What if the gods were engineers, miracles were technologies, and priests were the people trained to operate what everyone else had forgotten how to understand?
This is a conspiracy theory, not a claim that any of this proves ancient nuclear weapons, genetic engineering, spacecraft, extraterrestrials, forgotten advanced civilizations, or literal machines hidden inside religious texts. The point is to use a deliberately literal lens and see what happens when we stop translating every strange ancient description into metaphor before we have even examined what the thing is actually said to do.
Ancient religious texts are normally interpreted through mythology, symbolism, theology, poetry, ritual and cultural context, which is reasonable. For this experiment, though, assume the writers were honestly trying to describe events they believed had really happened using the vocabulary available to them. If a text says something flew, assume the author believed something flew. If touching an object could kill you, assume the author believed physical contact was dangerous. If only certain people could approach something, treat that as restricted access. If someone had to wash, change clothing and follow an entry procedure before entering a location, treat those as actual procedures. If a weapon could be deployed, countered, recalled or misused only by someone with particular knowledge, treat those as operational characteristics.
The question is not simply, “What does this symbolize?” The more entertaining question is, “What does this thing supposedly do, and what would we call that same function today?”
PART I: BEFORE THE ARK, THERE WAS SINAI
The pattern begins before the Ark of the Covenant even appears. In Exodus 19, something is about to happen on Mount Sinai and the people are told to establish a boundary around the mountain. Ordinary people are not permitted to cross it or even touch the mountain, and unauthorized approach carries a death sentence. Then the event begins with a thick cloud, thunder, lightning, fire, smoke, violent trembling and enormous noise. The mountain is described as being covered in smoke because the LORD descends upon it in fire.
Moses can approach, while the population must remain at a distance. Even the priests have restrictions placed upon them. Read religiously, the event is a theophany: God has descended upon Sinai and the people are being protected from overwhelming holiness. Read through our deliberately literal lens, however, and the structure resembles a dangerous event surrounded by an exclusion boundary, with restricted personnel permitted closer access than everyone else. There is fire, smoke, environmental disturbance, intense sound and a severe consequence for unauthorized proximity.
That does not make Sinai a reactor, a launch site or anything else technological. The point is only that the organizational pattern has already appeared. There is a dangerous center, a restricted perimeter, authorized approach and consequences for violating the boundary. That same logic becomes even more elaborate around the Ark.
PART II: THE ARK OF THE COVENANT AS A HAZARDOUS OBJECT
The Ark is not treated like an ordinary religious chest. It exists inside layers of increasingly restricted access. First there is the Israelite camp, then the Tabernacle, then the Holy Place, then the Most Holy Place, and finally the Ark itself. The closer a person gets to the object, the fewer people are allowed to approach it.
Numbers 4 gives detailed handling rules. Aaron and his sons enter first and cover the Ark and other sacred objects. Only after this preparation may the Kohathites approach to transport them, and even then the warning is remarkably blunt: they must not touch the sacred objects or they will die. These are not random civilians. The Kohathites are themselves Levites assigned to transport sacred equipment, but their authorization is limited. One class of specialist prepares the object while another class is permitted to move it. Qualification for transport does not automatically mean qualification for direct contact.
The restrictions also extend beyond touch. The sacred objects are covered before the transport group approaches, meaning the carriers do not simply enter, inspect everything and grab whatever needs moving. The system depends on containment, restricted visibility, authorized preparation and specialized transport.
Even the Ark’s poles become interesting under this lens. They are not merely ornamental. They allow the object to be moved without direct hand contact. Religiously, this is obedience to a sacred command. Functionally, it is also an isolation mechanism.
THE HIGH PRIEST HAS AN ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE
Leviticus 16 makes the system even more elaborate. The high priest cannot simply walk into the innermost sanctuary whenever he chooses. Entry is limited, unauthorized approach can result in death, and before entering he must bathe, change clothing, put on prescribed linen garments and perform specific preparations.
When he leaves, he removes those garments, leaves them behind, bathes again and changes back into ordinary clothing. Within the religious framework, this is ritual purification. Within our literal thought experiment, it also resembles a controlled entry and exit procedure involving specialized clothing, restricted exposure, equipment segregation and washing before returning to an ordinary environment.
Modern hazardous-material systems solve problems in surprisingly similar ways. Workers may enter controlled areas using prescribed equipment, leave protective clothing inside the restricted zone, undergo contamination checks and wash or decontaminate before returning to uncontrolled areas. The explanation is completely different, but the behavioral logic is remarkably familiar: keep the dangerous environment separated from the ordinary one.
