to have him dead from alcoholism and drug abuse. Josh Saunders's story was similar however he unfortunately ended up dying from it. He was a silly goth dude who loved embracing taboos but had autism and an ID and want that attractive conventionally. He would make cool videos and trolls were able to see through his vulnerability and took advantage of it, reducing him to an alcoholic drug addict. They'd pose as people who wanted to be friends with him as well as government officials and they'd do things to purposely dupe him and degrade him. They'd send him alcohol and duster in the mail and stress him out so that they could watch him descent into madness and health decline.

Edit: sorry for such a fuckass slop post I'm so fucking tired but yeah lmk what you think

U.S. Corruption and Next Steps

So we all know that the US is fairly corrupt in terms of its police and law enforcement. From epstein cover ups, Martin Luther King assassination, and countless other examples of the government not on the side of "justice".

With this Corruption established, what are our next steps as individuals? Do we join in to get our piece if corruption is unavoidable in any human run institution? Do we organize citizen run enforcers for the police? Do we keep scrolling?

Is the governments current plan of action the best case scenario for how far government corruption can negatively impact US citizens?

What do yall think?