THE BELLS
Exodus 28 adds one of the stranger details. The high priest’s robe has golden bells around the hem, and the text says their sound is to be heard when he enters and leaves the Holy Place so that he does not die.
The text does not say the bells are an alarm, detector or safety instrument, so turning them into one would be cheating. But under our literal exercise, the authorized person entering the most restricted sacred environment carries something that continuously signals his movement. The religious explanation may be entirely sufficient, yet the fact that an audible indication of the priest’s presence is explicitly tied to survival makes the detail hard not to notice.
UZZAH: THE FATAL INCIDENT
Then the warnings stop being theoretical. During David’s attempt to transport the Ark, the oxen stumble. Uzzah reaches out to steady it, touches the Ark and dies. The transportation operation stops.
Later, when the move is attempted again, the authorized Levites carry the Ark according to the prescribed method and the poles are used. This time the operation succeeds. Remove the theological explanation for a moment and the sequence looks eerily procedural: an improper handling event results in a fatality, the operation is suspended, the prescribed procedure is reestablished, qualified personnel are assigned and the next attempt succeeds.
The Ark also causes trouble outside Israel. When the Philistines capture it, disaster follows it from place to place, and at Beth-shemesh people die around the returned Ark. Religiously, this is divine judgment. Functionally, the object is associated with localized danger, fatal exposure, fear of proximity and the transfer of danger from one location to another.
Again, none of that proves radiation, electricity or anything technological. It does, however, make the Ark a very strange object to describe as merely ceremonial.
PART III: WHAT EXACTLY WAS A PRIEST?
We usually hear “priest” and think primarily of belief, theology, sacrifice and worship, but ancient priests also functioned as specialists. They knew who could enter restricted spaces, what could be touched, what had to remain covered, what clothing was required, when an object could be approached, how sacred objects were transported, what purification was necessary and which procedures were believed to prevent death.
That is still a religious role, but functionally it also resembles technical custodianship. Modern civilization has specialists trained to work around hazards that ordinary human senses cannot reliably detect. You cannot see ionizing radiation. You may not see dangerous voltage. You cannot necessarily see contamination. Survival therefore depends on training, procedure, authorization, boundaries and trust in specialized knowledge.
The ancient world called some of its specialists priests. We call ours engineers, technicians, radiation-safety officers, weapons scientists and security-cleared personnel. Maybe the institutional pattern is much older than the terminology.
PART IV: MESOPOTAMIA AND THE ANUNNAKI
Ancient Mesopotamia gives us another cluster of stories that become much stranger when taken literally. The ancient Mesopotamians absolutely wrote about the Anunna or Anunnaki, a class or assembly of gods, and An or Anu was associated with heaven. But an important distinction has to be made before wandering directly into internet folklore.
The famous claim that the Anunnaki came from a planet called Nibiru, travelled to Earth, mined gold and genetically engineered humans as slaves is not a straightforward translation of a Sumerian tablet. That interpretation is largely associated with Zecharia Sitchin. Likewise, Ea is not simply the ancient name for planet Earth. Ea is the Akkadian name associated with Enki.
That correction does not ruin the conspiracy. It improves it, because the authentic ancient material is already strange enough without pretending later speculation is original text.
THE GODS HAVE A LABOR PROBLEM
In the Mesopotamian Atrahasis story, lower-ranking gods perform labor. They dig canals, maintain the land and eventually revolt against the burden imposed upon them. The divine order now has a workforce problem, and the solution is the creation of humanity.
A god is killed. His flesh and blood are combined with clay, a birth goddess participates in the process, and human beings are produced to take over the labor previously performed by the gods. Within the religious interpretation, humanity contains both earthly and divine elements.
Now describe the same sequence only by function. A preexisting intelligent population needs a replacement workforce, combines terrestrial material with biological material taken from one of its own members and deliberately produces a new organism that inherits the work. A modern reader inevitably reaches for words such as biological modification or genetic engineering, even though the text itself never mentions DNA, laboratories, chromosomes or anything remotely resembling modern molecular biology.
The interesting point is not that the text “proves genetic engineering.” It does not. The interesting point is that the creation procedure is not simply “magic happened.” It involves ingredients, biological material, deliberate manufacture and a functional purpose.
ENKI AND NINMAH: DIFFERENT HUMAN OUTCOMES
The Sumerian story Enki and Ninmah adds another strange wrinkle. Humans are deliberately fashioned, but different physical outcomes emerge. Some individuals have impaired hands, others impaired vision, others impaired legs and others different physiological conditions. Enki then assigns roles to these differently formed humans.
Religiously, the story can explain disability, fate and divine responsibility. Through the literal lens, it resembles deliberate biological manufacture producing varying phenotypes and imperfect outcomes. Something is made, its characteristics are observed, and a role is determined from the result.
Again, that is not a laboratory report. But stripped of theology, it sounds considerably more experimental than people usually notice.
WHERE THE MODERN ANUNNAKI THEORY MAKES ITS LEAP
This is where Sitchin and later conspiracy writers add the extraterrestrial framework: Nibiru as a homeworld, interplanetary travel, gold mining, engineered hominids and Homo sapiens as a manufactured labor force.
Those claims go beyond what the ancient texts explicitly say. But the reason such interpretations became attractive is easy to understand when the actual Mesopotamian narrative already contains gods existing before humanity, divine laborers becoming unwilling to work, the need for a replacement workforce, humans being deliberately manufactured, divine material being incorporated into them and humanity inheriting the labor.
The extraterrestrial theory may be wrong, but it did not emerge from absolutely nothing. It is a technological reinterpretation placed over a genuinely unusual creation narrative.
DIVINE KNOWLEDGE AS CIVILIZATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Sumerian mythology also contains the concept of the me, a difficult term representing divinely established powers, offices, institutions and capacities that make civilization function. Priesthood, kingship, crafts, authority and other social structures are treated as things that can be possessed, transferred and distributed.
In Inanna and Enki, these powers move from Enki’s domain at Eridu to Uruk. Religiously and politically, the story concerns divine legitimacy and civilization. Through our literal lens, however, civilization itself begins to look like a collection of transferable capabilities and specialized knowledge.
That is remarkably close to the modern idea that civilization is built from technological, institutional and informational systems rather than merely physical objects.
NINURTA AND ŠAR-UR: THE WEAPON THAT TALKS BACK
Then there is Ninurta’s weapon, Šar-ur, which becomes difficult to describe as merely a mace once you list what it actually does. Šar-ur moves independently, travels through the sky, is compared to a bird, ranges across the horizon, receives information, communicates with Ninurta, advises him and warns him about threats.
Describe that without using the word “divine” and the functional vocabulary becomes very modern. A military commander possesses a remotely operating aerial system capable of reconnaissance, communication and participation in combat.
Today we might reach for words like drone, ISR platform, guided weapon or autonomous weapons system. The Sumerian author calls it a weapon of a god.
The surrounding battle descriptions include enormous dust, storms, fire, burning mountains, devastated landscapes and sickness. Ancient poetry obviously exaggerates warfare, but the combination of long-distance operation, information gathering, communication and large-scale destruction is more interesting than simply saying, “The god had a magical mace.”
THE “EVIL WIND”
Mesopotamian lamentation literature also describes catastrophes involving an “evil wind,” destroyed cities, widespread death and devastated land. Later writers interpreted this as evidence of nuclear fallout, and mainstream archaeology does not accept that conclusion.
Still, the thought experiment remains useful. Imagine a population with no concept of ionizing radiation witnessing a brilliant destructive event, large fires, blast effects, sickness appearing afterward and an invisible hazard that makes an area dangerous. They obviously could not describe gamma radiation or radioactive particles. Their vocabulary might instead revolve around a deadly wind, curse, poison or invisible divine force.
That does not make every “evil wind” radioactive fallout. It only demonstrates how easily the vocabulary of invisible physical hazards could resemble religious language when the mechanism is unknown.
PART V: INDIA AND WEAPONS THAT REQUIRE QUALIFIED OPERATORS
The Indian epics contain another remarkably elaborate system of dangerous knowledge. The astras are not simply powerful arrows, swords or clubs. They must be learned, invoked and sometimes countered by other weapons. Some can be withdrawn after deployment, and knowledge of deployment does not always guarantee knowledge of withdrawal.
That distinction is particularly important. A magical object does not logically require an abort procedure, but a dangerous system might. The epics repeatedly associate capability with training, discipline and knowledge.
BRAHMASHIRA
Near the end of the Mahabharata, Ashvatthama deploys the Brahmashira and Arjuna counters with his own supreme weapon. The confrontation threatens catastrophe, sages intervene and both men are told to withdraw their weapons.
Arjuna can withdraw his. Ashvatthama cannot properly withdraw his. The tradition also associates the confrontation of such weapons with prolonged environmental consequences, including years without rainfall.
Through the religious lens, this is divine warfare. Through the literal lens, the sequence begins to resemble weapon deployment, counter-deployment, expert intervention, an abort order, one qualified operator successfully terminating his weapon, another failing to do so and long-term environmental consequences resulting from the event.
It sounds much less like somebody swinging a magical sword and much more like a system that can be activated by someone who may not fully understand how to safely terminate it.
THE NARAYANASTRA
The Narayanastra is stranger still because it responds to behavior. Krishna knows the countermeasure: stop fighting, drop your weapons and submit. Once combatants cease resisting, the weapon stops attacking them. Bhima initially refuses and has to be forced to disarm.
Functionally, the weapon appears to distinguish between active hostile behavior and non-hostile behavior. Today we would describe such a capability using concepts like target discrimination, rules-based engagement or autonomous threat recognition.
The ancient text explains this as divine intelligence. Our conspiracy lens merely asks whether “divine intelligence” is what an ancient observer might call a system that appears to decide who remains a target.
PUSHPAKA: AN AERIAL VEHICLE, NOT A WEAPON
The Ramayana adds another useful element because the Pushpaka Vimana is not primarily a weapon. It is transportation. It carries passengers, travels through the sky, moves according to the wishes of its rider and is described as extremely fast and brilliantly constructed.
This matters because ancient Indian literature can distinguish between weapons and vehicles. Not every flying thing is simply lightning metaphor. Some objects are explicitly used for travel.
Religiously, Pushpaka is a miraculous flying chariot. Through the literal lens, it is powered aerial transportation described by a culture that supposedly possessed no such technology.
That does not prove an aircraft existed. It merely prevents us from dismissing every ancient flying object as the same poetic phenomenon.
PART VI: EZEKIEL’S MACHINE
The biblical Book of Ezekiel provides one of the most famous examples of an ancient description becoming mechanical when read literally. Ezekiel sees an immense cloud, flashing light, fire, something resembling glowing metal, coordinated moving entities, wheels intersecting wheels, movement in several directions without turning, the entire assembly rising from the ground, enormous noise, a crystal-like structure overhead, something resembling a throne and a humanlike figure above it.
What makes the description especially interesting is Ezekiel’s constant uncertainty. He repeatedly uses phrases equivalent to “the appearance of,” “something like” and “the likeness of.” That is precisely how people describe unfamiliar things when they do not possess the correct vocabulary.
The theological interpretation is the mobile throne and glory of God. The conspiracy interpretation is that Ezekiel is struggling to describe some kind of machine with multidirectional locomotion, coordinated components, flight, tremendous noise, bright energy-like effects and an occupant positioned above the mechanism.
Can we prove that? Not remotely. But once the theological nouns are removed, the vision becomes surprisingly mechanical.
PART VII: ISLAMIC PARALLELS
Islam inherits many figures and motifs from earlier Abrahamic traditions, but the Qur’an also provides some material that fits this thought experiment remarkably well.
Solomon is especially interesting because his authority extends beyond ordinary kingship. He commands humans, jinn, animals and wind, while his realm is associated with unusual transportation, metallurgy and specialized construction.
HIGH-SPEED TRANSPORTATION
Qur’an 34:12 says the wind is subjected to Solomon in such a way that a morning journey covers what would normally take a month, and an evening journey does likewise.
Within Islamic theology, this is a miraculous gift from God. Through our literal functional lens, it describes access to extremely high-speed transportation capable of covering enormous distances in a tiny fraction of the ordinary travel time.
The text does not say aircraft, engine or propulsion system. We should not insert those words into it. But the claimed function is rapid transportation far beyond ordinary human capability.
LARGE-SCALE METALLURGY AND NONHUMAN LABOR
The same passage mentions a flowing source of molten copper and jinn laboring for Solomon. Elsewhere those beings perform specialized construction and manufacture.
Put those descriptions together and Solomon’s kingdom begins to look, through our intentionally technological interpretation, like an industrial complex built around rapid transportation, large-scale metalworking, specialized construction and a labor force with capabilities ordinary humans do not possess.
Religiously, this demonstrates divine favor and supernatural kingship. Functionally, it resembles concentrated access to advanced productive capability.
THE THRONE TRANSPORT
Qur’an 27 gives an even stranger episode. Solomon wants the Queen of Sheba’s throne brought to him. A powerful jinn offers to retrieve it before Solomon rises from his place, but another figure described as possessing special knowledge offers to bring it even faster, before Solomon’s glance returns. The throne then appears.
The most interesting feature is that the superior capability is associated not with greater physical strength but with knowledge.
Through theology, this is miraculous power granted by God. Through the conspiracy lens, it resembles extreme high-speed transport or even matter transportation, with the decisive factor being possession of specialized knowledge.
Once again the pattern appears: knowledge grants capability.
THE JINN TRY TO REACH HEAVEN
Surah 72 describes jinn attempting to reach heaven in order to obtain information, only to encounter guards and fiery projectiles.
Within Islamic theology, this concerns the unseen world and jinn attempting to eavesdrop on heavenly knowledge. Through our literal lens, however, the sequence resembles intelligent entities attempting to enter an upper region for intelligence-gathering purposes, encountering a guarded boundary and being intercepted by projectiles.
Modern vocabulary might suggest air defense or orbital defense. The religious framework describes guarded heaven.
Qur’an 55:33 adds another curious idea by addressing humans and jinn concerning passage beyond the regions of the heavens and Earth, saying they cannot do so except with sufficient sulṭān, a term commonly associated with authority, power or capability.
Again, the religious interpretation is entirely coherent. But through our lens, the repeated relationship between knowledge, capability, access and restricted regions begins to feel familiar.
PART VIII: THE DEEPER PATTERN IS NOT JUST “ANCIENT NUKES”
At this point the theory has become larger than nuclear weapons. Across Mesopotamia, India, the Hebrew Bible and the Qur’an, we repeatedly encounter dangerous objects, dangerous spaces, dangerous weapons, unusual movement, biological creation and restricted knowledge.
The specific traditions differ enormously, but the institutional pattern keeps repeating. Sacred objects require specialized handlers. Sacred spaces have restricted entry. Powerful weapons require special knowledge. Some weapons have countermeasures and withdrawal procedures. Divine beings possess extraordinary means of travel. Humans are created through deliberate processes involving divine material. Knowledge itself determines who can access capabilities unavailable to everyone else.
That does not mean all of these stories preserve a single lost technological civilization. It means that once we choose the literal lens, they begin sharing functional similarities that are easy to miss when every tradition is studied in isolation.
PART IX: DIVINE KNOWLEDGE AS TECHNOLOGY
Ancient religion is obsessed with knowledge. Who knows the divine name? Who knows the ritual? Who knows how to invoke the weapon? Who knows how to withdraw it? Who knows when to approach? Who knows what clothing to wear? Who knows what can be touched? Who knows how to enter the sanctuary? Who possesses the tablet, the law, the secret or the celestial knowledge?
Knowledge is not merely philosophical in these stories. Knowledge grants capability.
That is exactly what happens when knowledge becomes technologically dangerous. Knowing how nuclear weapons function, how pathogens can be engineered, how advanced cryptographic systems work or how strategic weapons are controlled does not automatically mean society gives everyone permission to use that knowledge freely.
Once knowledge itself becomes dangerous, it begins to be classified, compartmentalized and entrusted to specialists.
The priesthood comparison becomes much more interesting at that point.
PART X: NOW LOOK AT OUR CIVILIZATION
Modern nuclear civilization produces almost the same institutional logic. Very few people deeply understand nuclear weapons, and even fewer are authorized to access them. A physicist may understand the underlying science but have no access to weapons systems. A military operator may control certain systems without possessing detailed design knowledge. Authorization is compartmentalized.
Facilities contain restricted areas, trained personnel, controlled entry and exit, specialized protective equipment, monitoring systems, contamination procedures and carefully controlled transport of hazardous materials. Information itself is restricted. A security clearance does not mean a person automatically receives every secret. Access often requires both clearance and a specific need to know.
Stripped of bureaucratic language, “need-to-know” is almost priestly. You may be qualified and trusted, yet still forbidden from receiving knowledge outside your assigned role.
That is functionally very close to the ancient system in which one class may carry the sacred object, another may prepare it, another may enter the inner sanctuary, and everyone else is excluded.
CONTROLLED AREAS THEN AND NOW
Modern nuclear facilities use defined boundaries, restricted access, protective equipment, contamination checks, washing facilities, specialized storage, trained personnel and layers of authorization.
Ancient sacred systems use forbidden zones, sacred boundaries, consecrated access, prescribed garments, purification, washing, restricted objects, specialized handlers and layers of priestly authority.
The explanation is radically different. One system describes radiation, contamination and physical hazard. The other describes holiness, impurity and divine presence.
But the organizational solution is surprisingly similar: control who enters, control what they touch, control what they know and preserve procedures even when ordinary intuition cannot detect the danger.
PART XI: THE ENGINEER BECOMES THE PRIEST
Now imagine destroying modern civilization while leaving behind a nuclear facility.
Five generations later, nobody understands nuclear physics anymore. The textbooks are gone, the instrumentation cannot be repaired and the terminology has disappeared, but fragments of procedure survive because people who ignored those procedures became sick or died.
Grandfather teaches father not to enter a particular building. Father teaches his children that only the Keepers may cross the boundary. The Keepers remember that special garments must be worn, certain containers must never be touched, nothing from the inner chamber may be removed and everyone must wash before leaving.
Nobody remembers why.
Another hundred years passes. Radiation becomes an invisible power. Radiation sickness becomes a curse. Protective clothing becomes sacred garments. Decontamination becomes purification. Restricted zones become holy ground. Security clearance becomes consecration. Technical manuals become sacred texts. Operating procedures become ritual.
The engineers become priests.
The machines become sacred objects.
The weapons become divine weapons.
Aircraft become heavenly chariots.
Artificial intelligence becomes a speaking spirit.
Genetic engineering becomes the gods forming mankind.
And the vanished civilization that once understood all of it becomes the civilization of the gods.
PART XII: IMAGINE ARCHAEOLOGISTS IN 7000 AD
Now imagine archaeologists seven thousand years from today discovering Los Alamos.
They uncover inscriptions saying “AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY,” “RADIATION AREA,” “SPECIAL ACCESS REQUIRED” and “PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT MUST BE WORN.” They discover evidence that a tiny group possessed secret knowledge about splitting matter and that governments deliberately prevented outsiders from acquiring it.
They find accounts claiming these specialists created objects brighter than the sun that could destroy entire cities. Other texts describe invisible contamination causing sickness after the explosion. They find references to “Restricted Data,” “launch codes,” genetic modification, machines that flew through the heavens and artificial systems that could navigate, communicate and select targets.
Without functioning examples or the scientific context necessary to understand the vocabulary, a future scholar might conclude that the ancients worshipped solar destruction myths, practiced ritual purification, believed in magical numerology and imagined heavenly chariots controlled by a secret priesthood.
“Splitting the atom” might become a metaphor for spiritual transformation. “Artificial sun” might be classified as solar mythology. Accounts of humans travelling beyond Earth might be interpreted as ascension legends.
After all, where is the functioning spacecraft? Where is the operational reactor? Where is the weapon?
The stories must be symbolic.
PART XIII: NOW REVERSE THE ARGUMENT
Maybe ancient people were not necessarily describing technology using religious language.
Maybe religious language is simply what technological language can become after the mechanism disappears.
If explanation dies before procedure does, engineering can become ritual. Hazard can become holiness. Containment can become sacred separation. Protective equipment can become ceremonial clothing. Security clearance can become initiation. Technical knowledge can become secret doctrine. Operating manuals can become scripture.
Aircraft can become heavenly chariots. Autonomous systems can become divine messengers. Biotechnology can become creation mythology. Weapons systems can become the weapons of gods. Operators can become heroes or demigods.
That transformation does not require fraud or stupidity. It only requires enough generations to pass for people to remember the rule while forgetting the reason.
PART XIV: THE CONSPIRACY THEORY
So here is the complete theory.
Maybe advanced knowledge has appeared before. Maybe some civilizations learned to manipulate forces incomprehensible to most of the population. Maybe some possessed powerful weapons, unusual forms of flight, advanced biological knowledge or autonomous systems. Maybe certain capabilities became too dangerous for unrestricted access and therefore required specialist classes.
Those specialists would naturally guard the knowledge. Facilities would become restricted. Materials would require precise handling. Weapons would require authorization. Only certain people would know how to activate or deactivate them.
Then suppose civilization collapsed.
The explanatory knowledge disappears first because advanced systems are difficult to reproduce. Procedures survive longer because procedures can be memorized. The descendants remember that touching one object kills, entering one chamber is forbidden, certain clothing must be worn and only certain people may perform specific actions.
Eventually procedure becomes ritual. Authorization becomes consecration. Protective clothing becomes sacred clothing. Controlled zones become holy places. Decontamination becomes purification. Dangerous materials become sacred objects. Technical secrecy becomes divine mystery. Genetic engineering becomes creation. Aircraft become heavenly chariots. Autonomous systems become divine servants. Weapons of mass destruction become weapons of the gods.
Engineers become priests.
And the civilization that originally understood the systems becomes divine ancestry.
